NHS bursaries – applications are now open
An update on NHS bursaries and how students can apply now..

Students starting NHS funded courses in academic year 2016/17 will be the last to get bursary funding for their course. As reported in the last issue of Exchange, following the government spending review in 2015, student loans will now replace NHS bursary funding.

However, students on nursing, midwifery and other allied health professional courses, who are continuing on their courses or starting a new course in 2016, will continue to receive NHS funding for the length of their course and are able to apply for their NHS bursary funding now!

New students

New students who are starting their course between June and October 2016 and have been offered a place on an NHS funded course are being encouraged to submit their applications now.

They should apply through the Bursary Online Support System (BOSS) on the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) website at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/Students where they can also find all the information they need to help them apply.

Continuing students

Students who are continuing on their NHS funded course will be sent a letter or text to let them know the best time to reapply.

Some students have already had their invites, but the remainder will be sent by the end of April.

Top Tip

Advise your continuing students to make sure they submit their applications by the deadline suggested by the NHSBSA to make sure there’s no break in their payments.

To get an NHS bursary all students have to submit their application and any supporting evidence no later than six months after the start of the academic year – Remember, this is a different deadline from their student finance from Student Finance England, where they have to apply within nine months of the start of the academic year.

Encourage your students to keep their contact details up to date and check their junk/spam folders for emails from NHSBSA.
