M&T Bank is a disgrace. I opened an account online for their advertised $500 bonus and followed every instruction. They sent me a debit card, a checkbook, a welcome letter, and even a bank statement showing the account was opened on March 24 and closed on March 28. I was never notified that I had to go to a branch to verify my identity—no call, no letter, no real warning—just some alleged email I never received.
Meanwhile, they kept sending me mail as if everything was fine. On April 19, I received a letter saying they "hoped I was enjoying my new account" — three weeks after they had closed it! If that’s not proof of total incompetence or deception, I don’t know what is.
They had no problem letting me redirect my Social Security deposit into this problematic account. Then they told me the account never existed. I wasted half a day at the Social Security office fixing their mistake. When I tried to resolve the issue at the branch, they admitted the $500 promotion was gone and insulted me with a $100 offer. Unbelievable.
This was classic bait-and-switch. M&T Bank can’t even keep their story straight. They're reckless, disorganized, and show zero respect for people's time or money—especially seniors. I wouldn't trust them to manage a lemonade stand.
Do yourself a favor: stay far away from M&T Bank.
In addition, their automated customer service system is the worst. I can't get through to a live person.
