In 2023, there were 5,974 Floridians who died from Alzheimer’s disease, making it the 7th leading cause of death in Florida. An estimated 11.1% of adults 65 and older had Alzheimer’s disease in 2024.
Of the 128,497 persons with HIV living in Florida in 2023, 95,785 were men. Also in 2020, 58.6% of men aged 50 years and older reported that they had ever received a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. Out of the 3,536 deaths from motor vehicle crashes in 2023, 2,649 were men.
Since 2016 there has been an average of over 135,000 new cancer cases and 45,000 cancer deaths annually in Florida. Cancer was the second leading cause of death in 2023. In addition, in 2022, 8,948 people in Florida were diagnosed with melanoma, a type of a cancer found mostly on skin.
Sickle cell is an inherited blood disorder which causes red blood cells to have a crescent shape. In 2023 there were 17,716 emergency department visits and 11,451 hospitalizations from sickle cell.
Regular medical checkups are important to help identify health issues early and manage chronic conditions. In 2023, 76.5% of men in Florida reported that they had a personal doctor and 75.3% reported that they had a medical checkup in the past year. Among women, 83.1% reported that they have a person doctor and 82.3% reported that they had a medical checkup in the past year. In 2020, 44.4% of Florida men aged 50 years and older reported they received a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test in the past two years. In 2022, 34.4% of Florida women aged 18 years and older reported that they received a cervical cancer screening in the past year.
