I worked with Candice and it was sadly a very bad experience. I was going to get a VA, first time home loan through BHFCU and the experience was great until we put in an offer. From there we had very minimal communication and when we did get an email, she would not answer our questions and just asked us to be patient with her. She told us multiple times that she would call and we never heard from her. My realtor got only 1 call and a couple emails from her during the month and some change that we worked with her. She told us that we could not close in 30 days because the appraisal would take longer than that, but the appraisal came back in 5 days after it was ordered. The experience was so bad that we went with a different lender for the same exact house and from re applying to closing it was 2 weeks. When we switched to them I heard more from her in the 20 min phone call complaining about her team and the VA than I did the whole time working with her. It was very disappointing as I love working with BHFCU. I definitely recommend not working with her and I never will go to BHFCU for a mortgage in the future.
I have done business with this credit union for several years. I have always been under the guise that a credit union is always better than a bank to deal with your finances. Definitely not the case in this instance! I was okay with the service here except the overdraft fees. This place will charge you a $25 fee for a very very small transaction. You may think this is a fair practice considering they do pay for the transaction which occurred. It can be a convenience for sure. The problem is that $25 for a $2 transaction is not only unfair, it's greedy, shady, and shameful. In fact, I have NEVER seen a credit union charge so many fees. They do not seem to have a limit on these fees either. The good news is that they might refund some of them for you which is very nice. I have had great experience with customer service here. Recently, I had a series of unfortunate events occur. There was some financial strife which led to some overdrafts on our account. I called and spoke to a rep about making an arrangement about my loan as I could not pay it at the time. He said that it wouldn't be a problem and as long as I could get the account current, I could defer a payment. I deposited a large amount of money to bring the account current and to cover any incoming transactions. I received a call from the rep telling me that he had made a mistake and was unable to give me a deferment of any kind due to the type of loan. He then said as he had misspoken, he would go back in and reverse past overdraft fees to cover the loan payment for that month. That is when things went south. The balance was in the positive before this and after the loan payment was made. When the expected charges started coming out, I started getting charged overdraft fees for a positive balance! So the $600 that I had deposited did not even matter as they were charging me $25 every transaction when the balance was positive! I called them and asked why this was occurring and they fed me some song and dance about me not seeing what they were seeing. Ok- so I asked to speak with a manager. I sent in everything that I was seeing. The balance was positive and they continued to charge me overdrafts- $250 worth! The manager REFUSED to overturn these. Her reasoning is because they have refunded so many of them in the past several years that I had been with them. They are blatantly erroneous. At that time, I expressed my disappointment in the institution in general. A credit union charging that many overdraft fees? REALLY?? I told her I would pay the loan and close my account. She stated that was fine. I still never ever got an explanation as to what happened there. A month later, my daughter passed away unexpectedly. This led to not only grief but more financial strife. Needless to say, I could not pay my loan payment. Even if I could've, they only allow you to pay it out of your account with them which is over $300 in the negative that I straight refuse to pay! So now my credit is being ruined with late payments and fees. I even entered into a CSS (consolidation) and they would NOT work with me there either. Today, I received an email from them and when I called them, they wondered if I could make a payment. I would love to make a payment if you make this whole thing right. The whole thing is so frustrating and wrong! I am so disappointed in this institution as a credit union. Even my CapitalOne Bank doesn't charge OD fees! The last time I saw something like this was several years ago when Fifth Third Bank was resequencing charges in order to charge ODs. They were sued very publicly for it. In fact, I noticed what they were doing right before I demanded that they refund all of the ODs and closed my accounts! Then a month later, I get a notice of the multimillion dollar lawsuit for resequencing charges. Hmmmmm sure does seem familiar. Now, I'm not saying that I'm perfect and that I have not overdrawn my account. I take accountability for those instances. At least I understood what happened and could connect the dots. In this instance, it's confusing as to what even happened. What's more confusing is the fact that they refuse to make this right. For those of you who may think this is some whiny attempt to not pay a debt that I owe, take a look at the amounts that people pay EVERY YEAR in OD fees. It's in the billions! Over 8 billion every year to be exact. That's just insane! How does it make any sense that someone who doesn't have enough money to cover the transaction has enough for hundreds of dollars in fees? That is straight up LUDACRIS! Many banks are doing away with them altogether as they are recognizing this fact. They want to protect the consumer. As far as I know, BHFCU is not planning on taking them away so you draw your own conclusion. I would love to get this resolved so that I can pay my loan payments and do my business elsewhere. It's a shame that they are not willing to do the same.

