Netspend has their H-E-B debit card which offers a linked savings account with 6% APY on balances up to $2,000. Balances above that amount get .50% APY.
Direct Link to H-E-B Debit Card
You can get the H-E-B card even if you have another version of the Netspend debit cards. Years ago I spent a lot of time parsing out the options with Netspend cards since it was possible to get 5% APY on up to $5,000, and to multiply that by opening various versions of the Netspend cards. These became much less interesting in 2016 when they lowered the max to just $1,000, though given the current environment of low interest rates some might revisit these accounts.
This H-E-B card is more interesting than the other Netspend cards since they are now offering a higher 6% rate and also a higher $2,000 limit. We’ve added this to our list of Best High Yield Savings Accounts.
Note: there is a $4.95/month inactivity fee is the account is inactive for more than 90 days, so you need to set up a recurring transfer in order to avoid the fee if you don’t plan on using the card.
Also note, you need to activate the card before funding the account or it’ll get locked; also, you need to add $1 to your prepaid card before you can activate the savings account. This card does not have a referral program.
There are also a few bonuses possible to get with this card (or possibly any Netspend card), including $10 for depositing a check, $15 for direct deposit, and $5 for loading the account – see more about these potential offers in this comment from reader ShawntheShawn. You can also get 5% back on H-E-B spend with the prepaid card.
Feel free to discuss this or other Netspend accounts in the comments below.
Got an email regarding their fees, days to avoid inactivity has been reduced from 90 days to 60, most of their fees have increased, they also added a new one= transferring funds out of netspend using third party service like Venmo, PayPal, WU etc will pay 3$(hopefully this doesn’t apply to regular ach), they also removed all plans and will get everyone into pay as you go, anyone using the automated transfer every 2 months = is time to update it to avoid getting hit with inactivity fee. @chuck William Charles

Evilex,
Some of us discussed the change at the below link.

