Payment with no password login?

I have seen that worst of transgressions! PayPal processed a payment for an eBay purchase after I pressed" pay this seller only "button. I never got the next page where I always put in my paypal password so I can pick my method of payment. Instead I got a page with "your payment has processed and your item will be shipped". I have NEVER saved PayPal passwords in a browser because I want to always have to key it in in case of a lost/stolen phone or computer. I had several eBay gift cards I didn't get to use nor did I get to choose my payment method because THE PAYPAL LOGIN WAS SKIPPED! I shop on eBay ALL THE TIME and NEVER HAVE I NOT BEEN ASKED TO LOGIN TO PAYPAL WITH MY PASSWORD BEFORE MAKING A PAYMENT and then I get a summary page where I can see my total due, choose my payment method from bank account, credit card or whatever, see any shipping charges or tax and then go ahead and make the payment . As soon as I got this "payment processed, item will be shipped" page with no paypal login, I was stunned and immediately logged into PayPal, checked and found this payment HAD actually gone through my paypal account. This now would overdraw my checking account for one thing plus it was completely unacceptable and I also didn't get to use my substantial gift cards. I immediately emailed the seller to cancel sale and refund payment and told her what had just happened which was of course totally awkward as I had never purchased from her before and luckily she refunded it, all within 5 minutes Then I called PayPal to find out why this breach happened and what they were going to do about it and PayPal tells me that it is eBay's fault and that my payment can be taken by eBay because they have access despite the fact these two companies are now separate? Really? This is how secure my money is with paypal that an outside company can take money from whatever source on my account they choose without me logging in? Are you kidding? After getting someone higher up I was told that it would be investigated but that since the seller refunded it, the payment was not taken from my bank and my cash was back in my PayPal account and I was assured that this time I will be able to login and choose my preferences to make payment including entering my gift cards. So even though now I was quite nervous and skeptical ,I tentatively went ahead and made the transaction only to find out that paypal HAD overdrawn my checking account despite what they said about my money being still in my bank account since the unauthorized payment processed and then I was told I was fine to go ahead and make my purchase. I have been using PayPal for all kinds of things now for AT LEAST 5 years feeling secure that my information was safe and I didn't have to share it with places I was purchasing from or giving money to and now my entire faith in PayPal has been shaken to the core due to this incident of processing a payment for over $2,000 without even allowing me to log in! I see online that I am NOT the only one this has happened to where a payment has processed without the PayPal login page being first given. What is going on?? I am scared by this!

Hi workinghard4th,

Welcome to our Community.

I think I know what might have happened here. At one point or another, you must have opted in for our new Turbo Checkout experience.

We've designed a new checkout flow that reduces the number of clicks required to complete a purchase. By remembering your PayPal login credentials, the checkout flow will circumvent logging in to PayPal, thereby making your checkout flow a lot quicker and simpler.

However, based on your message, I know you would prefer to enter your password manually at the checkout out and manage your funding sources this way.

As a result, why don't you visit your PayPal account to opt out by:

  1. Go to www.paypal.com/uk and log in to your account.
  2. Click the Settings icon at the top of the page.
  3. Select Security in the black bar near the top of the page.
  4. In the 'Log in with PayPal' section, click Edit.
  5. Select eBay Inc and then click Remove

I hope this helps and I'm sorry that you've had this difficult experience with your PayPal account.

Hi Conor

I just tried to follow your instructions below, I want to ba asked for my password every time I make a purchase. I couldn't find the 'Log in with PayPal' section you describe but I turned off "one touch" on all devices assumming that was the same thing. I just made a purchase on ebay and was not asked for my Pay Pal password.

Please advise how I can get the pass word request reinstated.

Many thanks

Fiona
