Giants sign ex-Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith to practice squad

The New York Giants announced on Friday that they have signed former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith to their practice squad.

Smith was a second-round pick of the Cowboys in the 2016 NFL draft. However, he spent his rookie season on injured reserve after tearing two ligaments in his knee while playing in the Fiesta Bowl as a member of Notre Dame.

In 2017, Smith returned to the field and has not missed another game due to injury since. He’s appeared in 70 games with 56 starts, recording 517 tackles (318 solo, 20 for a loss), six forced fumbles, 15 QB hits, 9.0 sacks, 20 passes defensed and two interceptions.

Smith was named to the Pro Bowl in 2019

After being leapfrogged on the roster by Micah Parsons earlier this year, the Cowboys released Smith. He went on to sign with the Green Bay Packers in early October, appeared in two games and then was released in November.

Additionally, the Giants also placed safety J.R. Reed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, defensive back Natrell Jamerson on the Practice Squad/COVID-19 list and activated defensive lineman David Moa as a COVID-19 replacement.
