The process to sign up was easy, of course. The process for a claim was utterly ridiculous.
1) I was never able to speak with an actual human, over a period of about 3 months.
2) I only received emails and snail mail. When I replied to emails, I think I only once received a confirming reply—if that.
3) Submitting documents was difficult. When submitting by email, it was never confirmed. I only ever learned if it had failed, which would be weeks after sending the document when I received a letter or email asking for the same document again.
In the end, I gave up on trying. For a claim as small as this and so obviously within my coverage, it wasn't worth giving more hours to the difficult process.
Aside: Their claims portal online had bugs. Submitting documents on there was impossible. As a web developer, I couldn't even work around it. It may be an edge case bug, but it's still a bug. I received no response when I tried to communicate that to them either.

Horrible company, just making money. Do not go with this company, because when it's time to file a claim, the adjuster Antoinette never calls you back. I filed a claim 6 weeks ago and I have only spoken with the adjuster once. I left several messages for Supervisor Alex Hernandez; he never called me back. I canceled my insurance and am going with a different company that does value me as a customer and does not see me as someone from whom they can just take my hard-earned money. Also, good luck with their customer service from out of the country. They don't understand English.

The only reason I give them a 1 is because I have to pick a star! They are worthless. I paid insurance for years and never had a claim. I filed a claim saying I think there is water coming in from the neighbor's roof, and I also had a pipe burst. They come out and only look at certain things, then never get back to me. When I call to see what's going on, the operators hang up on me as they transfer me, which is very convenient. So they tell me that I had to file a separate claim for my water leak which occurred several days after the first claim. They denied the first claim due to wear and tear and depreciation. I had a water mitigation company come out; they estimated the damage at $38,000. Assurant, for the second claim, says that the damages are under $2,000, which is my deductible. They said if I have any questions, please call. I called several times and got no reply. So the water we originally thought was possibly coming from the roof was actually due to the leak in the basement. So a claim they denied that they said I had to file when I originally called had nothing to do with anything, yet they give me this nonsensical explanation. Save the money you would pay them for your premiums and use it when something happens. Their company is terrible!

Assurant and adjuster Ray R. are the worst I have ever dealt with. I paid for home insurance through Geico and purchased an Assurant home policy. In December 2023, I had a sudden and unexpected pinhole leak. It ruined a solid hardwood floor, two sides of a wall, and more. Assurant, knowing it was a covered claim, paid me $5,500. They assumed I could find the same type of hardwood to repair the damaged area. However, the floor has not been made since 2009, and the rules state that they have to purchase me a brand-new floor of similar quality. They need to pay me $22,000, as I have the type of insurance that replaces at current costs. The floor, the walls, the baseboards, the paint, a hotel, and food for me for three days because I can’t be here when it’s done, will cost at least $22,000. But they are avoiding me. When you try to call Assurant, they have technology on their phones that blocks anyone whose phone number has a claim. It took me five tries with different phones and techniques to get through. Assurant makes sure to assign you adjusters on the other side of the country. Mine go home at 2 PM my time. They never answer your emails, and I have trackers on mine, so I know they open them. They have tried various techniques to avoid paying me. This is all planned by Assurant because they don’t want to pay. That’s wrong, as they are in the business to provide relief when you experience a disaster. Assurant has not even paid the mitigation people, nor paid me back because I paid them. I also paid for an asbestos check, which I was not reimbursed for. It’s been four months. They’re taking advantage of my 85-year-old mother; they’re taking advantage of me. They take advantage of everyone. Look at their Yelp reviews. They take advantage of honest consumers who trust them. They are a dishonest company that will not be there when you need them. They take our premiums and don’t deliver the product they promised, and when we try to collect, they avoid us, block us, and ignore us.

Worst insurance company that I have ever had the misfortune of working with. Paid them over $400 for 9 months of coverage for my new S23 Ultra. The screen got cracked. Even with a zagg screen protector. I paid $31, and they sent me to a repair shop that didn't have the parts to fix my device. Then, I got put on a waiting list. When the part finally came in, they wouldn't make an appointment to fix it, even though they now had the part, saying my only option was to pay them an additional $99, and they would send me a "new" device. It got delayed twice and turned out to be used, not even the same color as my original. I asked for a refund, canceling their overpriced "service." I can get it for free from my credit union and only have a $50 deductible, instead of the $250 this company was charging me. I should have read the fine print more carefully.

Horrible company, they will do anything not to pay a claim. Find a company that will work with you and send an actual adjuster, not a place that just takes your money and finds an excuse not to pay a claim.

Assurant. Hi, everyone. Do not do business with this company. Full stop. A tree caused damage to my home on January 14, 2024. My home is in the same condition as of March 25, 2024. Assurant is the absolute worst company I have ever had the misfortune to do business with. The insurance adjuster does not return my calls, so the work can begin, and I will have assurance that I can pay to stay someplace else while the work gets done.
Work is going to begin on 4/2/24, and I have no funds from Assurant to stay someplace else. This is not something that can wait over 10 days to resolve. This is what has been happening every step of the way with this company! I am sick of it! The stress of this has been completely overwhelming. This is all not my responsibility to deal with. It is theirs, and they are not holding up their end of the contract! They are making me deal with this disaster on my own, and I have to fight to get a return phone call, time and time again!

Horrible company. They don't communicate with the customer in a timely manner, delay processing claims, and refuse to pay market prices for needed services. Their supervisors never return phone calls and they simply don't deliver services a customer pays for.

