The union that represents American Airlines pilots is suing American Airlines, accusing the airline of illegally changing contract terms.
When pilots are trained and evaluated, a special type of pilot oversees the process. That is known as a “check airmen," as in they are checking on the trainee.
The process, whether it’s a simulator or in an actual jet, is kept as real as possible with all the cabin seats filled as though it were a real flight, right down to the person who fills an empty seat.
The Allied Pilots Association says those jobs are supposed to go to the check-airmen, exclusively. But the union says, even though that’s spelled out in the contract, American has made a switch this week and is using non-union pilots for those seat-fillers.
The union wants both a preliminary and a permanent injunction blocking the company from continuing the practice.
KRLD News has asked American Airlines for a response, but has not heard back.
