How to Get the Most Out of Walmart Gift Registries

When deciding where to register for your wedding, baby or life event, you may have overlooked Walmart. But, thanks to its ease of use and flexible options, Walmart’s gift registry program is worth considering. Here’s how to set up your Walmart registry — and some perks to be aware of.

How to create a Walmart registry

Registering with Walmart is easy:

• Go to Walmart.com and select the type of registry you want: Baby, wedding,events (which you can use for other occasions, such as housewarmings) and Registry for Good (if your 501c3 charitable organization needs supplies).
• Sign in to your Walmart.com account or follow the instructions to create one.
• Fill in the required fields for your registry, such as the type of event and the date of the event.
• To add items to your registry, search Walmart’s site as usual. But instead of selecting “Add to cart,” select “Add to registry.” Items will automatically be listed in your registry.

Your registry will be active for two years after the event date.

Why register at Walmart?

Here are some of the perks that come with creating a Walmart registry:

• A huge selection of items: Walmart sells practically everything, so you’re not limited to flatware, china, bedding, receiving blankets, bottles and other mainstream wedding and baby registry options. Want to register for board games? An electric toothbrush? Car tires? Walmart doesn’t judge. Add those things to your registry. Walmart’s big selection is also useful for those with non-traditional registries. If a loved one is caring for a sick spouse, for example, you might set up a registry on their behalf filled with snacks and other essentials to see them through a difficult time. • Custom registry event types: In addition to the more traditional registries (Walmart baby registry and Walmart wedding registry), you can create a registry for any type of life event. Want to share a birthday wish list? Register for items for your new home? Create a registry for someone who has experienced a recent tragedy or illness? Create a Walmart event registry and call it whatever you want.

• Registry access in the Walmart app: Not only can you access and adjust your registry from your phone, but you can use the app to scan items for your registry while in a Walmart store. Being able to scan items into your registry with your phone is a useful feature because you don’t need to visit Guest Services and ask for a registry scanner. Simply scan in items with your own phone while you’re making a Walmart run for groceries. Even if you assume you’ll add all your registry items online, it can help to see the towels or baby crib in person. Scanning items with your phone lets you do that with minimal hassle. It’s important to note that only wedding and baby registries are available on the Walmart app at this time.

• The ability to see what others have registered for: Don’t know where to start? Walmart’s wedding registry has a “Meet our most-registered items” feature. Explore it to see which pressure cookers are most popular and which kinds of dishes and flatware other engaged couples want. This can help you narrow down your many options.

• Free shipping: Loved ones who buy you gifts will get free shipping on eligible items if their order is more than $35. That’s a relatively low threshold and ensures most of your guests’ generosity won’t saddle them with shipping charges.

• Free returns: You can easily return items that aren’t what you expected within 90 days of the purchase date. You can even start returns via the Walmart app and drop your items off at a Walmart store in the Mobile Express Line to avoid lines.
