What’s It About?
As its name indicates, DISNEY INFINITY: TOY BOX 3.0 is a virtual toy box filled with different characters and play sets. Kids select a character from the unlocked options and choose an adventure from many possibilities, including exploring, fighting, and creating new worlds. Each character has different moves and features, and kids can design adventures themselves, creating as they play. They can save the different toy boxes and play cooperatively with friends connected through their Disney accounts. The characters and scenes from Toy Box 1.0 and 2.0 are included here too.
Is It Any Good?
Amazing graphics and robust options for creative play come at a premium that requires device space and in-app purchases. Though it may be pricey and take up most of a tablet's storage, the game allows kids to create their own adventures, so they'll be immersed in play for an infinity (almost). The options for creative play are impressive -- characters from different stories interact -- but they're still licensed characters with their own personalities and story lines, so kids aren't totally free to be as creative as they can be in other sandbox-style play. The fight scenes are challenging, too, and some scenes are quite dark and spooky, so even though Olaf, Minnie, and Mickey are included, this is a game more fitting for Star Wars and Marvel fans. It's also possible that kids not already familiar with the Disney Infinity series will be overwhelmed with the multitude of features, but most will just jump in and figure it out. With the addition of Star Wars characters and slightly improved touchscreen mechanics, this installment has more to offer than previous versions.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about creative storytelling and how they can include preexisting characters in other kinds of play. Challenge kids to break the characters out of the story stereotypes, too, changing their names and personalities if they want.
Discuss your family's rules about in-app purchases before your kids play the game to set clear expectations.