Worst banking experience in 40 years. Bill pay cannot sent payments directly to the address you provide. My payments went to another state. The employee advised to find another method of payment and do not use bill pay. They do not know why it does not work. Also, you cannot deposit money unless is comes directly from an employer. We are retired and cannot transfer money from a 401k because this is considered "fraudulent activity."
My last review did not show up for some reason. I've been a member for over 30 years but my husband and I will be removing our money from this bank. Do not have a joint account with a child because if they overdraw on their own account this bank will take the money in the joint account. It doesn't matter if they're a minor. I can't understand why they would let a minor overdraw a few hundred dollars. Customer service very poor at this bank.
Very bare-bones bank. Good for cashing a check, basic savings, and paying bills online if you're okay waiting a week for money to move around. The card I got only worked once in the 8 years I've banked with them, can't choose a pin like other banks they choose it for you, the website is often buggy, they don't inform me when they fail to take out for a loan they just freeze my account and send out a letter even if I'm right there with money in hand. Awful service.
Gave me a chance when in desperate need when no one else would. I had poor credit score but they had givenr alone had easy low parents that did not start the a month after. Quick too.

BHFCU is not the bank we join 30 years ago. Can't get service and cannot talk to manager or the bank. They have become just another huge money farm like all the other banks there
Awful! Zero common courtesy and straight disrespect from the loan officer we were working with. Went to another bank, to find out BHFCU has a bad history with mortgage loans and they loose people all the time for the uneducated people they hire and therefore lose buyers/clients. We are very disappointed and will be complaining to the bank manager.
As a member of Black Hills Federal and also a member of another bank (large corporation based) I can say that the banking experience here is without a doubt easier, and more enjoyable. Customer service is top notch from BHFCU, and they are always willing to help you out with a problem. They do not hound you to try and get you to sign up for anything that you do not ask about, at least in my experiences. After switching most of my banking over to the other bank for awhile it was quickly evident that BHFCU was the better choice and I now have resumed all my banking with them. The loan rates are competitive and most of the time better, customer service is top notch, and the service is quick and simple.
I've always vaguely disliked banks and banking. It always seems more complicated than it needs to be, and more expensive that it needs to be just to have someone keep my money and give it to the people I tell him/her to. Black Hills Federal Credit Union has changed my mind!
Customer service is always quick, efficient, and actually seems concerned with my problems being fixed. They've not only been a basic bank to me, but also helped me to find options that work for me to build a better credit score, and gave me several options to choose from for renter's insurance at a great price.
I'm not a high profile, high money member, but they see me at least once a week, and have tellers who actually remember things about me, like how my day was going a month ago. I love this level of customer service attention to clients! They are always offering good rates on loans and credit cards through their bank, and if I ever need either of those, I'll go through Black Hills Federal Credit Union for sure!
My wife has had an account with BHFCU for a long time now. She got it when she was a teenager and had used it then, but it wasn't until we got married that we really saw benefits. They consistently have the lowest rates of any of the banks/credit unions in our town and provide excellent service on top of that. We financed our home through them with an excellent rate and refinanced a few years later when the rates when down. It was a very painless process. Because we have our car loans and home mortgage loans through them we qualified for a very low APR credit card that we also got. We have had no issues with any of our loans or credit cards and will continue to do business with BHFCU for the foreseeable future.
1. I have been a customer with Black Hills Federal Credit Union for 10 years and continue to find them giving the best rates. When it comes to personal loans, credit cards, or vehicle loans I always shop around with bigger banks either in my town or also online but Blacks Hills still continues to beat them. They have a friendly staff and great customer service. Shop around if you may but BHFCU will continually offer the best rates. I know that many people I know will agree that credit unions have many advantages over the bigger giants and that is because they strive on the community running as a family unit. Black Hills definitely fits that mold!
