Carrier Of The Year Awarded By Transplace At Annual Symposium In Dallas

Transplace, a leading provider of transportation management services and logistics technology solutions, recently announced the winners of four key performance awards within their carrier merit program. Convening Tuesday in Dallas, carriers of all service profiles came together at the annual Carrier Symposium to discuss industry issues such as the impact of trade and transportation on inland ports and logistics parks, the effect of sustainability on fleets, and collaborative shipper / carrier continuous improvement opportunities.

The Carrier Symposium is a gathering of key Transplace carriers held each spring offering educational sessions and forward-thinking speakers on current market conditions, changes within the industry and future planning. At the event, Kyle Alexander, general manager of strategic development for the company and Carrier Symposium host, awarded four select carriers for their service performance under the 2008 Transplace Carrier Merit Program.

"The Carrier Merit program supports the goal of Transplace to find growth opportunities for our carriers while also providing outstanding service for our customers. The competition for our performance awards was very close this year, especially around the customer service and e-business categories," said Alexander. "With the high level of focus on service and overall strength of competition in the program, we had several carriers within a handful of points from each other. But there were carriers that clearly demonstrated qualitative attributes above and beyond their peers, which helped Transplace make the final decision for each category."

At the Carrier Symposium, Transplace awarded the following awards to these winning carriers:

  • Transplace Carrier of the Year Award, Con-way Truckload
  • Best On-Time Service Award, Heartland Express
  • Best e-Business Carrier, USA Truck
  • Best Customer Service Performance, Southern Freight

Martin Tewari, vice president of sales for Con-way Truckload and the 2008 Transplace Truckload Carrier of the Year Award winner stated: "I am extremely pleased with being awarded the Transplace Carrier of the Year Award. It is not only a symbol of the accomplishments of Con-way and the strength of our relationship with Transplace, but it also represents the growth we've experienced since being selected as an alliance carrier. Transplace has been able to sustain us with ongoing growth and opportunity, even in a down market."

The Transplace Carrier Merit Program categorizes carriers into tiers based on strict and demanding performance factors. The company has established two primary tiers of alliance carriers and a developmental progression plan for key carriers targeting business needs and upward movement through the merit program.

"The value carriers receive from participating in this program includes access to approximately billions in annual purchased transportation, opportunities for optimizing a carriers' network efficiency and promptly paid invoices," said Alexander. "

The awards are data-centric and based on companywide, quantitative data for each award selection. To be eligible for the Transplace truckload Carrier of the Year Award, a carrier must have met the following requirements:

  • Hauled at least 1,500 loads for Transplace
  • Provided freight services across five or more Transplace accounts
  • Maintained an on-time pick-up and delivery of 95 percent or better
  • Contracted as a truckload carrier
  • Actively participated as an EPA SmartWay Carrier
  • Maintained an excellent customer service relationships across all accounts
  • Utilized EDI capabilities extensively, and
  • Provided regular feedback and communication to all levels of management

For the carriers that scored highest, a survey was distributed to Transplace internal accounts to vote on the top six carriers that exceeded the above criteria. Con-way Truckload, the Transplace Carrier of the Year, maintained a 98.2 percent overall on-time pickup and delivery service for 2008.
