The following personal information will be required when you register: email, password, date of birth, gender and location.

The BCC stresses this information will be used responsibly, saying: “The BBC is a public service.

“Everything we do has to benefit you, our audience.

“And that includes what we do with your personal information.”

Do you need to sign in to watch BBC iPlayer?

BBC will soon require you to use your BBC account to use BBC iPlayer on your TV.

Without signing in, you will be unable to play programmes or benefit from the personalised features that BBC iPlayer offers.

The BBC’s site explains the need to do so: “We need to understand more on what people are watching to ensure we are providing something for everyone.

“Up until now we could only tell how many people used BBC iPlayer, but having more data like age, gender and location will ensure we’re better serving all our audience."

You will not have to sign in every time you visit the site as you should stay signed in for two years on each web browser or app.
