Hartley Academic Resource Center (HARC)

The Hartley Academic Resource Center (HARC) is a joint endeavor between Student Success and Academic Engagement and Athletics. The mission of the Center is to promote the academic success of our student-athlete population by providing programs and services that assist students in becoming skilled, independent learners who achieve their academic goals.

Attached to Alico Arena, the HARC provides wireless access, study hall, group and individual tutoring, computer lab, monitored academic plans, laptop check-out, degree evaluations, assignment printing, class registration and eligibility assessments.

Although the services rendered at the HARC are focused on the individual needs of student-athletes, our philosophy on academic support is to incorporate all campus resources available to all students into the study schedules of our student-athletes. The student-athletes are able to utilize the university Writing Center, Supplemental Instruction and Math/Science Walk-In Lab to assist them in academic success.

Achieving excellence from our student-athletes both in and out of the classroom has always been the goal of the Athletics Department and partnering with campus creates a unique relationship to achieve this goal. Included in FGCU Athletics' annual goals are to witness the collective student-athlete population equaling or exceeding the University's general undergraduate population's overall semester and cumulative grade point averages and graduation rate.

History of the HARC
The extreme generosity of Mike and Karen Hartley made the construction of the HARC possible with their $1 million donation in 2016. The gift was the third seven-figure donation as part of the Department of Athletics’ $12 million capital campaign and allowed for construction to commence.

"We are elated to be in a position to contribute toward FGCU's expansion,” the Hartley’s said. “FGCU's academic and athletics achievements, as well as its quality student-athletes, are a huge asset for Southwest Florida. We have supported individual athletics scholarships for a few years, and we find the opportunity to share some of our successes with this historical project personally rewarding. The Hartley Academic Resource Center will offer expanded learning opportunities to all student-athletes at this first-class institution of higher learning, and we're excited and proud to be able to support it."

The Hartley’s have been active members of the Eagles Scholarship Society – the highest annual giving designation for FGCU Athletics – and basketball season ticket holders since 2014. The couple have been supporters and boosters of FGCU Athletics and very active volunteers for Night at the Nest, the department's largest and most successful annual fundraising gala.

"We are extremely blessed to be the beneficiaries of Mike and Karen's tremendous kindness," FGCU Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh said. "Through this magnanimous gift, we are afforded invaluable resources to greatly assist our capabilities to further support the academic pursuits of our current and future student-athletes, as we seek to provide much-needed enhanced facilities to place us on par with the awesome overall accomplishments that our teams have been collectively producing."

The Hartley Academic Resource Center, which opened in 2017, is on the first floor of the Alico expansion on the building's front side, closest to Swanson Stadium. It includes offices for the Student-Athlete Learning Center's staff, work spaces for group projects, numerous computers lining the glass exterior, seven private tutoring areas and living, study and conference rooms.

Previously, Dean and Janie Schreiner committed $1 million toward the expansion of Alico's sports medicine area, which became the Schreiner Family Sports Medicine Center and also opened in 2017. Jim and Donna Sublett also earmarked $1 million for a strength and conditioning facility exclusively for FGCU student-athletes that opened in 2020.

Priority Registration
Each student-athlete is afforded the opportunity to register earlier than the general student body. Student-athletes are faced with practice and travel conflicts, and it is the Department of Athletics goal to limit the amount of classes each student-athlete misses per semester. Priority registration affords student-athletes the opportunity to plan ahead for the upcoming semester and schedule their classes around impending conflicts.

Travel Letters
Each student-athlete is given a travel letter at the beginning of each semester to give to their professor(s). Although priority registration does assist us in narrowing down travel conflicts with classes, conflicts may still occur. Travel letters are given to the professors discussing the student-athletes obligations to their team as well as to their course. Travel letters do not excuse the student-athlete from the course work, but allows for the potential to make appropriate accommodations with the professor.

Travel Laptops
The Department of Athletics offers student-athletes the opportunity to check out and utilize university laptops while traveling. Wireless and Ethernet capable laptops are able to log into the university system granting student-athletes the opportunity to access university programs. If interested in using a laptop for travel, please ask your head coach to reserve a laptop on your behalf.

Learning Disability/At-Risk Student-Athletes
Our Academic Support Program focuses on the success of all their student-athletes, no matter the challenges and difficulties each student-athlete faces. Student-athletes that are diagnosed with learning disabilities work closely with both the Academic Coordinator and Adaptive Services to make sure that their needs/accommodations are being met. In addition to accommodations, these student-athletes work closely with the Academic Coordinator to receive assistance with time management/study skills, developing individual academic plans and mandatory tutoring. In situations of remedial needs, the Academic Coordinator works closely with First Year Advising to remediate the student-athlete.
