US Bank Smith's (Kroger) Rewards World Mastercard

Figure this card might be deserving of it's own thread. I think it is brand new. Smith's is one of Kroger's brand names. I'm thinking about signing up. In stores they're handing out flyers that say: "Get $100 in free groceries + 55¢ per gallon of fuel for a year each time you redeem at least 100 fuel points."

Some of the fine print:
Apply by 5/21/19
Discount is available at Kroger Family of Companies Fuel Centers each time you redeem at least 100 existing fuel points earned in a single month. You must pay with your rewards world MasterCard to receive the fuel discount
I can't find any spend requirement, I think you earn it on approval.
It's a US Bank card.

Here's the online signup but I see they're only offering $.25 off per gallon and no free groceries
https://www.smithsmastercard.com/cre...t&lang=en&exp=

So anyone signup yet?

My family purchased about 1,700 gallons of fuel last year, so x.55 = $935, plus the $100 free groceries, I am thinking about signing up for this card, basically a $1k signup bonus for our situation, but as always YMMV.

Do you always fill up at participating gas stations? We don't have Smith's here, but I get Safeway fuel points. The local Chevron/Texaco stations tend to be significantly more expensive than some other equally convenient stations, so I usually only use it on road trips or if I accumulate enough to make up for more than the price difference.

Historically, the Smiths/Kroger affiliated stations are within about 10 cents of the lowest street price/Costco (sometimes they are equal to the lowest street price/Costco). They are never "too far off" like Chevron/Texaco/Safeway is. Also the Smiths/Kroger affiliated stations are same price for gas cash or credit again unlike most of Safeway's regions on the west coast.

Yes were I live we hardly ever leave the valley, and Smith's (Kroger) is always the cheapest, or at least tie for cheapest.

Yes, this is tied to the no Visa credit plan at Smith's. 55 cents seems to be the highest promo I've seen including comparing US Bank mailers for this cobrand. As mentioned, Kroger fuel should price at or near the lowest for a given market.

You can apply from any Kroger region, but would need the special flyer.

Review the language on the flyer to verify if it is open only to residents of certain states...

Since this card does not have Contactless, I have no interest in it. Despite being a frequent customer of Smiths.

no 100 dollars for me

when i signed up they never said anything about spending 200 dollars the first 40 days any place on the information in order to get the 100 dollar free food. so now its been over a month and a half and now i find out i was suppose to spend 200 dollars to get the 100 in food and so now i cant get it. wow just wow.. and to get the 55 cents off a gallon of fuel you had to sign up by a certain date and use the promo code on the flyer that was on the gas pump at kroger or smiths. lots of hoops to jump and then you only get one percent back on things bought at kroger or smiths only so i will just stick with my fidelity credit card that pays me two percent on everything. this card is a rip off.

Welcome to Flyertalk. How close were you to the $200 threshold?

i called us bank for the third time this time they transferred me to kroger they said i have 200 dollars on my card because i now have two credit cards. i signed up for a second card because they said i could not get the credit or fuel discount on the first card because i did not use the promo code but i guess they were wrong. but when i bought some meds the other day i had to pay for them so i have no idea how to use the 200 dollars it does not show on my bank card or on my kroger smith card. but kroger said it does show on my card. so next time i get charged for something at smiths i will have to ask them how i ever use that money. as far as spending 200 to get the 100 that must be after the promo date. i have only spent 24 dollars on food and that was three weeks after i got the card so maybe i had to wait longer to get the food credit and maybe it does not work for med. the person at kroger said it did but they are probably wrong because i bought meds just a couple of days age and i had to pay for them. nobody really knows anything. life is a crap shoot.

So I’m really contemplating getting this card for the additional 55 cents off but I don’t understand how it works. I get that you’re eligible for $0.55 off per gallon after you redeem at least 100 fuel points, but does it stack when you redeem for the max (1000 fuel points for $1 off per gallon)? If it does, this card will definitely be worth it for me as I’m looking at over $1k savings in the first year (35 gallons per week x $0.55 per gallon x 52 weeks= $1001 [also there’s a $50 bonus if you meet the min spending bringing the total to $1051]). Or are we capped at $1 off? Which would make this a total waste of my time. Any ideas?

The website indicates it is only for the first year and as you indicated only when you redeem at least 10 cents in each visit. The way I read it, it would likely be done as a backend (discount off the charge on your card statement). This means it would stack on top of the $1 off if you did indeed redeem that much.

This is a bit difficult because you also cannot stretch accumulated rewards into separate fuel trips (if you had 20 cents to redeem, you can't break it into two transactions of 10 cents to get the 55 cents twice). So, they make it a little tricky to use if you have multiple vehicles.

Speaking of this, I found this photo I had taken at a Ralphs location back in November indicating that contactless is actually a thing on at least some of Kroger's cards now:

Of course, most of Kroger's stores/gas stations themselves still don't accept it, so it's not exactly going to be useful for gas purchases like what OP and others in this thread are discussing.

Thanks Rasheed!

Can you elaborate on your 2nd point? Why wouldn’t I be able to split 200 fuel points into 2 separate transaction to earn $0.55 off/gallon? I usually do 2k points every trip in 2 transactions (35 gallons/transaction) back to back. Are we limited to getting the $0.55 off to once per month because I’m not getting that from their language?

At some Kroger, there is only one prompt at the pump to use whatever rewards you have at one time (20 cents for 200 in the example). There may be other Kroger brands that let you pick how much reward you use at the pump (10 cents or 20 cents). I have primarily seen the first kind where you cannot down-select how many points to use in a given transaction.
