How to access example.com

Hi.

I'm a total n00b at computers and the internet in gereal. I've always been, and that's why my sister created my email for me when I was younger. It was no problem back then, I was able to log into msn, which was the whole point in having an email. The email is hosted by (is that even the right term?) example.com

In my older years, I've created a new email adress, but it's connected to my old one. Because of todays password-saving in browsers and apps I've forgotten my password, have no idea what the answer to my security question is and the only way to reset the password via my old email. The email is *****@example.com, and not example.com as in for example, but literally, .example.com.

I have, after weeeeks of struggelig managed to log onto the email via outlook. I've tested sending emails, which works, but it just will not receive emails. I've tried setting it up on my iPhone which wont work. Won't work setting it up via the mail program on my mac either.

Is there any way for me to receive emails on this e-mail? I really need some of the stings stored in my other email, including som emails from a friend who passed away and stuff, so I'm not ready to give up.

Who did you "try" to create that email with? I say try, because example.com is NOT a valid domain. It would be like saying your phone number is 555-123-4567. It has no Mx records and has belonged to IANA (they control some of the internet) for as long as I know. See here and here for confirmation.

My guess is someone sent you instructions to use your email, and used the domain "example.com" as a example and you misunderstood. 

When you send someone email, what is the outbound email the person sees the email coming from and what the SMTP server is? For instructions, please reply what email program you prefer. Last, what was your domain before?

My sister created the email a long time ago, I have no idea where she created it, but I'm guessing at the "register" front page on hotmail.com, because that's where most of us created our emails back then.

No, haha I'm serious, it was not an instruction or an example, the email I was given was ******@example.com. I used it everyday to log into msn and talk to people.

I tried sending my girfriend an email, and she received it. From the email I'm talking about, *******@example.com. BUT when she tries to answer, she gets an email saying: "Delivery has failed (..) your message was rejected by the recipient email server. Please check the recipient email adress and try resending your message, or contact the recipient directly. For more tips to help resolve this issue, see DSN code 5.1.0 in Exchange Online - Office 365. If the problem continues, contact your email admin"

How and where can I check what the SMTP server is?

I'm just using outlook.com, that's the only place I could log in. I kept getting pop-up messages from outlook when I signed in that I needed to verify my email adress to be able to access my inbox. In order to do so, I linked the example.com mail to another email i created just to verify. That worked well, and made me get access to inbox and other features on outlook.com. Still can't receive emails though, which maybe isn't all that wierd, considering example.com is not a valid domain.

Outlook.com? Not Outlook the program? If so, what email address do you use to sign in with? Same user@example.com?

My best guess is you had a custom domain with Microsoft, that ended in 2014, but wan grandfathered in until the Hotmail>Microsoft shift. Now they cost money with Outlook premium. I don't know HOW Outlook allowed a invalid domain, but I guess it is possible. 

PS. I am seriously hating Microsoft right now for how they are handling this transition. Complete FUBAR.

To log in I type the example.com email and password which takes me to my empty inbox.. I had a couple of messages in the trashcan which I could open, but they contained no messages. I couldn't see the sender either, so I have no idea what that was..

I have no clue what I had, regarding the custom domain you are suggesting. I just got this email and log into it with no problems what so ever. I used it for years on msn, as I said earlier.

Do you know if there is a way to make emails, ment for the example.com mail, to be automatically forwarded to another email? Or will the sender still get the email in return with the error code?

No. AFAIK there is no way to make it work. No one has control over the domain. Example.com is not a function-able email domain. It would be like trying to control email going to user@4. It just won't work.

My best guess before was you used it as a personal domain. Kind of like how you use a email address to log into facebook, you used that fake email address to log into hotmail. Then that outbound email had a fixed reply-to address, which worked because Hotmail(and ONLY hotmail) would know where to send the email, since it was their personal domain. However now Hotmail was bought my Microsoft and don't offer that as a option anymore. My best suggestion would be to create a new email address. 

PS: can you ask your sister if she remembers what she did? I am legitimately curious how you got this to work before.

I'm beginning to understand how this example.com and domain thing is working, so I get what you're saying. Just wish I hadn't used the example.com mail to be the back-up mail for when I need a password reset. It's not easy reseting a password by getting an email to an adress that can't receive emails xD I've sent an email to outlook, hoping they will help me, but no answers so far..

Yea, I'm sorry I wasn't able to think of a solution, but if it makes you feel any better, I think a lot of people are in the same boat. I am surprised more people haven't commented on this thread to agree how strange it is. I still don't see how it could have even worked outside MSN.com mail network. 

AFAIK means As Far As I Know. FUBAR means Fowled Up Beyond All Repair.
