AOL Lifestream... WTF!?

I've never heard of it but I did try the link they supplied in the article. Whether I used my user name at .mac or .me, this is what I got in return:

I am going to be interested in finding out if my .mac address has been signed up automatically. To me, this seems like something Apple would not just allow but then again Apple surprises people quite frequently. I did search my .mac and .me address and came up with little to nothing of interest to me.

It did sound a bit unlike apple and more google.

I signed up for MobileMe in Dec 10 so maybe its a new thing as I was able to log straight in. Eek

Google has nothing to do with it though, right? I thought this was independent of Google. If you meant it's google-esque then yes, it is google buzz-esque.

I would like to hear from other members who have .mac and .me. I've had .mac since 2004, I am not sure that matters much. I don't use it for much either so I'm not sure how much I care aside from the basic, wtf of being signed up automatically.

I don't have any twitter accounts, facebook etc so its not a major problem but on the other hand i don't have these as i don't like signing up to stuff.

If people are able to log on, just a heads up, it defaults your account to public! :(

For MobileMe subscribers (I don't know about AOL members), this service has been pushed on them without request nor even notification. It automatically publishes your AIM and MobileMe status updates. The problem is that the default privacy settings make these status updates FULLY PUBLIC. I have just discovered that: I googled my name, and suddenly, I had an archive of my MobileMe Adium status updates.

MobileMe and AIM users should be made aware of this outrageous privacy breach, and it would be nice if Adium made it possible to edit those privacy settings (I have also sent an angry email to AOL). A lambda Adium user (like I am) assumes by default that his/her status is only visible to his/her contacts, when in fact it has now been made publicly available on the web.

I just turned mine off.... it's definitely AOL's doing. I sent a feedback to Apple about it and asked them to contact AOL in regard to MobileMe addresses. I don't care what AOL does with regular screen names but the real issue is with .Mac/MobileMe screen names that follow our accounts--end users would have no way of knowing this is on or off, and it's public by default.

I encourage you all to submit feedback to Apple.

I just sent an email to AOL via the feedback button. Will email Apple too.

This is ridiculous?! How the hell did AOL get our email addresses and passwords?

This is directly linked to MobileMe. I just changed my password on me.com, and AOL LifeStream would only accept the new password.

This is frikkin ridiculous!

I had an aol address associated with iChat, but when i logged into aol lifestream I only saw my "friends" that also have aol addresses. Did not make any auto connections for me.

So I spoke to Customer Service via the online chat thingy.

The lad I spoke to also had MM and was rather worried himself about the whole thing. Unfortunately I had to leave the conversation early, but he assured me that his Senior Advisor would get in contact me within 48hrs about the issue.

He also passed the information to some Apple engineers so they can look into the issue too.

I will let you know when I hear something.

I just checked and AOL had setup accounts for both my @mac.com and @me.com email addresses, set to be public. My mac.com account also had my cell number listed.

This is a huge problem. We pay a lot of money to avoid this crap. If I wanted to to plugged into a social network, I would use one of the "free" services. I think this is what will finally cause me to leave .Mac/Mobile Me after 7 years.

I setup my mobileme account a few hours ago and I found this thread. I went to the aol site but no dice. Can't find my login.

I'm glad some of you haven't been set up. Would be good to find the root of the issue though.

I was just able to login using my @me.com address.

I didn't think anyone used anything AOL related anymore. Even when you get the bunny, you are still logged in.

Thank you for your recent inquiry.

Lifestream is bundled with AIM for Windows 7+, AIM for Mac 2.0+, AIM
Express, AIM for iPhone, AIM for iPad, AIM for Android, AIM for Windows
Mobile. If you are using any of the above versions of the AIM software,
Lifestream is a feature of the product. You can, however, hide the tabs
you don't use by clicking the Lifestream tab and selecting the drop down
arrow on the tab. Select Hide Lifestream & Me tabs.

You can manage the services that show up in your AOL Lifestream from the
web anytime. Type http://lifestream.aol.com/settings and log in with
your account credentials. Click the trashcan icon to remove this service
from your Lifestream. Any future posts from this service will be
removed; however, all posts made previously will remain in AOL
Lifestream. You can also manage your services from any of our
applications' Me tabs.

You can decide who has access to your Lifestream activity. We offer
three levels of privacy: Just Me, Buddies Only, and Everyone-Public. If
you choose Just Me, your Lifestream activities will not be available to
anyone but you.

To manage your settings, go to http://lifestream.aol.com/settings. Next,
find the service you would like to manage. Services you have added are
listed under the heading "You are currently using". Click Settings and
choose the option right for you under the "Who can see my activities?"
menu. Don't forget to click Save Settings. Continue until you have set
settings for each service.

I don't use any of the applications at the top, so I still have no idea why they have created an account for me.
