Vitalant Blood Donation Center

Who We Are

Vitalant collects close to 40,000 units of whole blood annually. Each unit is separated into components, as many as three per donation. Thus, about 95,000 products including platelets and plasma are made available to patients each year. Vitalant supplies blood and blood products to more than 30 area hospitals, clinics, and transfusion centers in the states of Washington, Idaho, and Montana. The blood generously donated is used for people with various medical needs that result from accidents, surgery, and cancer. Vitalant proudly serves as a donor center for the National Marrow Donor Program. Every year, 16,000 individuals are diagnosed with potentially fatal diseases and on any given day, 3,000 patients are looking for their Miracle Match. Vitalant recruits potential donors from Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho, and Montana and offers several programs for typing donors at little to no fee. Vitalant has many volunteer opportunities and positions available. By joining our dedicated team of volunteers, you can help maintain a safe and adequate blood supply for patients in our community. Not only do volunteers provide direct services to blood donors, but they also play a critical role in a variety of our operations. You can participate in this important community service by working flexible hours in a pleasant environment with donors and staff.

What We Do

Vitalant saves lives by providing blood and services to support transfusion and transplantation medicine in the Inland Northwest. Vitalant first opened its doors to donors over 50 years ago. After a year of planning, it welcomed the first donors on October 1, 1945. Individuals, civic groups, companies and outlying communities rallied their support. By the end of three months, 387 units of whole blood had been collected and most had already been transfused. As word of the need for volunteer donors spread, the number of donors steadily increased, and has continued over the ensuing years. To date, over one million individuals have donated their blood for patients needs through Vitalant.
