Old Tiscali(Talktalk) email account closing.

Options
I have an old tiscali (now talktalk) email account which is to be deleted by talktalk.

I have a Gmail account that has been my main email account for years so I don't mind the account closing, BUT I don't want to lose the emails in the Tiscali account.

How can I keep my emails? Is it possible to transfer the email account elsewhere? I've googled this and tried to move the email to Outlook but it didn't work. Don't really understand what IMAP and POP3 are.

Can anyone help please?
Thank you in advance, all replies much appreciated.

Set up your Gmail account to show the Tiscali emails all in your Gmail.  You should then be able to drag what you want to keep over to a Gmail folder.

    Thank you!
How do I know if Tiscali is Pop3 or IMAP?
Would the server still be tiscali.co.uk, even though its talktalk now?

Please read what I wrote again.  You don't add any server settings.  Go into Gmail -> Accounts and Import -> Import mail and contacts.  Click the link.  Give it your Tiscali details and your password.  It should then sort itself out.

Thank you, I've done that now but I'm stuck at step 1 signing into my tiscali account. I'm getting an error message 'Could not validate this combination of email address and password'.
I know I am using the correct password, (as I've checked by signing in).
Thank you again for your help and patience , I really appreciate it.

You may need to log into your Tiscali webmail direct and see if there is an option for external mail access or similar.  Or the new trend is app passwords.  You may need to set one of those up in your Tiscali email to allow Gmail to see it.

I've logged into my Tiscali webmail direct but can't find any option for external mail.
Tiscali have already "limited my email account so that I am unable to send or receive emails desktop or mobile email management and will only be able to do so by visiting www.talktalk.co.uk/mail"
,, ,      Could it be that Tiscali have limted external email access too?
They don't have an email app.

Well it was reported two years ago that Tiscali email was going bye bye unless it was associated with active TalkTalk accounts, but not entirely clear whether it went ahead or not.

Tiscali does not exist on its own, it hasn't done since it was merged with TalkTalk in 2009.  Any "issues" with it are TalkTalk's domain, but most providers insist on closing down legacy providers after a while, especially if you aren't with them any longer.

If you can't get access via Gmail the next best thing is just to set up an email client like Thunderbird or Outlook temporarily, then you you can add your Gmail to that and drag across any emails you want:

Strangely, I have a onetel email address that still works. I left them about 15 (?) years ago!
Occasionally get emails from Sainsburys as well as Talk Talk (who I think took them over)

Onetel  (the UK arm) was bought by the Carphone Warehouse in 2006 from Centrica and became part of TalkTalk.  Its original Australian company/arm collapsed in a major corporate/financial scandal in 2001 but wasn't fully wound up until relatively recently.

Talktalk hoovered up various other companies over the years (including the UK Arm of AOL) and later demerged from the Carphone Warehouse.
