LEGO launches new VIP Program

Posted by ,

LEGO has today launched the updated VIP program, introducing numerous new benefits and methods to earn points beyond purchases. These rewards may now be accessed through a dedicated Rewards Centre.

In addition, the comparative value of VIP points has been updated for different currencies. They are accordingly worth roughly the same amount anywhere in the world. You can view their adjusted value, along with further information about the available rewards, after the break...

VIP Point values:

Currencies such as Pound Sterling or American Dollars have historically been worth one VIP point each, entailing slight differences in their respective value. This has now been updated so VIP points have closer parity around the world, based upon the Danish Krone:

  • £1 = 8 points
  • €1 = 7.5 points
  • US $1 = 6.5 points
  • CAD $1 = 5 points
  • AU $1 = 4.5 points
  • NZ $1 = 4 points
  • 1 DKK = 1 point
  • 1 PLN = 1.5 points

However, the required spend to redeem vouchers remains unchanged. For example, purchases in the UK will earn the following reward:

  • £100 spend = 800 points = £5 reward

Other Rewards:

In addition to earning vouchers, a selection of other rewards are now available. These include posters and historic gifts-with-purchase. The most interesting example is perhaps 5004590 Bat-Pod which was available for 15,000 points, although it has now sold out.

There appears to be some variation between which rewards are available around the world so I recommend taking a look at the Rewards Centre in your own country.

Earning VIP Points:

VIP points have previously been earned through making purchases from shop.LEGO.com and in LEGO stores. However, you can now earn points by responding to short surveys or viewing LEGO's social media pages. Additional methods of earning points will presumably follow.

You can find a helpful FAQ for the new program here.

Are you pleased with the updated VIP program and what rewards would you find most interesting in the future? Let us know in the comments.

By in United States,

I just logged in to check it out and my account is zeroed out... I had over $170 in rewards banked...

LEGO is getting a phone call real quick... anybody else see this?

UPDATE: After being on the phone with them they said that about 6,500 accounts have had issues with points not transferring over and that I should wait about a week until everything migrates over and then check back in then.

Not a good look... hope they figure this out...

Soooooo....how many surveys do I need to take to get the UCS Falcon?

By in United States,

This is clearly not ready for prime time yet. I'm logged into my account, but the Rewards Center doesn't see me as logged in. My points are gone, and so's my wish list. I'm sure these will get fixed, but jeez, Lego. Internet is not that hard. Not sure why you have so much trouble with it.

By in Canada,

Well, looks like the new system converts the old points into equivalent cash value. So your points are still "worth" the same. Yesterday I had about $300 worth of points, today I have about 30,000 points that I can redeem for 3x $100 gift cards. Same same.

By in Finland,

Sounds interesting, was hoping the voucher percentage would rise a little bit, though... Still, cannot get to the Rewards Centre ("We tried to sign you in, but the email is not recognised." and according to my LEGO.com account I'm not even a VIP member at the moment.

A message to our valued VIP customers

We are currently in the process of upgrading our VIP Program to give our fans more benefits and more rewards.

To do this, we need to move to a new online Rewards Centre in order to provide you with more opportunities to earn and redeem LEGO VIP points.

This involved migrating all of our existing LEGO VIP Rewards accounts from our old platform to the new centre. We have millions of accounts, and unfortunately during this process not all VIP points information was successfully migrated. As a result, some VIP accounts are not showing the correct points balance.

Please don’t worry. No one has lost points. We have a backup of all points information, and are in the process of fixing the issue. It will probably take a day or two, but we will make sure everyone’s account is showing the correct points balance.

We apologise for any inconvenience and also want to reassure you that no personal data has been impacted by this migration, only VIP points data.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to our awesome consumer service team. https://www.lego.com/en-us/service

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We’re working as fast as we can to fix this!

By in United States,

I'm just interested in the Bat-Pod re-release for the new VIP promos... unfortunately its sold out :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

Appears that rewards cannot be immediately redeemed at Lego store, rather, a voucher must be claimed online and then you have to wait for a redemption email. Once email is received you can proceed to the store with your "rewards voucher." And........the vouchers expire after 30 days which results in rewards being lost forever.

By in Germany,

Hey folks, using adblocker on the VIP site kills it off. At least here in Germany. And in other news: the Batpod for 15.000 points is already gone from the german VIP site. Yeah, let's get a coloring sheet instead. Well done, Lego. :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

So, getting a voucher, does that mean I can’t use my ViP dollars when I walk into a store & buy something like before? I have to request this voucher, which I assume is emailed to me?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

How many VIP points do I need now to have access to a Shop @ Home online experience that actually works?

Gravatar
By in United States,

A few weeks ago one of the LEGO store employees showed me the handout that staff received on the new program. The one aspect that did not appeal to me is that there will no longer be any point-of-sale redemption. VIPs will need to redeem points in advance on-line for some sort of voucher or certificate to use in the store. On top of that, there was some limitation on splitting a certificate among multiple purchases, but the extent of what that meant was unclear. I took it as a means of limiting GWP awards with on certificate.

This all doesn’t matter too much to me because my closest LEGO store is over 100 miles away, so I do most purchases on the web, but it will impact impulse purchases by some.

Upon learning this, I redeemed most of my available points that day for the UCS Millennium Falcon, which I wouldn’t want to risk suffering regular shipping from LEGO.com.

I do like very much the idea of special purchases and new ways to earn points.

