Avoid CarCostCanada

I used CarCostCanada to research a vehicle purchase about 8 years ago and found the service useful. When I tried it again this past month the experience was very poor. First, it is true what others are saying that as soon as you sign-up and save a cost report you will receive multiple emails and texts from local car dealerships that are also paying CarCostCanada for leads. The message are automated and frequent. I ended up having to mark the dealership emial domain as spam because blocking one email was not enough; they used multiples.

Even more troubling, however, is that the quality of cost information is very poor. My impression is that it is not cost information at all. The pricing I received on the CarCostCanada report showed that the dealer purchase cost was "higher" than the "selling" price. And, both prices were higher than what the dealer actually showed me after a test drive. I thought for sure there must be a mistake so I compared the report and the dealer's provided spec sheet line by line and every option was identical. The site didn't provide accurate cost information.

I did report my concerns to the company and received an email saying they would let me know when they had cost information available. Seems odd - carCOSTcanada? If you don't have costs for a car, why not just say so? Is providing the lead to the dealership more important than providing the information to customers that they have paid for?

I am concerned the business model of the site may have degenerated into email harvesting only.

Hello Tim and thank you for being a CarCostCanada Member since April 2009! We are sorry you feel things have gone wrong recently. As a long-time member who has paid us more than once for access to our proprietorial CarCostCanada Market Value Reports, it appears you forgot that referrals to a CarCostCanada Recommended Dealer are optional. Please contact our customer service team to update your account preferences.

CarCostCanada Recommended Dealers enter into an agreement to cooperate with CarCostCanada Members, promising the best available deals, high quality professionalism and exceptional first-in-line experience. Recommended Dealers also undergo a vetting process and receive training about sales sensitivity. Most CarCostCanada members report positive experiences with this model, so we are truly sorry you are not satisfied with it.

Our team of dealer experts is ready to advise all our 450,000+ CarCostCanada Members about managing relations with car dealers, to improve satisfaction and help with all aspects of the car buying experience.

In your review you appear to be cross referencing a few different events, making them sound like one continuous recent experience. In July 2023, you communicated with our customer service team about your account and a recent payment and you used your membership to access two deeply detailed reports about two different brand vehicles. Because we have CarCostCanada Recommended Dealers near you for those brands, you were referred to them.

Six months later, you came back and looked at one of those vehicles again, plus you looked at a third vehicle from another brand. We did not recommend a dealer for that third vehicle, however you report you visited a dealer about that vehicle and our pricing table was wrong versus what the dealer told you. Unfortunately, you never sent us what the dealer gave you, so we can’t comment on that. We do know this vehicle has not been well received by the market and most recent sales numbers show under 300 vehicles sold in Canada in 2023 (compared to 16,000 for one popular competitor).

We CAN say that we HAVE found a display discrepancy in the way we show numbers to our members. Some manufacturers charge their dealer a “hidden fee” that they are not allowed to “officially” pass on to the customer, but dealers do add the cost when calculating the price for customers. Our members deserve to understand all the costs involved. Up till now we probably over-explain this issue by adding this hidden fee to a mathematic table in our detailed reports. However, in the case of the vehicle you are looking at, due to small supply, the manufacturer has not officially released a “true cost” for the dealer, instead they pay dealers a “commission” for each one sold. Without a true cost, our system showed MSRP and then added the hidden fee, making the “total cost” higher than the MSRP. Elsewhere in the 5 reports you created for this vehicle we do explain this, but maybe you didn’t see that explanation? We will remove the fee from the math equation to avoid future confusion AND we will improve the explanation that we provide, and we truly thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

Despite your recent disappointment with our service, we hope you now understand a path to resolve your concerns and we look forward to you using our services again in the future!

Stay away from Carcostcanada and motormouth

I thought motormouth car reviews on YouTube was decent and fell for his pitch about better deal using his promo code at Carcostcanada get a new car at dealer invoice pricing. I am totally scammed. Their so-called invoice pricing $3849 more than what was listed from ford.ca for 2021 Ford Edge SEL. These scammers thinks rest of us buried our head in sands.

Useless information

Useless information. Looking to buy a ford mustang gt premium and its telling me that an msrp vehicle of 64 grand cost the dealership 58 grand and yet the same dealership and all other dealerships selling the same model are selling them for low 50s all of a sudden this month. If this thing told me that these dealers are capable of losing thousands of dollars on vehicles then i wouldnt have bought my vehicle thinking im paying close to cost when in reality its nowhere near their cost. Complete waste of time. Dont trust this information.

