Does UPS require a signature or someone home to receive iPhone on release day?

No.
iPhone got left at my front door by UPS yesterday. Guy didn’t even knock.
When I got my well specd 27” iMac last year it needed someone present (virtual covid signature).

when I got my pro display xdr earlier this year it needed someone present (virtual covid signature).

Hell, even the stand that came before the display needed someone present!

but iPhones get left anyway sounds far fetched

This is what is shows on my UPS page (ordered from Apple.com). If your package requires a signature you can sign up for UPS My Choice you can pre-sign on the website if you want them to leave at your door.

No one has mentioned where they ordered their phone, and that makes a difference. Apple traditionally requires a signature for iPhone deliveries, but other companies like carriers or Best Buy may not. If you check the tracking number on fedex or UPS it should tell you whether a signature is required or noT.

Really depends on your specific delivery person on your route.

My UPS guy will drop off any package, signature required or not regardless of if I signed in advance online.
The FedEx guy here on the other hand refuses to deliver any signature required package without physically seeing me.

In the previous city I lived in, I had the opposite where the FedEx guy didn't give a damn, but UPS always left slips if I didn't come to the door, even if I had signed online.

I tried to find in the free UPS My Choice preferences where I might have specified "no signatures needed"
I couldn't it.

My UPS shipment does not show “signature required”, Apple might have made this change due to covid because usually they require signatures on their deliveries.

I always presign/set up the release authorization on the tracking page and leave a note instructing the driver to leave it on the porch with my signature and never had a problem.

That is a great point. I’ve always ordered through the carrier.

I’m not sure if you buy directly from Apple that a signature may be required. Anytime I’ve received my phone from the carrier, UPS has always left it in front of my door, giving me a heart attack.

I have the ups app and it doesn’t show that a signature is required or not anywhere. The website while logged into my choice also shows the package coming tomorrow but nothing about a signature. I guess it’s not safe to assume it will be delivered in my absence from being home ?

Verizon told me yes to a signature. In the past 20 years things have been left without, but I'm seeing a swing back to signature required in the past year with all the package thefts. I had another package this year from fedex, I missed the guy by 20 minutes and tried to have it redirected to the fedex store down the street from me, only to find the sender had it locked down so it could ONLY go to my house and be signed for.

My first iPhone (4s) was sent back to the hub because I wasn't home and they wouldn't accept my note as a signature. Then we had a freak storm and I had to wait nearly a week to get it from there.

It’s scary to think of just leaving a package that could easily be worth $1,000 on a porch, especially when it’s delivered on a publicized release day. I wfh, so I’m not concerned. My corgi barks excitedly whenever the UPS truck drives by. So, I’ll have notification.

Just curious where did you order it from?

In the past, Apple always required a signature for mine. But this time I don't see the requirement in UPS my choice or a place to pre-sign online. Something's different. Maybe it's COVID. But I don't see the signature requirement on my tracking.

That's generally the case but was absolutely not the case last year because of covid. Mine was left at my door(as expected).
