Who does the Login process
In Unix who takes care of the login process...?
Is it kernel or shell... or some other program...?

Kernel wont interact with users.
And shell doesn't get started before login process...

getty from a TTY

sshd from an incoming SSH connection

xdm from a XDCMP negotiation

telnetd from a incoming telnet connection

(... and a few more eg rlogin..)

getty is the proceess which would help you in login while doing a direct login to the machine
sshd '' '' '' while doing login through ssh shell
telnetd " "" "" through telnet
xdm "" "" through an xserver remotely
