In-room Wifi? Honors or ATTwifi?

Been staying in several Hilton properties in southern California since October.

At check-in, each hotel always says "As a Diamond, you're entitled to free internet access. Here is the password to the network 'ATTwifi.'" and then they write the password on the card pamphlet.

Every hotel then has wifi networks named "HHonors" and "ATTwifi".

What's the point of the two networks? Why does the front desk never mention "HHonors"?

I was having trouble gaining internet access earlier this evening and front desk said to only use ATTwifi. I said I was, and asked if I should try HHonors. The front desk said "No. ATTwifi is open and does not require you to enter a password."

I'm now surfing using HHonors because ATTwifi can't access the internet.

I use whichever is stronger. Log in process is the same.

For my iPhone, I use ATT since no messing around with login.

I've always been confused by this as well....but have always used "HHonors". At my last stay, the desk clerk specifically stated that to access wifi to go through "ATTwifi", so that's what I did. This was an ES property, I believe. I am not sure what the difference is, except for HHonors you use your membership number and PIN and for ATTwifi you use a code they give you at the desk....at least to the best of my recollection that is how it works.

With either ATT or HHonors, I always simply get the usual login page and put in my Diamond #

I've often wondered about this and on occasion found one to work when the other doesn't, but in general they seem to be the same network. Perhaps something mandated by Hilton Corporate? After all, we all know how tech and IT savvy Hilton Corporate is!!!

Neither will actually be stronger - they are both serviced by the same access points, which will be configured with both networks. That's not to say your computer might not show one as being stronger, but those strength meters are never all that accurate.

As far as why they have two, your iPhone point pretty much hits the mark. Having "attwifi" means that AT&T cell phones can transparently connect to and use that network, something they aren't going to do to "hhonors". At the same time, having "hhonors" gives Hilton the branding they want.

docbert is correct. attwifi exists so the at&t iPhones can get free access (in most locations).