By in United Kingdom,

For all the guff that LEGO are peddling, they’ve simply overhauled the programme to better benefit themselves rather than the customer. One of the smallest benefits I enjoyed was having pooled points with my wife’s account. She always forgot to use them so any points she accrued I got to spend on my account. LEGO have binned merged accounts with this ‘upgrade’

Gravatar
By in United States,

Anyone know if you can apply multiple $5 vouchers to the same order? Otherwise, this is a downgrade since they are restricting the reward increments offered. Yesterday, I could have received a $45 discount on my order. Today, I'm capped at $20 unless I spend more money first.

Also, it is just silly that they expect someone to spend their points to "download" anything.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Initial thoughts.

Seems like to get the VIP promo item, you have to buy something from the shop and then redeem a voucher code which you get when you redeem your points?? Within 30 days or the code will expire.

I usually spend my points in the Xmas sale. But now would have to break away from the sale site to go to redeem points if there's something I want in the sale, by which time it's probably sold out. Can't redeem in advance due to the 30 day expiration.

I see the benefit of the points realignment, the opportunity to get rewards and new ways to earn points, but why not just let points be redeemed at point of sale in store and online as before.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Because they want to make it harder for you to use them!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well another slightly worrying Lego change. Like many I seemed to have lost my points, but after registering for something I was already registered for I do seem to have the Equivalent of the £10 of vouchers I had yesterday. Not sure how quick it is to redeem, rather than simply ticking a box at checkout....... but if more options are available it may be better. My experience tonight is that I have lost all of my Wanted.... which is a bit annoying. Do they ever test these changes? Will see if it improves tomorrow.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As for realignment of points value, when the pound was a lot stronger than the dollar I used to buy from the US store and have deliveries shipped to my sister in California. For 100 GBP I was getting almost 200 points on the US store and those 200 points were redeemable in the UK for £10 off UK orders not £5 so I suspect Lego we’re getting scalped due to conversion rates.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My understanding of the new point vouchers is as follows:

You redeem the points online for a voucher worth $5, $20, $50, or $100.

Multiple vouchers can be redeemed during any purchase. (I.e. stacking multiple $100 vouchers or stacking a $20 voucher with a $50 voucher)

If you go online and redeem a voucher for $50 and use it on a $45 purchase, the final $5 dollars are forfeit. So make sure you have your purchase planned out and ready before redeeming the vouchers.

If you see a set you want and it’s $89.99, DON’T redeem your $100 voucher unless your ready to lose $10 in VIP points. You instead will want to do one $50 and two $20.

Hope this makes sense.

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

Sorry TLG, but I don't beta test software unless I get paid for it. And this isn't even in beta, judging from what I've seen.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^^ So in the past you took advantage of a 'loophole' and I've done the same. But that scenario only benefits people buying in the US and redeeming in the UK - I'm guessing not a large percentage of customers. So this change does even things out for now.

These days many sets are cheaper in the UK than the US anyway (as I found out when researching for a recent trip), despite the poor exchange rate. I think random price differences across different countries are more of an issue.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So I lost 60$ worth of points to enter....I see how it is

Gravatar
By in United States,

So it still amounts to the usual 5% off--10% if it's double points (which is the only time I'll buy). Better than nothin' I suppose--I'll be interested to see what other ways we can earn points, the usual way is rather lackluster.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This all sounds quite frustrating. Having to print out a voucher and essentially being forced to use it in 30 days is definitely not consumer friendly. Especially not when the previous program was so easy. Simply use your points at time of purchase with a simple drop down menu that showed how many you had. I'm less and less likely to actually buy from them directly. Especially when I can get a sale from other retailers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Odd change but I think it's a good idea and could become something special. I don't like having to redeem vouchers and use them since I don't really plan ahead on when to use my points, but being able to buy old promos is awesome! It's disappointing that the Batpod sold out so quickly but 15,000 points is over $100 and I BrickLinked my own earlier this year so I probably wouldn't have jumped on it anyway.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You had to have spent £1875 in order to get the Batpod in the first place... er yeah that’s probably not going to happen.

However, i do like the new system and the idea of earning points without making purchases is perfect if you live nowhere near a store like me!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I used to get excited about my rewards points and let them add up to $100 or so before I spent them, but a 20%+ discount on Amazon puts the 5% VIP reward to shame. Still waiting on those Millennium Falcon VIP card special offers...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I agree monkyby87, I have no reason to buy from the Lego store now! Ill just get it on sale somewhere else. Is a 5% discount equivalent too much for our loyalty? I wont plan ahead and print or write down a voucher code before heading to the mall, guaranteed ill forget. Maybe they find their stores are too busy? I don't get the logic.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Besides my wishlist completely disappearing (thankfully my OCD has a full spreedsheet of all Lego things in my life including an updated wishlist lol!), connecting to the VIP when buying is a lot more complicated. Now I have to apply for to redeem points, wait a few days before getting a code, then use that code when buying, by which time whatever I wanted on promo will have sold out lol. Looks like ordering by phone instead of online will be easier and quicker! Otherwise love that you can use your VIP points for something other then discount on purchases (though so far in Aust we only seem to have some posters and downloadable colouring pics).

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Well it should be fun now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So far not impressed. I tried logging in and all the page does is refresh to the login page. So I can’t see my points or access awards. This may make me shop elsewhere (Target or Walmart), since they often times have sets cheaper. I can easily save an instant $5-10 on most sets instead of trying to collect reward points, and remembering to print out a voucher. I don’t know who they think they are listening too but it isn’t me. I liked the old way better.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Sadly the only thing worth anything is already sold out. Would be nice to have more actual LEGO build rewards instead of all this paper stuff. Sure its great for the kids I guess. As an adult consumer though I would rather be rewarded with a unique LEGO build.

