It might sound rather cliché, but consistency is the one thing Manchester United want at the moment.

While their trait of playing poorly, going behind but eventually winning might be somewhat predictable as of late, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows something drastically needs to change if his side are to make the most of a Premier League season which is there for the taking.

United's mixed start to the season has largely been labelled as a crisis by those away from the club, but after ten matches played they are now fourth in the table, just three points behind early leaders Chelsea.

The shape of the English top-flight will likely change again once Tottenham and Liverpool have played on Sunday, but for the first time this season the top-half of the table is showing some signs of the normality most had assumed.

A good run of form now could define the entire season for any title hopefuls, with United well aware that a strong winter could see them flourish in the spring.

It is for that obvious reason that 'consistency' remains a buzzword at Old Trafford, but in order to achieve it Solskjaer needs to start showing some with his own selections on the pitch.

A bumper squad with plenty of rotation options gives United a huge advantage over most in the Premier League this season, but even with such luxury it is startling to see how over reliant they remain on the talents of Bruno Fernandes.

His introduction helped change the game at the London Stadium, but just as he is reliable, so too is teenage striker Mason Greenwood.

It will be Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba and Fernandes who grab the headlines for an impressive comeback against the Hammers; but Greenwood is perhaps the one who sent the biggest statement with a sumptuous goal to give United the lead.

His moment of brilliance to set-up the goal was simply world-class and it speaks volumes of Greenwood's talent that such a strike wasn't given quite the level of acclaim which it deserved.

Still only 19 it is remarkable to think just how far he has come since bursting onto the scene little over a year ago with Patrice Evra labelling him the best finisher at the club over the weekend.

Both he and Gary Neville drew the inevitable comparisons with Robin van Persie, perhaps the one area where consistency isn't an issue for United.

However, the extraordinary goal from Greenwood also highlighted somewhat of a dilemma, with the teenager still down in the pecking order when it comes to playing as a central attacking option.

The Bradford-born sensation has played the majority of his matches for United on the right wing, something which is proving to be both a blessing and a curse.

The sheer amount of game time out wide has accelerated the development of Greenwood to that of senior squad status, but it seems to have also slightly hindered his irresistible touch in front of goal.

If the youngster really is to emulate, and possibly even succeed, the career of Van Persie then he needs to be playing frequently through the middle, something Solskjaer needs to help him with.

Edinson Cavani offers something different up front to Greenwood so should not hamper his development at all, but after a rocky start to the season there is no excuse to start Anthony Martial ahead of Greenwood anymore.

The only concern is who fills in for him at right wing, despite the decent recent form of Rashford as a wide man. Juan Mata is technically excellent if not limited by his lack of pace, Daniel James remains better on the left and youngster Facundo Pellistri still remains one for the future rather than the present.

Instead, the key to using Greenwood as a central attacking option might rely on the impact of summer signing Amad Diallo with United hopeful the Atalanta teenager will secure a work permit and be free to join them next month.

Even in such a case Diallo, 18, will need to be eased into life at Old Trafford, but the need for a right winger is apparent given the recent success of Greenwood through the middle.

The English teenager is a generational talent who could define an era both for club and country as a centre-forward, but now it is down to Solskjaer to ensure he has the perfect platform to do so. Signing a short-term right winger next month might have to be considered.
