Yhanks for the reply, we had a phone call early this morning - it was an automated service. The voice wanted to speak to our son, who is abroad at the moment. They said they had an urgent message for him. He does not have an account at Barclays, only a Goldfish card, so we wonder if the call was genuine.

Just a thought - has he taken his credit card abroad with him? if so did he tell Goldfish before he went? when I last went abroad a couple of years ago I was asked in advance to advise my credit card provider of my trip in order than 'out of area and uncommon transactions' would not cause the card to be blocked as a security/anti theft/fraud prevention measure.

Thanks, he has lived in Canada for five years now, but was here a couple of weeks ago. We will ring him later- I don't think he would appreciate a call at the moment!

Many thanks for the replies, will ring our son later. I am sure that nothing "urgent" would be on an automated message, asking you to press numbers on the keypad to answer questions.

Barclays bought out Goldfish about a year ago.

Barclays do make phone calls if they suspect fraudulent use - I had a call last year about an unusual transaction made through intenet banking from my current account. It was actually ok. However you have to be very careful and if in doubt never provide any information, especially to automated messages. If in doubt call back using the number on the banks official website, or visit the nearest branch.

If you do use your card abroad without first telling the bank, they could well put a block on the card. Same applies if you want to use if for a large or unusual transaction, out of line with the ones you usually make.

OH has just spoken to Barclays, and they say the number our son was asked to ring is genuine. It could be that he was here during August, and used his card whilst over here. Will ring him tonight in Canada.
Thanks for the replies,
Liz

Many thanks for the replies, our son used his Goldfish Card here, and a few days later, back in Canada, used it there. They wanted to check it had not been stolen.