Missed the mark LEGO don't think this is much of an improvement.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is dumb, all the way around. It is not user/fan friendly, and only benefits Lego and their bottom line through lost/voided/unredeemed points. This isn't better customer service. This isn't increasing incentives or appreciation of the consumer. If Lego isn't careful, they will be suffering again like they were in the late 90's, when they forgot their roots and loyal fan base.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

My favourite quote from the LEGO VIP FAQS page: "For example, if the LEGO item is $XX.XX, you are earning YY.YY points, but it will appear as if you have only earned ZZ."

Gravatar
By in United States,

So, the new site worked for me but, it seems that if I want the 3rd Marvel print I have to redeem my points and place an order. The first two were GWP I apparently bought to get enough points for this one? Dumb.

Some of what was said about the new vip system sounds good but what
Is with us not being allowed to use our points in the stores namely the store in beachwood, Ohio. My brother had 5.00 in his pocket and told my
Nephew he could get something for 15.00 because he had enough points but they would not let him use them. So sale lost
Upset child upset parent and I don't like that idea either
Are you trying to put the stores out and only sell on line.
I'm going to call to!

Can't load the VIP Rewards page in either Chrome or Firefox. Even when all Ad Blockers/Tracker Blocks are disabled. It does seem to work with Microsoft Edge Browser. I hope Lego fixes this as I don't use Edge.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know system migrations can have issues but this is just another reminder of the Lego website’s ongoing quality issues. Sorting is a mess and they still can’t get images right on mobile. Brickset however works great on a phone!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just checked in to see if my points tranfered and they did. So that’s good however as I was browsing the “rewards center” the site crashed and wouldn’t let me back in! Oh well I’m sure they will iron out bugs but I’m not really sure what was wrong with the old system.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Why would anyone be interested in VIP-points at all? The prices in Lego's own shops are so extremely high that eve triple Vip points don't add up to buying for instance at Aamazon.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So now we have to redeem in advance to use our VIP. What a pain in the @ss. The fact that it can't be used in stores without redeeming first in advance makes planning my trip to the lego store a lot harder. I love Lego but I see more problems with this new VIP. I'm more better off only using VIP points online, but I feel when new sets come out right away, it wouldn't be worth redeeming in hopes that is doesnt sell out. Otherwise I can't use points on brand new releases right away.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

same here lost points for now. would travel to Lego Store about 150 miles round trip for a big spend making several purchases using points as i went along, No longer it seems.
Why do all these big company's want to make live hard, Profit seems to be the answer . Used to think Lego was better than the others with a good customer service suppose that will be changed to a robot system next.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

To cite a previous question: "Why the negativity?" ;-)

Irony aside, even with TLG's history of messing up just about everything when it comes to launches of new stuff, this VIP system relaunch appears to be the most fu**ed up one of them all.

And what a downgrade for exisiting users. Up until now I could simply redeem the value of my points at any time either in our local LEGO store, in any LEGO store around the world, or at LEGO.com.
Now I am restricted to getting some voucher first, which incidentally over here isn't even working, as all vouchers are shown as "Sold out" (WTF?), plus those vouchers are then only valid for 30 days.
I have already written a very angry mail to customer service, as this is the way to go to lose customers. What a sh*tty new system. No reason imho to use it any longer. If that is what they tried to achieve, congratulations, they have succeeded. :-(
I mean, let's be honest. No one in their right mind would buy anything directly from LEGO when the same sets can be had with discounts anywhere else if it were not for the VIP points and stuff like GWPs. Now with this new system, even the last reason to buy directly from LEGO has turned sour. Really, way to go TLG!

If I had known what was to come, I would have simply redeemed all my points beforehand and then just stopped using the programme in future. It's not as if it had been too attractive anyway, but now it has just become a pure annoyance. Oh and yeah, way to go, show an offer of an attractive reward like the Bat-pod but with the status "Sold-out" from the get go. Just like the "Year of the pig" offer a couple of weeks ago, that was added to the cart but immediately removed again once you tried to check out. No matter how often you tried over the course of the first day of the offer, always the same procedure. Added to the cart, removed at check-out.

In all honesty, TLG is becoming ever more hated over here.
Ever increasing prices, lower quality (just look at those new "trans-clear" pieces that look worse than knock-offs, or the new "white" which looks like it has already yellowed for several years, to name but two issues), plus their pestering the German customs so that everything brick-related is confiscated, even those Bricklink AFOL designer program sets. Genius!

And now their latest coup, trying to use the Ambassador network to help in their fight against Xingbao minifigures (even though those are completely legal), has also not gone down well. I mean, I know they feel the pressure starting to build, because people notice that LEGO is not worth their asking prices anymore while at the same time loads of great alternatives are coming to market (like Cobi, Xingbao, etc.), but that should rather encourage them to get better at their own game again than trying to suppress legitimate competition and causing customers of legal alternatives undeserved trouble.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I suggest a bombardment of submissions to Customer Service complaining about inability to redeem points in-store for purchases.
Emphasising that:
We weren’t consulted on this change.
If visiting stores, on impulse, to make purchases with points redemption, is now discouraged by their actions, so too is visiting on impulse to spend money to earn points... and as their approach encourages online shopping, and less impulse, we’re more likely to choose Amazon (with its discounts), and less likely to a) use lego.com and b) less likely to visit their stores... which will result in store closures, job losses, and less income for Lego.
Also worth asking if lego really values its AFOLs - we do not want to redeem points for colouring in pictures! The AFOL community has the spending power, and would like a points system that respects that!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Well, that worked as expected for me. A complete mess mixed with no communication at all. There was no mailing in advance and now (one day later) still no information from TLG, beside the customer service responses.
Shop integration is gone, so you don't see your points in your customer profile and you can't redeem them in the checkout process. The new scheme is complicated and forces you to buy things when redeeming your vouchers (key chain by example) within a specified timeframe. No more going to a store and reducing your bill on the fly, now you need a voucher that is only valid for 30 days, so you have to plan your purchase in advance.
From the perspective of TLG they did everything right: The sole use of such a program is to bind customers and to increase sales. Check! for that.
On the other side, there are some cool rewards. I hope this will outweigh all the other inconveniences...