Hello CDN MUSL, we aren't sure where to start. First, our customer service team is available to help members by phone or live chat, so if you don't understand how to read our Price Report, please reach out to us. Since we have no record of you contacting us, its impossible to understand how you arrived at the prices you mentioned in your message. The basic retail price of the 2020 Ford Mustang GT Premium is $48,025, so you really need to explain your claims of a pricing discrepancy. Our Price Report explains the current invoice price of this and all new cars sold in Canada. It all takes into account the current Ford Employee Pricing promotion. In the end, if you are interested in getting the facts please contact our customer service staff.

(1) I'm not a member ..., but ...

(1) I'm not a member. I just tried the intro' car cost data complimentary quotation on a new car.
(2) All I received for my first search was the dealer's car cost/price set by Toyota Canada. I expected the "best" possible price for the customer on your trial / sample response. Obviously that is totally unsatisfactory.
(3) I logged on to CCC online and spoke to no one, it's impossible to rate your customer service agents communications.

Hi there, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! I took a look at your account history and I noticed that you priced out a 2019 Toyota Camry XLE. The price report you generated displays both the Retail Price (MSRP) and the Dealer Cost (Invoice Price) of the vehicle. Your report also provides you access to a Recommended Dealer who has been trained by CarCostCanada development specialists on how to properly assist CarCostCanada members . This is mainly what our service entails and is outlined on our website. We also have live chat agents available around the clock to provide our members with any assistance they may need. If you require any assistance at all in the future, please do not hesitate to reach out to us via email: member-support@carcostcanada.com - live chat directly through our website or by telephone at 1-866-453-6995 ext 200 - thanks again!

This is a 'dealer driven' program

This is a 'dealer driven' program. I don't appreciate being hassled by the dealer. I know how to contact them on my own if I'm interested in pursuing the details of the offer. In any case, it wasn't much of an offer though it might be a starting point for someone ready to do business.

Not worth my time

Not a simple process to find out how much you save by using Carcost. Also, you cannot calculate monthly lease rates. After calling customer service , I learned what the discount was , which was only $1800. The dealer had no issue discounting higher than this amount.

Hi Dave, we are saddened to hear that our service did not meet your expectations and that you felt it was not worth your time. Nonetheless, we are very happy to hear you were able to save even more than you thought you would without any issues from your dealer. Our main goal is to provide our members with confidence and savings by giving them access to information that you would not have access to if you were not a CarCostCanada member including incentives, rates, programs and most importantly, the invoice price of the vehicle. All of our lease and finance rates are updated on a monthly basis (or prior if necessary). If you were able to work up an even better deal than what was provided in your report, that is wonderful news. We are always happy to hear that a member was able to get an even better price, but our reports are there to provide a base price so that you know what your vehicle price should be in and around and what you should be saving. Our intentions are ALWAYS to get our members to save on their new vehicle purchase, and that's what took place here!

Double dip! Reports should be free!

You pay to get the dealer invoice price then they sales your information to a near by dealer! Double dip!!! No option to opt-out of the dealer sharing.

The report should be free or offert the option to not share our information to the dealer!!!!

I will probably never use again and definitely not recommend it!!

Looks like BS to me...

Looks like BS to me...
At the time of research, I looked up Acura MDX 2020 on carcostcanada and got the base model listed for $54,390. Then, I googled the same thing and the acura dealership came up CHEAPER, listed at $52.965 on their website, meaning you can probably haggle the price down even more...
I thought the whole point of carcostcanada site was to give you the lowest possible price the dealer would be able to give so that you know if you are getting ripped off or not. Useless

Car cost gives a good starting point…

Car cost gives a good starting point for negotiating the price you’d want to pay. A lot of dealers though do not want that as a starting point; they almost always start at msrp.

One neagative with carcost- it sends your quote to the nearest dealership to you, which may or may not want to deal with that price point; let the customer choose which dealership a copy of the estimate should be sent to.

