The course will provide students with the tools to sharpen their critical skills in reading, analyzing, and writing, while exploring the fundamental elements of literature--such as theme, plot, setting, characterization, and language. Students will also work on developing an appreciation for major writers and their influences. This process will also help students develop a deeper understanding of the importance of literature as both a reflection of and a contributor to the human experience. This course is a Gordon Rule writing course as defined by SB Rule 6a-10.030. The planning, organization, and writing of critical papers is covered. Anything over that amount will result in immediate loss of credit for the course. If a student misses the first day of class, they WILL BE dropped (WX), unless there is a documented medical emergency and this documentation is provided and discussed with me prior to the 1st day - NO EXCEPTIONS!!! Students who are more than 15 minutes late to a class are considered absent. Two tardies: 1-14 minutes - is considered an absence. *Student Responsibility Regarding Absences: If you are going to miss a class, you are required to email me at [email protected] PRIOR to class concerning your absence. Failure to do this on more than two occasions will result in immediate loss of credit for the course! Think of this as your academic job! An employer would not tolerate an employee not showing for work without due cause or on multiple occasions without the consequence of loss of job. Electronic Device Policy Turn off all electronic devices when you enter the room. You will be asked to leave the class if your phone makes any noise during class. Late Assignment Policy 1. Don't bother coming to class if you haven’t completed the assigned reading, written analysis or brought any assigned materials, including required readings. 2. No make-up work will be given and late work will not be accepted, except in rare cases or medical or personal emergencies (written documentation must be provided). 3. Failure to turn in one assignment will result in loss of class credit. Make-Up Exam Policy No make-up exams are given unless written medical documentation is provided by a health care professional. Withdrawal Policy This is your responsibility to complete by college deadlines. These dates are posted on the college website Other Policy There is no eating or drinking in the class Dropped or spilled foods or drinks creates a cleaning issue Academic Dishonesty Policy Plagiarism is defined as either direct copying from another essay (or online source) or paying someone to write the essay for you. Academic Dishonesty Penalty for Violation Plagiarism on any assignment will result in an immediate "F" and loss of credit for the course. Errors in documentation but with clear intent to document correctly will result in loss of points on the particular assignment as directed in the rubric for that specific assignment. Failure to use quotation marks when quoting directly from another person, whether it is a paragraph, a sentence or even a part thereof. • Similar and extended paraphrasing of another. • • • • Cheating Using unauthorized notes, study aids, or information from another student or student’s paper on an in-class examination; altering a graded work after it has been returned, then submitting the work for regrading; and allowing another person to do one’s work and to submit the work under one’s own name or otherwise not following the rules or instruction to gain an advantage. Fabrication Presenting data in a piece of work that were not gathered in accordance with guidelines defining the appropriate methods for collecting or generating data and failing to include a substantially accurate account of the method by which the data were generated or collected. Aiding and Abetting Dishonesty Providing material or information to another person with knowledge that these materials or information will be used improperly pursuant to Florida Statutes 877.17 (1). Forgery Altering documents affecting academic records; forging a signature of authorization or falsifying information on an official academic document, election form, grade report, letter of permission, petition, or any document designed to meet or exempt a student from an established College academic regulation. Classroom Etiquette and Student Behavior Guidelines Students will demonstrate respect for professors and fellow students. Behavior that is disruptive to a positive learning environment reported by the professor will result in a warning on the first instance; the second instance might result in expulsion from the course or campus. Computer Competency Component Each student will, to the satisfaction of the professor, demonstrate a fundamental understanding of basic computer operations through various professor-determined exercises and/or assignments. Final Course Grade Appeal The evaluation of academic work is the responsibility of the faculty member/instructor. The method for assigning the final course grade is established by the faculty member/instructor. Per Board Rule 6Hx-18-3.191, faculty/instructors shall communicate the grading policy of the course to their students in writing. If this policy changes during the term, students should be notified of any changes in writing. The method to determine final course grades must be given to students in a course syllabus at the beginning of the class. Mid-Term Grade Reporting Within one week after the close of the mid-term grading period, mid-term grades will be made available to all students for each class by either written notification or individual conference.
