Three players Arsenal could sign and five who could leave in January transfer window

ARSENAL could have a busy January transfer window and Express Sport looks at the potential comings and goings at the Emirates.

Arteta reflects on two years since becoming Arsenal boss

Arsenal spent more than any other club in Europe during the summer transfer window but that doesn’t necessarily mean January will be quiet for the Gunners. All six players that were brought in by Mikel Arteta have had a positive start to life at the Emirates.

The Gunners are fourth at Christmas and are well-placed to stage a fight towards Champions League qualification.

But Arteta may want to strengthen in a couple of key areas in order to give his side the best chance of qualifying for Europe.

And there are still several members of the squad who may be itching for a move away next month.

A number of players are out of contract at the end of the season and could also be plotting their next move.

Express Sport looks at players Arteta could target as well as those who could be on their way.

Three players Arsenal could sign

Dusan Vlahovic

Arsenal need a striker, either in January or in the summer.

Vlahovic has been on fire for Fiorentina in 2021 and rumours about a move to the Emirates refuse to go away.

At 21, he is the perfect age to slot into Arteta’s young side.

The Serbia star may not be keen on a move mid-season but Arsenal could tempt Fiorentina with a mega offer.

Renato Sanches

Former Swansea loan flop Sanches has been linked with a move to Arsenal in recent months.

The Portugal international has started to fulfil his promise at French club Lille.

Arsenal are set to lose Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny to the African Cup of Nations next month.

Sanches would fill the void those two will leave as well as be a big player for the future.

Jack Wilshere

Romantic Arsenal fans would love to see this happen.

Wilshere has been training with the club for the last two months.

Arteta said last week the 29-year-old is “100 per cent” still capable of playing in the Premier League.

He would be a short-term and cheaper alternative to Sanches.

Five players who could leave Arsenal

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Aubameyang has not featured in a match-day squad since being stripped of the captaincy.

Arteta has refused to say whether he has played his final game for the club.

But it has a familiar feeling to the final few weeks of Mesut Ozil’s time at Arsenal 12 months ago.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Aubameyang in another team’s shirt before the window shuts, with Barcelona and Juventus both linked.

Folarin Balogun

Balogun needs to play regular senior football and a loan looks likely.

He started the first Premier League game of the season due to a Covid crisis up front.

However, he hasn’t started since and has mostly been confined to under-23s football.

Spending time in the Championship could work wonders, just like it did for Emile Smith Rowe.

Eddie Nketiah

Nketiah has recently rejected a new contract, so therefore sees his future away from the Gunners.

But with Aubameyang likely to leave and Alexandre Lacazette also out of contract in the summer, he may want to reconsider that decision.

Arteta is desperate to keep the former England under-21 striker, who showcased his goalscoring potential with a hat-trick against Sunderland in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Nketiah has the power to choose his next move but Arsenal may look to cash in next month if there is no chance he will sign an extension.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Maitland-Niles wanted to leave in the summer and made that public on social media.

A meeting with Edu and Arteta convinced the academy graduate to stay put for the time being.

But he has continued to struggle for game time and a move could be on the cards.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom and a similar deal could be organised.

Pablo Mari

The performances of Ben White and Gabriel have firmly put Mari down the pecking order at the Emirates.

There have been reports the Spaniard wants to return to Brazil, two years after leaving Flamengo for the Gunners.

Arteta may want to hold onto Mari until William Saliba returns from his loan in the summer though, otherwise Arsenal could be short of options at the back if injuries occur.