Gravatar
By in France,

The only inconvenience that I can see is that there is no direct access to VIP accumulatd points from within LEGO.com... I haven't experienced problems with the new rewards site... I reregistered my email address and had access to my historical data.

The new system will bed in once GFOLs (Grumpy Followers Of Lego) become familiar with its overall functionality.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I think just for fun I should visit our local LEGO store today and tell them that I will never purchase from them again and that they can thank TLG HQ and their idiotic new version of the "VIP" rewards program for it. Will be interesting to see their reaction.
Otoh, their staff changes so often nowadays that I don't feel any connection to them anymore anyway. In the olden days I knew the people there and they knew me. Was a nice feeling, almost like family, and made purchasing stuff there more enjoyable than in other places. Now they are just like all the others and the special feeling is gone. Another score for TLG...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

They are literally giving away stuff for free, yet people still complain. Granted it's slightly less convenient to redeem in store, but it's hardly reason to never shop there again. Most folk have a smartphone these days, so just go online and redeem there and then while in the store.

The subset of customers that visit a store on a whim, have no idea in advance how much they are likely to spend, have no idea how many VIP points they've got and don't have a phone they can access in store is likely to be a pretty small percentage.

These loyalty type schemes do tend to get less generous over time in general anyway, but the value of VIP points is still the same and they've even added other ways to earn extra points with surveys etc and given the option to spend points on other things too. Nobody is forcing anyone to spend points on colouring sheets, but the option is now there if you want it.

Gravatar

By in Netherlands,

I logged in to the LEGO Web shop in my default Google Chrome without issue, but my VIP account was not connected and my saved Wish List was empty. Tried to reconnect my VIP account but it failed repeatedly, even after white-listing the LEGO shop in my Ghostery ad-blocker.

To make sure it wasn't a problem with Google Chrome I also logged into my LEGO account on Microsoft Edge. There I was able to connect with my VIP account and found my previously saved VIP points still waiting for me.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I can get to my account profile, I can see my past orders, but my Wishlist is empty, searches for products return errors and I can't even access the VIP bit, let alone see whether they've misplaced my points. Oh dear ... their Web Pixies have failed again.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@dmcc0: "They are literally giving away stuff for free, yet people still complain."

They are not giving away anything for free! You have to buy from them in order to get VIP points (which you then can use to pay for the "free" items), and as they usually sell at RRP you pay through the nose for those points.

If a buy a 100 Dollar/Euro/Pound RRP set, even with double VIP points, versus the same set at Amazon etc. for say 25% off, you have already paid about 15 Dollar/Euro/Pound extra for your points. Same principle holds true for GWPs. Like when I bought the Avengers Ultimate Quinjet in order to get the "free" Avengers tower. I paid 79.99 Euro for the jet, which would have cost me 55.99 Euro at the same time at various online retailers like Amazon et al. In other words I paid 24 Euro for the "free" Avengers tower. So much for that.

And re:
"The subset of customers that visit a store on a whim, have no idea in advance how much they are likely to spend, have no idea how many VIP points they've got and don't have a phone they can access in store is likely to be a pretty small percentage."

From my experience almost all customers at our LEGO store fall into the category you describe as being a "small percentage" (other than the "not having a phone" bit obviously).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Anyone else cynical enough to think that the Batpod was a carrot dangled on a string to get those with loads of points to use them up quickly to clear the slate for the new program? ;-)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@mr_skinny: normally I would agree, but as the system apparantly didn't work correctly for most people in the early hours when this set would have been available, I somehow doubt it.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

There seems to be a rather nasty typo (at least I hope it is) for the Polish currency. 1 'zl' (although it should be PLN since that is the official code) is worth around 1.75 DKK we should be getting the ratio 1 zl = 1.5 points. 10 zl is worth a little less than 2 GBP, so 15 points for that seems accurate.

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

@mr_skinny I've commented the exact same thing. I do believe that.
I had no problem with the points migration and could have used them for the Bat-pod, but since I wouldn't pay 100€ for it I didn't use 100€ worth of points either.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

On the positive side, although I no longer appear to have any points, I can no longer see my lifetime point accumulation, so I no longer know how much money I have squandered on Lego... well, at the Lego store at any rate.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

@CCC I‘m happy the Bat Pod sold out that fast. As a winner of the original contest i don‘t appreciate that it is now a giveaway for points as that may hurt the value a lot. I kept mine sealed to be my 401k :-)

As for the VIP changes, we‘ll see. If redeeming a voucher is fast enough to handle mobile when in store, fine. If not, it‘ll hurt impulse buys in stores.
And using it for former GWPs you missed might be a good thing.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@FoolECK - I believe LEGO has updated their value since last night and the article has been adjusted accordingly. 1 PLN is indeed worth 1.5 points.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@AustinPowers Are there some (most) things you can get cheaper elsewhere? Of course.
Do they add a GWP to entice you to buy something from them that you can maybe get cheaper somewhere else? Absolutely.
Could you have bought the Quinjet from Amazon and picked up the Avengers Tower in the aftermarket for the same price you paid from LEGO? Probably, but you wouldn't have got the VIP points

If you choose to buy the same set from somewhere (whatever the price), or from LEGO without being a VIP, you get no points. So the points are free.

