STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – National Grid customers should expect to see an increase on their bill of more than $200 over the next five months, the company said.

Due to the worldwide increase in natural gas prices – blamed on heightened global demand and lagging natural gas production -- National Grid customers on Staten Island, as well as in Brooklyn and Queens, will likely see an increase in their monthly cost.

The increase will amount to an average of $46 per month, per customer, but could be more, National Grid said.

Comparing five-month periods, collectively, bills from November 2021 to March 2022 will be an average of $229 more than bills from November 2020 to March 2021.

Staten Island residents used an average of 720 therms during the five winter months, referred to as winter heating season.

The figures provided by National Grid are approximate and could change depending on weather conditions in the upcoming months, the utility company said. The colder the weather, the more electricity and heat people use.

“While National Grid can’t control this global rise in natural gas prices, we are committed to helping you manage higher bills,” National Grid said in a release.

National Grid customers in Upstate New York are also likely to see an increase in natural gas prices. Those customers could pay $155 more over five months where the average customer uses 713 therms of natural gas, according to Syracuse.com, the Advance/SILive’s sister website.

“This is the largest increase that we’ve seen in many years,” a National Grid official said during a recent press conference.
