Diversity, equity and inclusion staff members' jobs in North Carolina's public university system could be at risk. The University of North Carolina Board of Governors committee quickly voted to repeal a DEI policy adopted in 2019. The policy will now be sent to the full board to vote on at its next meeting in May. The existing policy outlines the roles of DEI officers across the university system, and the proposed replacement policy does not mention those staff positions. Any repeal of DEI policy would follow the lead of other institutions that have removed their DEI offices, such as the University of Florida.

A North Carolina appeals court says Gov. Roy Cooper's executive orders to keep bars closed during the COVID-19 pandemic while allowing restaurants that also serve alcohol to reopen were “illogical.” An N.C. Court of Appeals panel ruled unanimously Tuesday that a trial judge erred when he rejected claims by the North Carolina Bar and Tavern Association and private bars that their constitutional rights to earn a living and for equal treatment under the law had been violated. Cooper's office defended state actions during the pandemic. The N.C. Supreme Court could now hear the case. It also could return to trial on the issue of monetary damages.

Sinking technology stocks sent Wall Street lower again, and the S&P 500 fell to its fourth straight loss. The index dipped 0.6% Wednesday for its longest losing streak since early January. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down by 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 1.1%. Tech stocks slumped after ASML, a Dutch company that’s a major supplier to the semiconductor industry, reported weaker orders than analysts expected. That helped overshadow stronger quarterly profit reports than expected from United Airlines and other big companies. Treasury yields fell following a sharp tumble in oil prices.
An engineer at Boeing alleges the aircraft company is taking manufacturing shortcuts that could lead to jetliners breaking apart. The engineer, Sam Salehpour, testified before a Senate subcommittee on Wednesday about about Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner. "They are putting out defective airplanes,” he said. Hundreds of Dreamliners are in use by airlines, mostly on international routes. Salehour spoke while another Senate committee held a separate hearing on the safety culture at Boeing. The company has been under multiple investigations and in crisis mode since a door-plug panel blew off a 737 Max jetliner during an Alaska Airlines flight in January.
Biden vows to block US Steel acquisition by a Japanese company and promises tariffs on Chinese steel
President Joe Biden has told an audience of cheering unionized steelworkers that his administration will block the acquisition of U.S. Steel by a Japanese company, potentially. And he's calling for a tripling of tariffs on Chinese steel. The Democratic president is seeking to use trade policy to win over working-class votes in Pennsylvania, an election-year battleground. He said Wednesday that U.S. Steel “has been an iconic American company for more than a century and it should remain totally American.” His administration is reviewing the proposed acquisition by Japan’s Nippon Steel. On the tariff front, Chinese imports account for only a small percentage of the steel products coming into the United States so the higher fees are largely symbolic.