"From my experience almost all customers at our LEGO store fall into the category you describe as being a "small percentage" (other than the "not having a phone" bit obviously)."

You made a point of asking every customer? I stand corrected then :)

Your experience may just be different in other stores. Last time I was in store, the vast majority were kids. I doubt they were all VIPs that went in on a whim and didn't know how many points they had. Granted, some of them might've been a bit young to have smartphones though ;)

My point still stands; the % of people that specific group would be pretty small if you consider all the conditions I mentioned (including a pretty big one you chose to ignore).

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@dmcc0: are you really trying to tell me you go to your LEGO store knowing your VIP balance and having a certain plan what to buy and therefor you know what you are going to spend? That's quite some planning. I never have met anyone who did that. When using an online store to buy something, sure, you go there explicitly to buy a certain thing or set. But shopping in B @M stores people appear to be browsing and impulse-buying far more than going in there with a plan. Believe me, I visit our LEGO store frequently and I am very observant what other customers do and how they go about their purchases. I therefor don't need to explicitly ask them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego creates a rewards center that gives you more options for earning, more options for spending, an exchange value that favors all customers worldwide, and exclusive buying opportunities. Fans...complain about point system and how they can buy cheaper sets on sale elsewhere(always been this way), complain about the redemption process because it MIGHT inhibit their ability to make impulse buys because emails notoriously take days to come through in 2019, complain that the accessible rewards that were never accessible before are garbage, complain about a new website that's been in use for all of a day and being promptly dealt with, threaten to never buy LEGO through TLG again (oooo they hate when you buy their product from another store...seriously wtf?). This thread is so reactionary and over the top. Take a deep breath and realize everything will be okay, this isn't the end of the world.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Oregondete81, you're kind of missing the point. One of the ONLY reasons people shop directly through Lego is because of the VIP program and the financial benefit. It was extremely easy to use. And as others have said, it was a big reason people went to an actual Lego store as opposed to some other retailer. Now, with the way the redemption process goes, it's much more frustrating to use. I've always been able to find sets cheaper at other stores, but being able to use points on the fly kept me shopping directly through Lego. Now though, I may not worry about buying from Lego since it's not as easy to use. Of course Lego is still getting my money, but I guarantee you they'd rather have you buy something directly through them than through some other retailer. It's a bigger deal to a lot of VIP members than you realize. The additional ways to earn points is fine and all, but the real benefit is harder to use. As for the others ways to spend, let's be honest; nobody cares about those. People want to use their points to get money off on sets. That's harder to do now.

Of course this thread is reactionary...we're reacting to a rather significant change that affects quite a lot of loyal VIP members. We've been through this song and dance before; it's ok to express our opinions on something that legitimately affects our lives. This isn't just another "I don't like this set even though I would never have bought it anyways".

By in United States,

This new system is much worse than the old. It's more time-consuming, more confusing, and has fewer options to use your points. The old system of rewards was fine and this new system is convoluted and introduces fewer options of using points to get a discount. The additional physical rewards are welcome, but l would not have traded the old system just for those. Why couldn't LEGO combine the good parts of both systems?

And you know what's more annoying than legitimate complaints? People complaining about complainers.

I do not like it. So now we are going to pay for prints. It is harder to redeem points. Points expire. All bad deals in my opinion.

By in United Kingdom,

@AustinPowers: I'm not lucky enough to have one near where I live (approx 6hr round trip) so I don't go that often. But I do make a point of going if I happen to be nearby. As it's not a regular thing and I haven't got a huge LEGO budget I do tend to know what I'm going in for and would likely check my points balance before I go. Given the frequency of my visits i usually just spend points each time so they don't expire so usually <£10 worth. The majority of the time its to buy an exclusive and I usually browse the PaB wall and maybe fill a couple of cups (of parts that I'll probably never use), but I certainly don't go in just to browse and buy whatever takes my fancy.

I was actually in my "local" store the other week and had planned to get the Knightmare Batman minifig pack and a couple of PaB cups, but ended up just getting the minifigs as there was nothing interesting on the wall. I spent a fair bit of time in the store browsing, saw some things I liked, but didn't even enter my mind to buy them there and then because they were all full price.

I'm aware that I can generally get stuff far cheaper elsewhere, so doesn't make any sense to me to buy general release stuff on impulse. I generally don't build something as soon as I buy it either so getting a good price on something is more important to me than having it in hand now, so I'm usually willing to wait for a decent discount; something you generally don't get in a LEGO store.

I guess your experience may be typical of an AFOL who lives close enough to a LEGO store to visit regularly, but don't be mistaken in thinking that it's typical for everyone when it's clearly not.

"Believe me, I visit our LEGO store frequently and I am very observant what other customers do and how they go about their purchases. I therefor don't need to explicitly ask them."

You read their minds instead? ;)

By in Norway,

So how does this work if I'm going to spend my points on SaH to get discounts? Do I really first have to request a "voucher", wait several days for a code to arrive by e-mail, before I can use it when placing my order?