Hi there GK,
Thank you very much for taking the time to provide us with your thoughts on your CarCostCanada experience. Your feedback is much appreciated! The dealer referral feature was put in place by us to assist with the purchase portion of the process. We base your referred dealer on the postal code that the member enters upon registration. You are then sent not to the closest dealership to you, but the recommended dealer (a dealership that takes part in the CarCostCanada program) that is within 100 KM of your location. We do not discourage our members from visiting any dealer of choice, but we can only guarantee that your "recommended dealer" will take your CarCostCanada price report into consideration. Our new and improved price reports show full details on price mark-ups which better help us to determine and understand the mark up that the dealer applies to the invoice price. This information can be found under the "Pricing Guidance" section of your report.
CarCostCanada has not yet built relations with every dealership as they may not have reached out to us yet, but the ones that we have do take part in our program and are listed in our reports if they are within the 100 KM

Not what you appear to be

I feel like you portray yourselves as advocates for the car buyer to help us get a better price but all you are is another way for car dealerships to market to us. Your lack of transparency makes me not trust you.

Hi David, thank you for taking the time out to leave us with your review on our services. We are disappointed to hear that the experience was not what you expected.

CarCostCanada’s prime objective has always been to bring new car buyers and dealers closer together. We fulfill that mandate by eliminating most of the uncertainty that consumers feel about the price they should pay for the new vehicle that they have chosen.

Knowing the dealer cost and the full spectrum of all available incentives, puts the purchaser and the dealer on the same page with respect to price. This allows the consumer to focus on their vehicle selection instead of being worried about the quality of their “deal”.

Our members are referred to a “Recommended Dealer” because all new vehicles in Canada are sold and delivered by a dealer. Working with a dealer is part of the purchase process and we believe that our information and referral (to the dealer) are the foundation on which a trusting relationship is built.

We are very clear that our service includes a dealer referral. This point is mentioned on the following web pages; the start page, the Sign Up Page, the FAQ page, the How it Works page, the Member Benefits page and our Privacy Policy.

The information provided was thorough…

The information provided was thorough and detailed. My phone call into their office to answer a specific question was handled professionally and accurately.
My only question/concern was with how close the dealer cost was to the MSRP. The markup worked out to approx. 2% above dealer cost to arrive at the MSRP. When we went in to make the deal, we were able to double the discount, which the dealer offered after going through their offer with a fine tooth comb.
Overall, we were pleased with the help that we received from CarCostCanada. Thanks! Would highly recommend them!

Surprised

I wasn’t aware of your cost structure when I signed up so was very surprised when there was a cost associated with the second report. More than that I didn’t know carcost sends your information to a car dealer. I got a call from a dealership soon after I completed the second report

Hello Jerry, first we really appreciate you taking the time to get back to us.

I would just like to clarify two points for you; we do actually provide two (2) CarCostCanada Price Reports at no cost whatsoever. You will also be able to get a Price Report on a Comparable Vehicle at no cost. For example if you run a Price Report on a Honda CR-V, you would be offered a Price Report on a Nissan Rogue at no cost.

Regarding the call or email that you might have received from a dealership; our Recommended Dealer program is mentioned on our index / start page. We include a referral to a Recommended Dealership where ever possible. All new vehicles are sold through a new car dealership and we strongly believe that being referred to a cooperative dealership will result in a much more satisfying new vehicle purchase experience.

If you require any assistance, please reach out to our support team via the Live Chat tool, located in the bottom right corner of every page on our web site.

Good luck with your new vehicle purchase

Removes tension in bargaining

Website is easy to use and cost effective. Gives full detailed spec of any car and any trim and easy to print and better than car company website. Good to have cost report from this company before you start negotiating. Also provides suggested dealers near home.

Was expecting to see actual invoice…

Was expecting to see actual invoice prices, but they weren't accurate at all. I guess most people who have used the service don't have any experience in the automotive industry. The CCC app is really just a Lead Generator, which was disappointing.

Thank you sharing your thoughts with us! We are disappointed to hear of your dissatisfaction with our service. CarCostCanada, is in fact the very first company that provides dealer invoice pricing to it’s members. The prices we include in our reports come directly from the manufacturer itself. All of the pricing displayed via our website are current and updated. Each manufacturer tends to update their rates, programs and incentives monthly. This is why we have a wonderful data team put in place here to ensure that all pricing information is updated and accurate on a monthly basis. There are instances where there may be a change in price, rate or incentive within that month. We are made aware, and proceed to make the appropriate adjustments on our end as well. With that being said, our mission at CarCostCanada is to arm members with every piece of information they need to walk into the dealership with to ensure they are getting the best price possible, Our service is built around letting members know exactly what the dealer cost is. The invoice price we provide is in fact 100% accurate. I took a look at your history and I noticed there hasn’t been any contact between you and our member support team. We would be happy to reach out to you to further discuss this matter and provide any assistance or clarification necessary. One of our member support agents will be contacting you soon. Thanks again for your feedback

Varying experience

Four years ago the specified contact at Wietzes Motors was able to offer 3% above the dealers invoice with no haggling. I was less impressed by the arrangement at Lexus. Having a CarCost reference sheet made no difference, and it did not apparently mattered which salesman I would be dealing with.

