The next day a different woman called to tell me that the appointment was for the following day but they moved it up to do me a favor. That was false; the appointment was for that day, not the next. They lied to me because the woman the day before must have told her to do so! I was able to get one of the accounts but they wouldn’t give me the other one, even though I was the beneficiary on that one too, due to a third one that I wasn’t listed on with no beneficiary.
As the beneficiary on the "main" savings account that was necessary to open all other accounts, I called the next day and used virtual banking, which took another 30 minutes to access. I found a woman who connected me with someone different from the special accounts department, who then gave me the next account without any issue, but not the third. I waited to receive checks in the mail (they would not transfer any of the money electronically to my bank), then called back to try to get the rest, but there was no beneficiary listed at all. I was told it was opened online within the last few months before my parent died, which was strange, because my parent was not fond of online banking and preferred to pay bills in person for the social interaction. They claimed it was my parent’s mistake, not their fault, and refused to help me. They told me to hire a probate attorney to access the money and to close the account that legally belonged to me upon death.
I informed them that this account was the only one our family was having trouble transferring and that it should go to me, since I am the named beneficiary for the rest of the accounts, including the main membership account. But they were repeatedly rude and ignorant, telling me to have "my lawyer call their lawyers." When I asked for the legal department's phone number and the name of their attorney, they said they "didn't have to give me that information," nor any of their last names or the name of the branch manager or any phone number or extension of anyone else to talk to, and told me to call the automated phone line.
Their behavior is contradictory to a department that specializes in deceased members’ accounts and assisting their families. My parents maintained these accounts because of their marketing to military personnel, families, various government agencies, and the Tennessee Valley Authority's union members, who are not wealthy people with attorneys on retainer.
These people have caused me so much stress, distress, and disappointment. I can't believe they operate this credit union in this manner, especially the main branch on Wynn Drive in Huntsville, AL. So, take your money and VA loans, boat loans, etc., to a big bank or any other bank that maybe cares about how they treat people. Do not trust any of your financial needs to these people. They are taking advantage of the elderly, military veterans, and blue-collar workers and families with their small-town small credit union facade. And now my family is spending thousands on an attorney and months in the courts to get my parents' hard-earned military career family's life savings away from these people.
5 stars..
