Insurance company QBE launched the first Australian telematics product, Insurance Box, in partnership with Melbourne company NIA in 2013. Insurance Box is designed to protect drivers on the roads and to reward those who drive carefully.
A small, self-installed telematics device that plugs into your car underneath the dashboard, Insurance Box transmits data related to parameters like G-forces, cornering, accelerating and braking via satellite and mobile networks to assess driver behavior and probability of accidents.
Drivers who use insurance box also receive insights and advice via an online portal and SMS to improve their driving habits. An online dashboard gives the driver personalised feedback on how their car is driven as well as specific alerts relating to unsafe driving practices as an incentive to become a better driver.
Insurance Box helps people to become safer drivers by alerting them to dangerous habits. It can speed up responses to an accident and assist recovery if a vehicle is stolen. And above all feedback-driven improvement helps them save more on premiums. QBE Australia’s executive general manager Tim Plant said: “We are delighted to be offering Australia’s first telematics product rewarding young drivers for their safe driving. Our existing Insurance Box customers are saving up to 30% on renewal.”
