This is a two-year program beginning July 1 of each year. Five new positions are offered each year.

Description

The two-year, clinically-oriented Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program is offered jointly by the Boston Children’s Hospital and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. During the two-year program, responsibilities in the hospital predominate. An optional third year may be spent in biomedical or in-depth clinical research with the possibility of financial support through a direct fellowship from the National Institute for Dental Research or from a training grant for specific types of research. An optional third year may be used to obtain a Master of Public Health. 

The clinical period of all trainees meets the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination. The depth of our program is unparalleled, not only in terms of sheer numbers of patients, but also the types of patients our residents treat and the types of treatment offered. It is not unusual for our residents to consult on and treat patients who have the rarest of syndromes or diagnoses. Our patients come from all over the world to be seen at Boston Children's Hospital. 

The training program provides a full range of dental experiences including preventive, restorative, endodontic, oral surgical, orthodontic and periodontic services. The patient population seeking services in the department is large and varied. Special dental services required by patients with disorders such as cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies are treated by staff and house officers. 

All interns and residents provide emergency dental services on a rotating basis. The hospital treats many dental emergencies, such as pain, infection and dento-alveolar and facial trauma. Thus, the trainee will gain ample experience in treating dental emergencies. 

Clinical experience in preventive, interceptive and corrective orthodontics is attained under the guidance of the pediatric dentistry and orthodontic staff. Each trainee is afforded the opportunity to treat a number of orthodontic cases that require full or partial banding, but emphasis is placed on diagnosis and treatment planning. 

Patient management techniques, such as behavioral modification, nitrous oxide sedation, intravenous techniques, P.O. or I.M. sedation and general anesthesia are learned through lecture, discussion and hands-on experience

Curriculum

Daily seminar topics include: dental growth and development, pediatric dental surgery, orthodontics, behavioral management, preventive dentistry, pediatric medical disorders, restorative dentistry, endodontic therapy, practice management, pain control, traumatology and emergency medical care. The pediatric dentistry literature is reviewed in seminars, and current literature is discussed. An extensive range of research opportunities exists within the hospital and the Harvard medical and dental community. All trainees are required to participate in research and will have a research mentor. All second-year residents are required to present their research at the annual AAPD meeting. The expenses for this meeting will be covered by the program.

A one-month rotation in general anesthesia is provided for all trainees by the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. During this time, the trainee learns the physiology and pharmacology of anesthetic agents, as well as techniques involved in intubation. The rotation includes active participation in general anesthesia.

An additional four-week rotation is provided in pediatric medicine. (Developmental Medicine, General Pediatrics, Oncology and the Boston Children's Hospital Primary Care Clinic. During this time, the trainee learns to perform physical examinations and cares for various medical entities treated in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First year program stipend is $75,679. Second year program stipend is $78,728. Harvard School of Dental Medicine requires a nominal tuition fee as well as a basic medical insurance fee on a yearly basis (approximately $3000).

There is a $10,000 taxable stipend for housing and cost of living which will be distributed annually for the duration of your ACGME approved residency. 

Boston Children's Hospital pays for medical malpractice insurance and offers three weeks paid vacation per year plus holidays.

All applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission: 

• D.D.S., D.M.D. or non-U.S. equivalent 
• CV
• 2x2 photo
• Original NBDE (Part I and II) or Original INBDE scores

International Students

• International students are required to take the TOEFL exam if their native language is not English. 
• The TOEFL scores must be from a test taken within the past two years.
• The TOEFL exam can only be waived if both the bachelor’s degree and dental degree were obtained in the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, or the United Kingdom. 
• The minimum acceptable overall score is 95, with subcategory score minimums of Reading 21, Listening 17, Speaking 24, and Writing 25.
