If you have set up your email account as an IMAP account, your emails are on the server, but if you delete them on your iPad, they are also delete on the server.

I know that changing your email address can be a pain but if you go to a GMail email acct this will solve a lot of the problems that occur when using cable provider email accounts. Also there is a software that will notify all your contacts that your email has changed that you can implement if you choose.

On any iOS device you can receive mails, if you did setup the account correct. If anything has changed in the account, like from POP to SMTP or if something changed in the account name, or you changed the password, you have to change the settings to.
I think the easiest way is to go to settings, email and change the part BT changed. (what you call format, could be from POP to SMTP)
Or if you have everything about the settings on paper, just delete the BT account and set up a new BT account with the new settings.
