I lost my cPanel account password. How can I recover it?
High Level:
Step by step:
cPanel password resets are performed via the cPanel login screen.
Other Information
- You can reset your own cPanel password if you have your cPanel username and can access the email account associated with your cPanel account
- cPanel usernames are usually the same as the department netid used to request the cPanel account. The email account associated with your cPanel account is generally departmentnetid@unm.edu, where departmentnetid is your department netid
Step by step:
cPanel password resets are performed via the cPanel login screen.
- Browse to https://yoursite.unm.edu/cpanel --> this will direct you to the correct cPanel login screen
- Ensure you use HTTPS (https://)
- Replace yoursite.unm.edu with your actual URL or domain
- Append /cpanel to your URL
- Click the Reset Password link on the login screen
- Enter your cPanel username in the box and click Reset Password
- On the next screen, enter the email address associated with your account (generally your department or club email address), then click Send Security Code
- The hint gives you an idea of what the email address should start and end with
- Do not close the window after clicking Send Security code
- An email message with a security code will be sent to the email address you entered only if it is actually associated with your cPanel account (this typically takes no more than 5 minutes)
- If the email address you enter does not receive a message, it is likely you are not using the correct address
- If the email address you enter does not receive a message, it is likely you are not using the correct address
- Copy/paste the code from the email message into the Security Code box and click Submit
- If the code matches, you will be prompted to enter a new password (twice) for your account. Do so, then click Set Password
- If the password reset was successful, you will see (and receive via email) a confirmation message - use the Log in to cPanel button to login to your account with the new password
Other Information
- cPanel account usernames are typically the same as their corresponding department netids, BUT PASSWORDS ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE SAME.
- NOTE: In some cases, cPanel account usernames ARE NOT the same as their corresponding netids. In these cases, the self-service password reset interface will still work, as long as:
- You use the correct cPanel username (often a truncated version of your department netid)
- Your department netid's email address (or you own) is properly specified in the cPanel account
- NOTE: In some cases, cPanel account usernames ARE NOT the same as their corresponding netids. In these cases, the self-service password reset interface will still work, as long as:
- You may need the department/club netid/password that is associated with your cPanel account - the reset process sends a new password to the dept/club netid's email account
- In some cases, the self service process may not work (example: you requested a cPanel account but did not create any Addon domains) - if you experience issues, contact the UNM IT Service Desk at 505-277-5757 (or via Help.UNM) and your password can be manually reset.
For further assistance, please submit a Help.UNM ticket or contact UNM Information Technologies Customer Support Services (IT CSS) by calling (505) 277-5757.
