JEFFERSONVILLE — Southern Indiana residents will have one more place to go to open up RiverLink accounts starting this week, as the start of tolling approaches.

A satellite of Quartermaster Court's RiverLink Customer Service Center opens today at the Jeffersonville License Branch of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, 2944 E. 10th St. The additional site is expected to stay open until sometime in the spring.

One to three RiverLink customer service representatives will be available at the BMV to help visitors open accounts and receive the transponders that will allow them to easily pay tolls for use of the Lincoln, Kennedy and east-end bridges. Those tolls will start sometime in December, after the tolling system finishes being tested.

“Basically, it's a way to give another site, another location to folks who want transponders, but perhaps one location is not convenient for them,” said Mindy Peterson, RiverLink spokesperson.

Customers can open accounts using cash, checks or credit and debit cards at the BMV. They can register those accounts for individuals or businesses, although its recommended that businesses register over the phone. Personal accounts allow up to four vehicles and require a $20 minimum balance. Commercial accounts must have a minimum of five vehicles in addition to the $20 balance.

Personal accounts can also be opened online at RiverLink.com or by calling 855-RIV-LINK. Commercial accounts can't be opened online.

Tolling rates will range from $2 to $12, depending on the vehicle type and toll collecting method. Customers with accounts will be able to pay the tolls with a RiverLink transponder, a RiverLink E-ZPass transponder or a license plate capture.

Customers who opt for the free local RiverLink transponder, which acts like sticker and attaches to a vehicle's windshield, will only have to pay $1 per single trip across the bridge, but only if they make 40 or more trips in a calendar month.

E-ZPass Transponders are $15, can be transferred amongst vehicles and apply to E-ZPass toll roads in 16 states.

Over 70,000 transponders have been distributed or ordered as of last Friday, Peterson said.

Those without toll accounts will still be charged for using the bridges. Their bills will arrive in the mail.

Customers need to know the make, model, year, color and license plate number of their vehicle to register.

Jeffersonville's BMV is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays and 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Customers can also open accounts at three other locations: The RiverLink customer service centers at 103 Quartermaster Court, Jeffersonville; 400 E. Main St., Louisville; and the NIA center at 2900 W. Broadway in Louisville.

The customer service centers are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Customers can also purchase $20 prepaid RiverLink local transponder kits using cash at five locations: Community Action of Southern Indiana at 1613 E. Eighth St., Jeffersonville; St. Stephen Church at 2701 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville; St. Stephen Church at 1018 S. 15th Street, Louisville; TARC Union Station at 1000 W. Broadway, Louisville; and Louisville Urban League at 1535 W. Broadway.

Purchasing a kit does not require opening an account, but once the money on the transponder is exhausted, users will have to buy another one or pay higher toll rates. Customer service representatives will also not be available at the five listed locations.
