Blueprint for Common European Agricultural Data Space

The Agridataspace Coordination and Support Action has successfully concluded its 18-month activities and has delivered its recommendations for Common European Agricultural Data Space (CEADS). This milestone will be followed by a deployment action, featuring a dedicated open call for proposals under the Digital Europe Programme. The consortium recommended a decentralised approach that puts the interests of farmers at its core. It suggested constructing the data space under consideration from over 400 already existing data sharing initiatives mapped across European countries. The AgriDataSpace project was designed to establish the groundwork for a Common European Agricultural data space (CEADS). It facilitates data sharing, processing, and analysis in a secured, trusted, transparent and responsible manner. This is to boost the sector’s performance and stimulate data-driven innovations.  The project involved 15 partners, including top research institutes, agriculture data intermediaries and industry associations from 10 countries that are deeply integrated in the EU data space ecosystem. In close interaction with stakeholder groups and employing a participatory approach, the consortium mapped the current data space landscape, recording experiences with data sharing. They analysed and assessed governance and business models and evolving legislation, and defined a technical reference architecture. These elements were integrated into a roadmap that consolidates all necessary requirements and actions into a comprehensive strategy for implementing the Common European Agricultural Data Space. For further details on the coordination and support action “Agridataspace” and its achievements, have a look at the project deliverables.

Pre-commercial procurement call on civil security

The European Commission has announced a Horizon Europe call for pre-commercial procurement (PCP) on civil security. This call aims to support consortia of end-users and public procurers from several countries that want to launch together a pre-commercial procurement for acquiring the development of innovative civil security technology solutions. The indicative budget of 10,5 million € aims to fund 2 projects. The call for proposals is expected to open on 27 June and close on 20 November 2024. Background:  Pre-commercial procurement is the first step in innovation procurement, starting from relatively low technology readiness levels (TRLs). The public buyer purchases research & development services for a product or a service that is still further away from the market. PCP is divided in three phases: solution design (TRL 3-4), prototype development (TRL 5-6) and original development of a limited volume of first products/services (TRL 7-8).

#StrongerTogether: SSAH and the future of evidence-informed policymaking

This conference, organised in the context of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, aims to enhance the integration of SSAH disciplines into policymaking processes to address urgent and complex societal challenges in a more efficient and human-centric way for the benefit of scientists, policymakers, citizens and industry. The conference aims specifically to: Facilitate discussions on multidisciplinary evidence production, professionalization – notably through relevant skilling and due rewarding and career incentives - of all actors involved in evidence-informed policymaking (EIPM) ecosystems and innovation in the science-for-policy practices and organisation. Bring together 150+ participants, including international experts and practitioners, to generate recommendations for improving the EIPM ecosystem and make it more integrative of the diversity of expertise provided by SSAH disciplines. Produce a policy brief capturing the conference outcomes for wide dissemination – and further implementation - among relevant communities. Align with EU initiatives to strengthen EIPM ecosystems and contribute to current and future relevant partnerships and actions within Horizon Europe. Benefit member states involved in capacity-building efforts for evidence-informed policymaking post-pandemic, notably but not exclusively in Belgium. More information on the programme and registration is available on the conference’s webpage.

RUSTICA - Converting organic residues into bio-based fertiliser products

The RUSTICA project obtained funding under Horizon 2020, more in particular under the topic ‘Closing nutrient cycles’.  RUSTICA focuses on demonstration and implementation of circular bio-based nutrient valorisation chains, focusing on waste from the fruit and vegetable agro-food system. The project kicked off in 2021 and will run until 2024. It will use a strong multi-actor approach to co-create both socio-economic and technological knowledge in four case study regions in Europe and one in Colombia. The Flanders-based company DRANCO is one of the project partners and acts as technical project manager for the entire project. DRANCO participates in the project to develop its own technologies, to network and to help make the transition to a more circular based economy.