I tried checking the linked FAQ, clicked "How do I redeem my points" and started reading - but then the page refreshes to a Norwegian site, I click the FAQ again, but now suddenly none of the questions expands to show the answer. In my other browser the page doesn't show at all, it's just blank.

Seriously, the Lego website has became utter garbage since they "updated" it a few years ago. Earlier I used to visit it regularly to see what's new, read reviews etc, but now it's so horribly slow and painful to use that I *only* visit it to actually order something. This has been a general problem with websites the last decade, they gets "updated" only to get slow and/or stop working without any tangible improvements, but the Lego site is still exceptionally bad.

By in United States,

Where the heck was the warning? The last email I got was "Buy now to get double VIP points". What good is shopping through a rewards program that fails to keep good faith with the customer? I had $70 in my VIP that I was planning to use for my daughter's birthday after she has a major surgery next week, now we simply can't afford the set she wanted. I'm pissed.

And NO I do not, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT, want a signed artwork instead.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

When I log in to my Lego.com account, it prompts me to join the sign in or join the VIP even though I'm already a member and I'm logged in. It doesn't seem joined up with their Shop site.

Anyway, choice of rewards is nice but requesting the discount in advance is a bit of a pain, round numbers isn't great either - usually I save up my points all year then redeem whatever I have in one go.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is absolutely terrible. I work like 10 mins from a Lego store. Now there's no point in me going there for an impulse purchase if using points is harder. I might as well order it off Amazon whilst on the train home, just wait a day or 2 and save money.

I wonder how many people didn't know about this and have already walked out a store empty handed and left that store with lower sales figures they'll have to explain. I've already seen some in this thread, and I also never received an email about this change. It's lucky this article was recommended to me else I never would have known and I'd be one of the ones leaving with nothing.

Also the new site for it is terrible. I created my Lego account years ago in the UK but I moved to the US in 2017 and everything worked just fine - continued to use the same VIP card I've always had and the points were now just worth $ instead of £. Now on the website, all the redemptions are showing £ for me. I don't know if I can trust that. If I redeem some points, can they be used in a store here? Last I checked, the pound was not accepted in California. I then tried to change my account's country again. It was already saying US, but I tried to change it anyway. It asked for my password and the UI for that was terrible - the "verify" button didn't seem to actually do anything, instead I had to click this tiny padlock in the text box? Anyway I got past that, and now I find that half the redemption options are missing! In store redemptions are refusing to load now. So is that it? Have I basically just blocked myself from Lego stores?

Gravatar

Lego really does stink at this side of their business. I'll just limit my future direct buys from them to "exclusives".

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I feel like Lego have gone a step back in terms of innovation and technology. The old system was so much easier to use. Now its like a survey site. I use survey sites, their vouchers take days to arrive, some are instant, but don't expire for at least a decade. If the vouchers are sold out, they can take ages to arrive, if you're able to order them at all.

I'm not interested in any of the posters and stuff that you can redeem them on. I used the points only for online purchases of lego, as my closest store is over two hours away.

I'll have to wait and see how long you have to wait for vouchers when I decide to buy some sets again, probably when the new modular comes out, to properly judge this change. But I do not think it is a good change at all.

Edit: I just had to update my wishlist again. I did it this morning when I found out about this because it was wiped, just logged in to the shop now and it was gone again. This is going to be a pain if you have to do this every time you visit the site.

It was working in Firefox this morning, now its not. I had to use Edge.

Nothing working for me. Can't see my VIP points balance anymore and can't log into rewards center even though I am logged into shop.Lego. Just get redirected to VIP landing page. Tried logging out and in again from shop.Lego tried signing up for VIP again. Nothing good happening here... Hopefully this is fixed soon. But now starting to worry that my points are gone.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I just ordered the Empire State Building from Amazon at 29% off, just a few weeks after release. This VIP system is ... not particularly attractive if you have any alternative.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Hmpf, brickset is acting up more than the LEGO VIP site for me, one carefully crafted post vanished without a trace.

Anyway, logged in, saw my points, so no issues for me.

Guessed as much when I received the mail announcing the new VIP program a few weeks ago - usually these days it means it's not getting easier. My cable provider also renewed it's program, and that ended up costing me 30% more, while nothing else changed. So more hassle to redeem points is a minor issue, in perspective.

The translations on the Dutch site are hilarious, though. "Redeem" was translated as "Verlossen". While redeem is a correct translation of verlossen, verlossen is more like the "rescue" meaning of redeem. Might be that TLG has divine aspirations, though...

Here's hoping "rescuing" points takes minutes, not weeks...

edit: ah, it seems you also have to choose between wanting to spend your voucher online or in a store, too...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was at my local store last week and the guy ringing me up mentioned this "big change coming". He said they would still accept the VIP cards (I'm old, sue me--I like cards!) for a while but eventually would be app-based.

He did NOT mention the bit about the vouchers and whatnot, which seems like a big step backwards.

If I can login to a site and see my points in real-time, an app can do the same.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Have GWPs been binned in favour of having to use points to get the freebies?

If so, I think I’ll be spending my money on other online stores at a fraction of LEGO’s prices and then use the leftover money to buy the ‘freebies’ on eBay

Gravatar
By in United States,

After not being able to get to the rewards section, I cleared my cache and cookies, and that seems to have done the trick.

According to the FAQ, you'll still use your VIP card to redeem your vouchers, and you should be prevented from making a $49 purchase with a $50 voucher so as to prevent lost value on the voucher. Also, I was able to add my VIP card to my Apple Wallet. Not sure if the was an option before now.

