Problems appear to have started at around 6am but reports quickly escalated as more users ran into trouble getting onto the site.

Around 81% of complaints came from users being unable to simply log on.

Almost another 20% meanwhile, had trouble using the website altogether.

On Twitter the bank addressed the issue.

It said: "We're experiencing intermittent technical issues with website logins this morning."

But not all was lost for savers who struggling to check their results this morning.

There was a way around the technical fault as the bank suggested using the prize checker on its front page or the prize checker app.

The temporary fix didn't stop customers airing their frustrations on social media though.

Plenty were furious that the site has been inaccessible this morning.

One said: "I'm unable to log in and I keep getting a red box with a message saying a technical error has occurred."

While another said: "Any luck in getting that website fixed yet NS&I? Keep getting ‘technical error’ when trying to login."

A third simply said: "Disappointing."

And a fourth said: "NS&I website is a disgrace...there's always problems logging in."

The site is typically used to buy Premium Bonds.

Premium Bonds are a way to save but are different from a savings account because they don’t offer interest.

Instead, you’re in with a regular chance to win a prize with as much as £1million up for grabs.

But plenty of users woke up disappointed to find they couldn't track those prizes this morning with the major technical fault taking place.

An NS&I spokesperson said: "NS&I customers attempting to access our website this morning may have experienced intermittent issues when trying to login.

"Our team is working hard to rectify this and we will provide an update in due course.

"Money invested with NS&I remains safe and is 100% backed by HM Treasury.

"NS&I would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused."

It has said that the site should be up and running again for customers now though.

How do I check if I have won?

You can usually use the NS&I Premium Bond prize checker online to see if your numbers have come up.

You'll need to know the numbers of your Premium Bonds which can be found on your Bond record or through your online account.

If you've lost track of your numbers you can ask NS&I for them.

There's also an official app for iPhones and for Androids for checking prizes too, and even an App for Amazon Echo which means you can just ask Alexa.

For this you will need to use your NS&I number rather than each Premium Bond number. It's 11 digits long and will be on any communication you've had with NS&I.

This morning though, many users faced difficulty trying to access the resources.

But you don't always need to check your numbers as you can get prizes under £5,000 paid straight into your bank account, or automatically buying more Premium Bonds.
