Two heavily armed men entered the Uncle Credit Union Bank on Grant Line Road this morning and fled with an undetermined amount of cash.

According to police, both men were black, 25 to 35 years old, and 5 to 6 feet tall. One man was described wearing an orange safety vest with a blue hardhat carrying a machine gun, and the other man was described as thin with a baseball cap and long dreadlocks carrying a handgun.

The men entered the bank around 10:19 a.m. at 1960 W. Grant Line Road and yelled that the bank was being robbed. They demanded everyone to lie on the floor before they took the money, police said.

Witnesses reported seeing the gunmen running out of the bank together. They ran across the parking lot going south toward a 10-foot wall adjacent to Rite Aide, where they jumped onto an electrical box and over to the other side of the wall.

“I was taking the garbage out, and they ran right by me,” said Gene Burkett of Burkett’s Consignment & More. “The bigger guy said, ‘Excuse me.’ They were booking it. I had no idea what happened.”

Burkett said the police arrived quickly and immediately searched the neighborhoods.

The bank employees were reportedly shaken, but no one was injured. There was a report that someone inside the bank was having chest pains following the robbery and that person was assisted by medical personnel.

As police searched with K-9 and S.W.A.T. in the adjacent neighborhoods, going door to door near Alegre and Duncan drives, three nearby schools were put on lockdown — West High School, Institute of Global Commerce and Government, and the Little Country Child Care.

During the search, police were assisted by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s and California Highway Patrol, who stood armed in the bank parking lot facing the wall the gunmen were last seen jumping.

A CHP aircraft could also be seen circling from above to try and spot the gunmen on the ground.

Local merchants said they were scared by the incident.

“It’s a sign of things getting a little rough,” Loretta Vargas said, co-owner of Bella’s Grooming Boutique. “In broad daylight — that’s a concern.”

The manager of Great Clips, Julie Rudnick said she saw the man dressed like a construction worker being chased by another man as he ran across the parking lot.

“It’s scary,” she said. “A lady in the nail salon said they dropped $150.”

After a two-hour search, police were unable to find the gunmen and stopped their search.

Police said the men should be considered armed and dangerous. If anyone sees them, they should contact the Tracy Police Department at 831-4550.