Hi Aj,
First, we would like to thank you very much for being a loyal CarCostCanada member. We appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your thoughts on our services. I took a look at your member account and I noticed that there has not been a report built for a Lexus vehicle. Unfortunately, based on this information, we are unable to confirm whether or not you visited a recommended Lexus dealership. Currently, not all dealers take part in CarCostCanada's program, so if the dealer did not take your report into consideration, it is highly possible you did not visit a recommended dealer. We stress the importance of visiting the recommended dealer to our members as we cannot guarantee that a local dealer (not on the program) will use your report. If you would like to discuss this further, we would be happy to hear more details from you regarding the dealer you visited with. We would also like to confirm whether or not the dealer was recommended. We can be contacted via live chat directly through our website, 1-866-453-6995 ext 200 between 9AM and 5PM Eastern time or member-support@carcostcanada.com - thanks again

Data is Power...

After a couple of hiccups involving personnel listed as CarCost contacts who were no longer employed by the dealerships, I found the pricing data supplied by CarCost both helpful and interesting from the perspective of a potential purchaser. It’s so much more effective to bargain UP rather than DOWN not knowing the true “bottom line”. I felt empowered by the process. Thank you.

Didn't meet my expectation

I got a price report on a new Acura RDX model. When I clicked on the Buy Now button, I realized there is a $99 fee to be referred to a dealer, which was not mentioned anywhere in the website (at least I haven't seen it before). However, the price that was offered in the email was a wide range that was not much lower than MSRP. The lowest price that I could get was not giving me even the average discount reported on the website. So I didn't take the fee-based service, and I just negotiated my own price with a dealer, and I was able to get a very good discount about 2% above the dealer's invoice price.

Hi Raymond, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. We are happy to hear that you were able to negotiate such a wonderful mark-up on your brand new vehicle! Here at CarCostCanada, to sign up and get your TWO (2) price reports is absolutely FREE. Once those two reports are used, our members will then be asked to upgrade to our Expert membership which is $30.00. At that point you will get 5 additional invoice reports to price and build for 5 more vehicles but, there is no charge for the two initial reports nor is there a charge to receive a recommended dealer. A dealer referral is based on your postal code. Our Dealer Referral service is provided to those members who have a Recommended Dealer (a dealer that takes part in the CarCostCanada program) within 100 KM of their location. With that being said, members who do not receive a Recommended Dealer in their report are offered the "BuyNow" option at $99.00. This is a service request that many of our members take advantage of as they may not have a Recommended Dealer nearby. You are not obligated to taking part in the "BuyNow" Program. One of our Development Specialists will then locate and aim to get the BEST possible price on behalf of the member. The price range provided is to assure our members that we will do our best to get you a final price within that range. There are members who get the "BuyNow" option and do not want to take part. They simply reach out to us by telephone, email or live chat to ask if we can provided them with a Recommended Dealer that they can visit and we are always happy to do so. We strongly encourage our members to reach out to us with any inquiries so that we can provide understanding and clarification if necessary. CarCostCanada provides many service to suit many different members. Many members take part in the "BuyNow" service as it is suitable for them, but you are not obligated. All in all, it is not $99.00 to receive a Dealer Referral. This offer is dependent on your postal code but again we encourage our members to reach out to us if they do not prefer it.

CarCost Canada provides a helpful service to prospective car buyers

CarCost Canada does provide what it says it will, and in a very quick, easy to read format. That’s the good part. However, what I didn’t like were the two phone calls I received from a local auto dealer to entice me into coming to their dealership to check out the model of car I was researching. (Id already done that) Most prospective car buyers would have, or are in the process, of doing their own research , and know where their local dealers are without having to be
hassled by salesman.

I think it would be better if CarCost would provide the option for their customers to receive a call from a local dealer vs. Them passing on your contact information.