They've been neglecting my claim since 2022. I was finally awarded in September 2023 after hiring a public adjuster. However, now I'm in search of my recoverable amount since December and nothing has happened. It's March 11th. I've sent emails and left messages. At this point, they must've flagged my number because I'm getting the same response. Anyhow, I'm now in the midst of having an attorney handle it, and it's going to cost them way more than what they owe me. I plan to take legal action against them. I absolutely despise this company.

I only chose 1 star because 0 stars was not an option! Terrible insurance, terrible company and even worse customer service. If you are thinking about using Assurant for your renters insurance, or any other product they offer for that matter, consider self insuring instead. Put the money you would make a payment to them for in a savings account and if you ever have a claim use that money in your savings to pay yourself....you will be much better off I assure you. We had smoke damage from a fire in Lahaina, Hawaii that happened August 8th. We had an awful time just getting our claim to them. Assurant had no claim adjusters on Maui so they told us to make a list and photos of everything that could not be washed in a washing machine and was a soft good. Their system would not allow us to give them the list that they requested in any form or the photos they requested. Their online system was impossible and we are computer literate people. We eventually had to text our items and pictures to a phone number. We had 57 items! We later found out that they only got 39 items. It is now March 8th and we are still trying to get them to add the items! Aaaand we had to do it via text again, so today we resent items 40 through 57 with pictures again.
We are on our 3rd claim agent and we have left messages for their manager and have not ever spoken to a manager. However, we have found the best way to get a reply is to leave a message for the manager and then the claim agent actually calls you back.
Value of our items - This is terrible! I have many examples for you but will share just one small example from our list. I am a Scuba Diving Instructor and guide. My BCD was one of the items damaged. I have an Apeks Exotec BCD that sells for $1099.00 everywhere you look (google it). I provided a picture of the damaged BCD that clearly shows that it is in fact an Apeks Exotec. I was offered a replacement cost of $253.46 for a "Edge Element Jacket BCD" from Divers Supply AND they devalued it 50% because it was used. That means that I received $126.73 from Assurant for my $1100.00 BCD. I find that ridiculous. I have tried to appeal the valuation as it was not for the exact item and they refuse without a receipt (which I do not have) and say that it is a like item (it is not even in the same galaxy).
If you call to get info on your claim I have never been directly answered by my claim agent. You can leave a voicemail. It is an average of about a week to hear a reply. Your best bet is to leave a voicemail for a manager and then you may get a call back same day or next day. The last time we spoke to our claim agent (before today) was on Jan 11th. At that time we were told they were working on the additional items that were missed and would get back to us. As of today we have not received a phone call, an email or a text with an update. When she called us today (after leaving her and her manager a voicemail) she said she never received the items.
We have also had problems with Additional Living Expenses and getting reimbursed. They will not accept us renting an apartment from a family member (for extremely cheap and way below market value here in Colorado!) and want us to go to a hotel to get reimbursed. A hotel here in Colorado (and it would be MUCH more expensive in Maui!!!!) would cover about 5 days what we are paying for a months rent. So we have requested groceries and fuel reimbursement for additional living expenses. We made this request before January 11th and still have not heard a reply or received payment for these additional living expenses.
We were also told by a friend in the insurance business that smoke damages electronics and they warned to save items on hard drives, memory cards, thumbdrives etc as they are likely to fail along with tv's etc. Assurant will not even allow us to add electronics to our claim, stating that we have to have a verified service and proof the item was damaged from smoke. That means that I have to wait until the item dies, take it into a service company and then attempt to add it to this claim two years from now. That would also mean mailing my TV that dies in to Samsung or Sony or LG. The shipping cost off island alone would be more than the TV costs.
In conclusion, I am very unhappy with Assurant as a company and would highly recommend literally any other insurance company out there. My original policy was purchased through Geico who farms the renters insurance out to Assurant. I will be passing this information along to Geico to encourage them to drop Assurant as their provider of renters insurance.

I can't even describe how deeply infuriating this whole"process" was. I opened a claim on February 14th and after 18 days, I've barely been notified that my replacement phone has shipped out. First they claimed my phone wasn't insured - IT WAS. Then, they claimed I needed to update my phone with TMobile - IT WAS. Then, they requested a receipt of purchase for this phone - HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO GET A RECEIPT FROM A PHONE THAT YOU ********S SENT ME IN THE FIRST PLACE. Then, they requested a picture of my driver's license, front and back - (for who knows what??) I did. Then, they claimed I only submitted the back but not the front of the license - Yuuup, of cooourse I "DID". How convenient. Then, they said it will take 3-5 days to review. 5 days are up and STILL nothing. What were you dumb****s even "reviewing"?? Bunch of bullshi***rs. I wish I could cuss every single one of you dumb***** out in person just for being so ******* stupid. And then, in their email which has the shipping tracking number, they still have zero shame to say "don't forget to send back the old phone in time or you'll be charged". **** YOU. GO **** YOURSELVES YOU PIECES OF ****.

Had a very bad experience. Don't expect to get reimbursed for a penny. This company makes claims very complicated and difficult and tries to find a way to avoid paying anything. Stay away from any credit card that is covered under this company.

Don't ever get insurance with them. They're the worst, especially Ruben Rueda, the claims adjuster. I wonder if he's keeping all the money to himself instead of helping the people paying for the warranty. Our AC has been out for almost a month. He said he would send the check to get it fixed. AC management sent him an invoice for him to approve and get our AC fixed. He still hasn't done that. Never answers calls or texts. My surgeon, who is super busy, responds faster than Ruben Rueda. It feels more like a scamming company. My children are small and have to sleep with their windows open.
