Configuring Microsoft Office Communicator

Instructions for accessing and conversing through MS Office Communicator

For Current Faculty, Staff, and Students of Philadelphia University

Requirements

·         a personal computer connected to the Internet (through your internet service provider)

·         a web browser, such as Internet Explorer (Windows) or Safari (Macintosh)

·         a Philadelphia University network account and password

 

Outcomes

This document will assist you in accessing and using the MS Office Communicator from any location on the internet. With this document you will be able to:

Locating MS Office Communicator:

1.    Online

·         When operating off campus or from a computer without a Client version of MS Office Communicator, you can directly access the Communicator through your web browser at http://im.philau.edu/

 

The page should look like this:

 

 

·         You may receive an error message which simply means you must turn off your popup blocker in order to launch the MS Office Communicator.

2.    On-campus PCs:

Most Philadelphia University computers will already have the MS Office Communicator Client version downloaded and running.

 

The link for this can be found in the bottom right system tray next to the computer clock.

 

·         If the icon is not in your system tray, you can locate the Communicator through your start menu located in the bottom left corner of your screen. Click on start, then All Programs, then locate MS Office Communicator:

 

 

1.  If you do not already have the full version of the Communicator program:

 

1)    Go to http://im.philau.edu/client.htm

2)    Click on the “Client Installer” Link.

3)    At the Security Warning screen, click Run.

4)    Simply follow the on screen instructions and click “Finish” to complete.

Logging In:

 

You must have a Philadelphia University network account in order to log in and use MS Office Communicator. This is the same account name as is assigned for Webmail and WebAdvisor.  

 

·      Faculty and Staff user names are the last name, followed by the initial of the first name.

     Student user names are a last name, followed by a 1-5 digit number.

·      Your password must be changed from the default password in order to access this site.

1.  Online version:

 

 

1)    When accessing the online version of MS Office Communicator, you must first distinguish whether or not the computer you are using is a public or private use computer. Click the appropriate dot under the ‘Security’ heading.

2)    Under the Sign In heading, in the top bar, type your domain followed by your username. (student domain: student; faculty/staff domain: philacol)

3)    In the following bar, type your university network password.

4)    Next, select your Language from the pull down menu.

5)    Finally left-click on the Sign In button (or simply press the Enter key).

 

You should then see a popup window with the Communicator program and contact list. You may close out of all other screens and it will continue to operate.

Logging out

 

Click on the colored dot and select “Sign Out.” Simply clicking the "X” will not sign you out of Communicator; it will only minimize the window.
