I already started a post about this, but I need to know how to fix my system to allow us to play both at the same time... any ideas?

Right now, I can not play two of the same or different games at the same time on both xboxes. I am so freaking ticked off right now...

Are you using one Xbox live account or two separate live accounts? If using the same live account, the other person playing needs to be logged in under their user profiled . Set the secondary Xbox as your home Xbox. Then they should be able to piggyback off your account. I have no idea if this will solve your problem but this is how my son and I were able to make it work.

One Live account if possible, but I am not sure it is...

I have two profiles, one Live account. I set up the "home" xbox, logged out of the main profile linked to the Live account, but it won't allow us to play games on the two units at once.

One account is not possible. Each player has to have their own account.

I have six or so Xbox Ones in my house and they can all play simultaneously. You just have to give everyone their own account.

If you want to only pay for one account, you can have two Xboxes use the same paid-for account. This takes advantage of Microsoft's policy of home Xboxes have all the rights of the paid account while the paid account keeps its rights wherever it goes.

1. Have the paid-for account choose the Xbox that the non-paid-for is going to play on as their home Xbox. This grants anyone on that console the ability to use the paid-for features.
2. Have the paid-for account player play on the other Xbox.

So, do you have to pay the $70/year xbox live subscription and then have to buy games for each xbox, or does the "home" feature allow you to share games across multiple Xbox live accounts and profiles?

The home Xbox has access to all of the games that the paid-for user has access to. You can get one copy of a game and play it simultaneously on multiple consoles.

You can also play other people on the non-home console as long as the paid-for user is logged in. Just switch to the non-paid for user while the paid-for is in the background and it still works.

Example:

My (User1) home Xbox One is the one upstairs.
Everything I own and all content I have access to is available to my daughter (User2) on that Xbox whether I'm logged in or not.
I login to my downstairs Xbox and have access to all the same games. My daughter and I can play together.
My other daughter switches to her account on the downstairs Xbox after I've logged in, leaving my account logged in in the background.
Both of my daughters can play all the games that were paid for on User1's account.

Microsoft is actually pretty generous in this.

I have an original xbox one upstairs as the home xbox (son uses with his account) for my ultimate account. My Series X is downstairs and I log in with my live account. That's one set.

then both girls decided they also wanted to play Fortnite with their brother. My old xbox one x is also upstairs and is the new home xbox account for older daughter (gold account 2). the other original xbox is in another room and younger daughter logs in with gold account 2.

so for four players, two live gold accounts. mine is ultimate through summer 2022 with the buy a bunch of gold and upgrade for $1.
the girls' is gold for one year, I don't expect them to keep playing for too long.

oh and some (most) days my wife is not a yuuuuge fan of video games.

But you have to have an Xbox live account for each user, right? Or at least for each console...?

Yes, each user has a Live account, but those are free.

Used to live with one of my buddies who found an Xbox in a duffel bag and reacted as if he'd found a missing t-shirt or something. I was floored.

He worked at Xbox as the time and collected the collector's editions though, so it made sense.

I have six. I got tired of my family *****ing about learning different TV interfaces and settled on the Xbox One as my standard set top box.

Digital licensing is fun to explain, haha.

Xbox Live Tiers
Xbox Live Gold (Paid): All Online Benefits which includes Online Multiplayer
Xbox Live Silver (Free): You can buy games online, play F2P games online, and watch Netflix

Every Microsoft Account has an Xbox Live Silver account already.

Home Xbox
Each Xbox Live Account can have up to one Xbox (Home Xbox) for offline play of digital purchases.

Home Xbox Benefits
-Anyone can play a game the on the Home Xbox without the purchaser having to stay signed-in
-If the account tied to the Xbox has Xbox Live Gold, anyone will have Gold benefits on that Xbox without the subscriber having to sign-in. This is idea is for families and it's a better alternative than in the past when you had to pay $120/year for a family subscription.

How do I set an Xbox to be my Home Xbox?
Go into Settings and it should be under General/Personalization/My home Xbox
Note, you are only allowed to switch home consoles 3 times per year.

Playing One Game License on Multiple Consoles
The idea is you can't just install a game you own on friends consoles so they don't have to pay for it and play. But there's a trick! Because of how this Home licensing works, the purchaser of the game can play the game on a non-home console as long as it's connected to the internet to verify with the servers of purchase and the person who doesn't own the game can play on the Home Xbox of the purchaser at the same time.

Yeah, seems like we go through explaining this process every couple months. It's all good though, we are happy to help.

I had to go through this with my Brother-in-Law and his kids recently. I explained it very carefully and precisely... "It's still not working!". After a brief pause I asked "who was signed in when you set that Xbox as the 'home' console". Yep, they had the wrong account so I had to go step by step... Make sure **** gamertag is the ONLY gamertag signed in... now set as your home console. Eureka... it worked.

Just funny cause it's so simple in my brain, but so many people just cannot get it unless you hold their hand all the way through it.

FYI, Microsoft just removed the XBL Gold requirement for free to play games. So Fortnite can be played without a subscription.

sorry to revive such an old post. but i'm new to old this xbox thing.

how can your 6 or so consoles all play simultaneously and then your solution only applies to 2 xboxes? according to what i have been reading, once an account is signed in in one console, it cannot sign in simultaneously in a different one.

TIA

All 6 can play a free game like Fortnite if each one is using a different login. You can only share paid content across two Xboxes at a time though.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Late to this post but want to see if someone can clarify for me as this is kinda problem we are having.

I have a xbox one (digital downloaded COD game) & xbox x (COD game on cd), also we both have a xbox paid account.

My question is with the above set up does one or the other still need to be set as a home xbox? Sorry got lost in all the different talk in this thread.

Thanks

No because both accounts have Xbox live. One account owns CoD Digital and one has the physical version so you have two copies of the game. When you have just one digital copy of the game, that's where the tricky Home thing comes in.

The idea behind having a Home Xbox is so you can play digital games offline and Xbox doesn't have to verify that you own the rights to the digital game whereas physical copy is physically in the Xbox and can't be duplicated. It also allows any account on that Home Xbox to play your digital games without you signing in. When you're on a Xbox that's not your Home Xbox and you download a digital game you bought, Xbox has to verify that you own the game with a constant online connection. Using this logic, it's possible to play one digital copy on two Xboxes. The owner of the digital copy plays on the non-home Xbox and the non-owner plays on the owners home Xbox. Of course you need two different accounts and the account on the owners home Xbox can be a free account because the owner of the Home Xbox has Xbox Live. Xbox Live can be shared to every account on the home Xbox of the account that pays the subscription.

If you're having issues, make sure both systems have Crossplay enabled in Settings.
