ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Georgia Public Service Commission unanimously approved SCANA Energy as the state's regulated provider for another two-year term.

A release from the Georgia Public Service Commission says that the Georgia legislature created the regulated provider program in 2002, which lets low-income and credit-challenged customers get service at lower rates.

The regulated provider only offers services in areas that the Atlanta Gas Light Company distribution area serves.

SCANA has been Georgia's regulated provider since 2002. It's new contract will start on September 1, 2018 and end on August 31, 2020.

“The regulated provider enables thousands of low-income Georgians to enjoy natural gas service at reasonable prices or to obtain service they otherwise could not obtain,” said Commission Chairman Lauren “Bubba” McDonald.
