What’s It About?

BUZZMATH is a website that gives kids the chance to practice middle school math skills online. Upon account sign-in, kids are briefed with a motivational narrative and challenged to save Buzz City from math ignorance. Four books titled by grade and standard lead to a list of topics and core-aligned, interactive, quiz-like lessons. Content is well organized by standards, grade, and topics such as Patterns and Tables, Fractions, and Equations and Inequalities. Kids select any grade or topic, get to retry questions with new data, and track progress with stars and a personal home page. Kids also retry questions to earn stars on sets of 10 interactive questions.

Buzzmath wraps solid, easy-to-navigate content in a dynamic package. Relatively standard, dry content is jazzed up by concise, just-in-time explanations, varied question types, calculator and drawing tools, and interactive controls including arrows that move along number lines and dynamic graphing.

A video briefing explains the unfortunate fate of Buzz City: a nefarious presence erased the mathematical knowledge base except for Prof. Bowtie. Kids can choose from 28 diverse creatures and characters to unlock and complete missions (read: improve math knowledge) to restore the city to its previous grandeur. Although these motivational strategies are slightly contrived and not really integrated to the content, they're still fun. The price is a bit of an investment, but Buzzmath is worth it.