Has anyone obtained this card recently outside of TX and adjacent states?
Is there a backdoor number to call for help? The main number assumes that I already have a card and I don’t think there’s a way to get a human.
I get “We are unable to complete your request at this time” whenever I try to get past the first page of the application. I get this with 5 different browsers on 3 different networks on 4 different devices, all cookies are on, all adblockers disabled, tried incognito and non-incognito.
This happens when I input my real information and also when I input garbage, like “testy mctestface” in Austin TX, stuff like that.
Yeees, I got in. It may be a hack, I will tell you once my card is up and running.
Just checking in: have they come up with a better way to verify your identity than unsecured email of identification documents?
@chuck
I transfered $400 into my HEB Netspend card from T Mobile Money (ach) and got a $40 bonus!
Says “Credit: Applied Incentive Code: 1Q24 Load $400 Get 40.”
I also recievrd this on my Netspend Ace card. Will also try my other two Netspend cards, original and western union.
I don’t know if this is targeted or not. It seems like its a q1 promotion for transferring in $400, so time is ticking.
Did you receive an offer by email or some other way? If not, what made you transfer exactly $400?
Did anyone get random dd from this company? I got 2 $500 payments. The transaction literally has “Terminal Malfunction” in the description. Gonna leave the funds in the acct and contact them next wk if they haven’t taken it back yet.
Another round of $25 cash back for spending $150+ just came in.
Same for my P2. She now has two of these heb debit accounts and we mistakenly used same email for both. I don’t know which one is targeted (!)
Cashapp is not appearing to work this time around or the payout is a lot slower.
Thanks for the helpful DP. Am trying PayPal bill pay. If that doesn’t work will probably just pay hoa part of hoa fees despite ~4% charge for paying by card (debit or credit) as still comes out ahead.
Already got credit for PayPal Bill pay
I did a money order from Fred Meyer but nothing posted. Eventually after a month I complained to their secure message and threatened to file a complaint with the CFPB. Their support agents were useless but I got a phone call a few days later from a person who wanted to see the terms. I sent those over and got the $25 credit posted.
Thanks for the DP. Sorry you had such a difficult experience but glad that you finally received the $25 credit!
Interestingly did for both heb debit cards as wasn’t sure which was targeted. Received $25 credit for BOTH accounts
So your P2 was able to get 2 HEB Debit cards each with a $2K Savings account? What other Netspend products does your P2 have?
P2 HAS 2 HEB Debit cards each with a $2k savings account but P2 only APPLIED for one. P2 was offered for some time to convert HEB Netspend card to HEB debit card but didn’t want to do it in case it wouldn’t work out. After interest rates went above 5% we gave it a go and it worked. Otherwise has all the standard Netspend cards (5 total well now 4 since we converted one to heb debit) plus Porte. Of note P1 never offered such a conversion. Also we are both in foot print for HEB.
EDITED TO ADD: to make chronology clearer, P2 first applied to heb debit card when it made it to DoC few years ago. P2 only converted heb Netspend card to the heb debit card (hence heb debit card number 2) towards beginning of Q3 or Q4 2023.
Is your regular Netspend referral still worth $40? I signed up and when I logged into my acct, I have a referral link for $20. Is yours $20 or $40?
No, I just checked and it’s now only $20. Thank you for notifying me. I will update it.
Got a targeted offer for $25 cash back for spending $150+ in a month:
Special Offer: Earn $25 cash back when you spend $150+ within a month
To redeem this offer, you must: spend $150 or more by (30 days from email send date). A $25 credit will be applied to your Account within 10 business days after the qualifying purchase transaction(s) post to your Account. Limit one (1) offer per government ID number. Offer may not be transferred to others, exchanged for other offers, or redeemed for cash. Not valid with any other offer. Void where prohibited. Pathward, N.A., and Mastercard are not affiliated in any way with this optional offer and do not endorse or sponsor this offer.
I went to Fred Meyer and bought a $149 money order with a $1 fee. I got the $25 instantly (Credit: applied incentive code: 2023 HEB Debit Lapsing Promo SepNov). So maybe this offer would have worked if I did a Cash App transfer. I didn’t want to risk it and didn’t know they would pay out so quickly.
Got this but $25 for spending $100 Chuck

I got that too. Going to try CashApp and if that doesn’t work, another MO
Let us know if cash app works!
When you said it was instant, did the post have to clear for the cash back to show? Just did a cash app reload and am not seeing the $25 credit. Looks like it’s going to have to be an Amazon GC reload for me
Did cashapp too but nothing yet. i still see it as pending so maybe once it posts, the bonus will come. when i did a money order i dont think it was pending and the credit was applied the next minute,
AZGC reload also did not trigger an instant cash back. Will wait for these transactions to clear to make sure I don’t get any cash back then will actually the card at a brick and mortar
Both Cash App and Amazon reloads posted and the credit appeared. It doesn’t show up under cash back but as a line item in the spend account. Mine showed as “Credit: applied incentive code: 2023 HEB Debit Lapsed Promo SepNov Awarded”
Davis did your Cash App reload post? And if so, are you seeing the credit?
Edit: actually looking at the transactions closer, the Amazon GC reload posted first, then the $25 credit came through, then the Cash App reload cleared, so looks like Cash App won’t trigger but AZ GC reload will
Confirmed that cash app reload itself worked
fearthez,
I had this $25 CB offer on $100 purchase on my HEB. I used PayPal BP for the $100 and my bonus posted while the purchase was still pending.
Just closed my account and moved all money out after debit card compromised. Was charged a .04¢ foreign transaction fee that I am disputing. I’ve never used the debit card and there was only $1 in my spend account so luckily they didn’t get anything else.
Just had an unauthorized $1.50 charge at amazon.mx. Maybe somekind of breach? I never used the card anywhere. I just reported the card stolen and it deactivated the card. It did keep the 6% savings account open, so I may just keep it like it is (without an activated card).
Up to how many accounts i can open? Like 5 accounts per one SSN?