Like in the Netherlands the German translation on the rewards page is also funny, as if translated by a robot. Doesn't anyone capable at TLG (if indeed there is such a person, somehow I have my doubts these days) proof-read such stuff before it goes live? What a bunch of incapable...
To me, Cobi is quickly becoming what LEGO once was. Great sets, awesome customer service, and above all, almost exclusively prints instead of those abominable stickers everywhere, especially in high price sets where there is simply no justification for them, other than cheaping-out on the customer. Oh and did I mention that Mega Construx also uses prints only in their sets? There you go TLG!

I wonder if LEGO will consider backing out of that voucher nonsense based on feedback. We should be given the seamless experience back.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's a really terrible system. I can only think TLG are trying to make it harder for people to spend their points, without outright scrapping the scheme altogether.

I accidentally converted my points into a voucher I can only spend in store. I accept nobody made me do it but it wouldn't have happened under the old system.

The threshold spend freebies have been uninspiring for years. I'll buy my Lego from Amazon from now on where sets are routinely discounted by 33% and I'll use the money I save to buy the threshold spend freebies I want off eBay.

Great work, Lego.

As of the 14th, my VIP account still hasn't linked to the ID. In addition, my wishlist has been zeroed out. I have no problem with LEGO attempting a new rewards system, but this roll out was poorly executed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Question for those outside of the US, have you tried earning extra points in the new system via the social media / feedback questionnaires? For US, those earn you 25 points - I'm curious if it's also 25 points in other currency regions. If so, there's an inequity in their point reward system since points are supposed to be weighted by currency now based on the Danish Krone, i.e. US should be 6x point value.

Also note that you can only use one voucher code per order on LEGO.com online, whereas multiple vouchers can be used in physical stores. So that means the highest discount you can redeem now for an online order is 100 $/£/€, unless I'm missing something and the online vouchers can be combined into one voucher worth more than 100.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I still can't even log in to my rewards centre - and it won't let me register a new account either,so I don't know what I'm supposed to do. And a sale is on. Fantastic.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The site seems to be working well enough for me, but I'm not really very enthused by the new system. I can understand TLG wanting to close some of the loopholes for potential abuse in the system (though how many people were really taking advantage of them to any great extent?) and I can appreciate having more things to get with my VIP points and more ways to earn them--but still, it feels awkward and unfriendly. One more source of harmless pleasure gone from my life...so it goes. Too bad.

By in Serbia,

Cool.

There are 195 countries in the world. LEGO Shop only delivers to 31 of them. Expand your delivery options, fellas, please!

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Yeah, that "select countries only" policy seems rather inflexible and outdated in an age where pretty much every two-bit webshop delivers worldwide. It was a real pain here in Norway as we didn't get SaH until around 2009, despite them advertising it in the main catalog for about a decade by then.

I remember trying to order the 10029 Lunar Lander but they absolutely refused to deliver it, even when I offered to pay any extra postage and taxes. Worse, the Norwegian distributor was really arrogant and condescending when I called them about it, talking to me like I was a little child (I was in my 30's) using phrases like "you can't have the toy" etc. and not even give me a proper reason, just state that that's how it is. When I later ordered the Cafe Corner I had to get it delivered to a relative's holiday house in Sweden, and I ended up buying the 10029 via Bricklink.

I later heard it was the Norwegian distributor who blocked the introduction of SaH, as they had a really gold-plated deal (giving them sole import rights) from the early days of Lego. I believe Norway was actually the first country Lego exported to, and for a period at least some of it were actually made here due to the high import taxes on plastic toys.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ Mattw2 thanks for confirming - I've also contacted LEGO customer support about the perceived $100 limit on the online voucher redemption to know if there's some way to allow a higher amount.

@jondenial Chrome works fine, people may need to clear their cache first and then launch to the site in regular mode (not incognito mode) the first time. After that the new VIP site should load correctly and let you login to your VIP account.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

So I was 13 points away from £5 reward before this new system, and have spent £30+ since. Unfortunately I had no idea or I would have bought stuff sooner, because now I'm 348 points away. I take it the previous points haven't been added yet? If they didn't scale the previous ones up then that's a bit ridiculous.

Gravatar
By in United States,

You know after an incident with the VIP program where one of the LEGO employees was "stealing points" from customers who weren't a part of the VIP program, LEGO has been acting a little odd after it... I guess its a conspiracy theory, but it seems how VIP members have to do so many things to use points and it just seems more strict. I mean idk how this will discourage point stealing, but it just seems odd. Just to add this new program seems to have been worked on the day before the release because of how terrible the execution of this program was. But oh well... just my theory and opinion of this dumpster fire of a situation....

Gravatar
By in United States,

@darkstonegrey I tried that multiple times on 3 different computers, no add-ons or extensions. Win 8.1 & Win 10, didn't matter. After 2 days of no change I tried Firefox and it worked immediately, first try. I have no explanation as to why this was the case for me, but since it solved my problem I figured that it might help someone else. The "clear your cache" thing is the first thing I do when having site issues, sometimes it works. For me, tonight, VIP still doesn't work on Chrome. If I figure out I have something in my router's firewall settings causing this I will update with a confession ;) I'm just glad I didn't lose all my points. So far I hate the redemption options :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

After 6 days my points have still not been returned to my account. It was unclear whether or not I had to re-register. And not wanting to cause more confusion I called Customer Service.

I do not have to reregister and they are supposed to have it all fixed by tomorrow...sure.

