Gov. Gary Herbert issued an executive order Wednesday to temporarily suspend the enforcement of statutes for some expiring vehicle registrations.

The order stops the enforcement through May 15, in an attempt to help Utahns navigate DMV closures and appointment-only policies during the coronavirus pandemic.

The change goes into effect on Thursday.

The Utah Division of Motor Vehicles previously announced plans to reopen their lobbies by appointment-only, beginning Friday.

These changes come after dozens of cars have lined up in the drive-thru lanes of DMVs every weekday throughout the state. Some drivers have even started camping out at the DMVs overnight, just ensure they get a good place in line.

Drivers and vehicle owners are strongly encouraged to check to see if their DMV service can be completed online before attempting a visit. The following services are available online:

  • Registration renewal (through Renewal Express or an On the SPOT renewal station)
  • Change your address
  • Order license plates
  • Request a refund
  • Report a sold vehicle
  • Renew a disabled placard

If you can't find what you're looking for on the DMV site, you can talk to an agent Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. by calling 801-297-7780 or toll-free at 1-800-368-8824.