The nice gentleman also said that LEGO is very aware how poorly this New Improved VIP Voucher Program is being received. They are watching all the social media sites as well as logging all complaints from CS. Please provide feedback to LEGO.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The idea of the new VIP Program in itself is not so bad, but the execution is.

Also, I was planning to buy the Harley-Davidson today, but even with my adblocker disabled, I am apparently only a VIP when I am in the reward center, not when I am in the shop.

I don't know where in the IT department it went wrong, but I fantasize it went something like:
- Management: "we want this live on July 10th"
- Super enthusiastic underpaid junior devs: "yea we can do that"
- ..Time passes by..
- Worried underpaid junior devs: "we ran into things we could not foresee so we are not going to make it before the 10th of July"
- Management: "but can you try"
- Devs: "it is not like we were not trying before you asked. We do have a prototype but it uses all kinds of shortcuts and we have not tested our migrations on production data."
- Management: "I don't know what that means. Just ship it."

Gravatar
By in United States,

@jondenial sorry to hear that, at least you have it working in Firefox. I got it working thru Chrome on Mac OS but haven't tried yet on Windows OS.

Still haven't gotten a response back yet from CS regarding my emailed questions. I'll give them a few more days seeing as they probably got a ton of questions/complaints to attend to.

By in Austria,

The new experience to exchange VIP points for discounts is ridiculous.
Now you have to go OUT of the site, redeem a bunch of vouchers, then go BACK to the cart, then apply ONE BY ONE each voucher, and THEN you have your discount.

Oh and if you change your mind meanwhile and want to redeem less points, there's no way of cancelling a voucher and it expires in 30 days.

I've already contacted customer service to complain the current implementation is awful. I'd advise everyone to do the same. The more people complain, the faster they change at least that back.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My first experience with this was this last weekend going into the Lego store. They way this was rolled out screams spreadsheet project management to me. There was some idea that makes sense on paper but once put into practice is awful. I was told by a store associate the reason they made the change was to globalize their VIP program. All this is doing for me is make me seriously reconsider purchasing sets directly from Lego.

Rule 1 with Business: Anytime you make it more difficult for Customers to spend their money (that includes reward money) on your products they will go somewhere else. This is a step in the wrong direction for the Lego Company.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Frustratingly I can only access my VIP points by logging in on a Safari browser. I can't view my points on a Chrome browser at all. Lego's IT dept is aware of this flaw in their VIP 2.0 programme and are working to fix it, but have no timescale for when all browsers will be useable. That said it is a terrible new VIP programme and is unnecessarily complex and restrictive. No improvement at all. Quite the contrary. Basically the changes are to suit TLG, not their customers and that sucks.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So, I feel the need to update this VIP program since my initial comment at launch (*see above). I went in to my local Lego brand store today to purchase the Harley Davidson Creator set. Upon check out, I expressed my disappointment in the new VIP program. The lady at check out was extremely helpful and walked me through redeeming points at checkout.

In summary, you log into your VIP account and redeem the appropriate amount for in-store purchase. After redeeming, it goes to your VIP card and their computer and I was able to use $50 in a matter of 30 seconds.

I'm not saying it's great, nor am I advocating for the new program. It's still more cumbersome, but it wasn't nearly as long or difficult as I thought it would be.

Thanks to Marci at the Tigard, Oregon (USA) store for your assistance and wonderful customer service.

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the issues that I couldn't initially wrap my head around (and I say *one* because this whole thing is currently a mess) is the segregated voucher redemption. You have to choose between LBR/Phone -or- Online. It turns out that the reasoning behind this is due to different ownership, with shop.lego.com being separate from the retail stores (much like LEGOLAND / LEGOLAND Discovery Center).

As a consumer, that makes my head explode and also doesn't seem like something we (again, as consumers) need to be bothered with. From a consumer standpoint, LEGO / LEGO.COM / LEGOLAND should be a seamless experience.

I will say that I have been a diehard LBR customer. I know that I can get new sets, that aren't D2C, 20% off on release from places like Walmart / Target / Amazon, etc., but, I love banking my VIP Points. I've actually redeemed them for two Millennium Falcons. When this new "upgrade" happened, I was sitting on $500 worth of points - which I still am.

I was never alerted via email that the switch over happened, and by the time I saw it on Reddit the Bat Pod was long gone. To get the third Marvel poster, not only do I have to redeem points, but then I have to buy something else, plus pay shipping if that item isn't over $35. That, to me as a very loyal customer, is a big slap in the face. I've redeemed my share of Disney Rewards for random things and have never had to buy anything on top of the award, paying shipping, etc.

Outside of the latest D2C set (Harley-Davidson Fat Boy), which I did buy at my local LBR store, I bought a dozen or so sets that didn't come directly from LEGO - which is a first for me. Between Amazon Prime Day, the deals Walmart had before that, and current clearance deals from Target & Walmart, I just don't find it worth my time to make the 45 minute trip to my LBR store... which really sucks as I really miss seeing everyone that works there, the experience of being in the store, and just having that overall "LEGO Experience".

Found this great 2017 article by Alex Keats ... https://blog.smile.io/rewards-case-study-lego-vip-program . One just has to replace the words "is" by "was" to update it to the current VIP-program.

I especially like the endquote :

"LEGO takes the simplicity of their creations and applies it to their VIP program in a fun way that is sure to promote engagement from customers. I know I’ve said it a hundred times, but the name of the game for LEGO is clarity and simplicity. If we can learn anything from them, it’s that a rewards program should be as easy to follow as a set of LEGO building instructions."
