Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What happens if I cross a Cashless Tolling facility without E-ZPass?
A. Customers without E-ZPass will have their license plates photographed as their vehicles pass under the overhead gantry. A Tolls By Mail bill for the non-discounted cash-rate toll will automatically be generated and sent to the registered owner of the vehicle by U.S. Mail on a 30-day cycle. You can pay these bills by mail, phone or in person, using a check, credit card, bank account or cash. Visit tollsbymailny.com or call 1-844-TBM-8400 (826-8400) for more information.
Q. Do I have to wait for the Tolls by Mail bill to arrive in the mail, or can I pay my tolls right away?
A. Customers who prefer not to wait for a Tolls By Mail bill to be sent to them can utilize our "Pay Toll Now" service, which allows you to open a short-term account using your license plate and credit card. Go to the Pay Toll Now website to begin the process.
Q. Is there a penalty or fee for not paying a toll bill?
A. Failure to pay a Tolls By Mail bill may result in late fees, fines, vehicle registration suspension and other enforcement actions. To check billing status for a Tolls By Mail bill, call: 1-844-TBM-8400 (826-8400).

Q. How much will I save by using E-ZPass?
A. Drivers typically save 30–50% on every toll! For crossing charges and E-ZPass savings at specific toll facilities in New York, see our Toll Savings page.
Q: How much does an E-ZPass tag cost?
A. The tag itself doesn't cost anything – but customers who choose to replenish their accounts by cash or check will pay a one-time, fully refundable $10 deposit at signup. This $10 deposit fee is waived for customers who choose automatic replenishment by credit card or bank account.
Q: Where can I get an E-ZPass?
A.That's easy. You can sign up online now at the ezpassny.com website or you can get one in person at Department of Motor Vehicles offices, American Automobile Association offices and the E-ZPass Customer Service Walk-In Centers.
Q. Can I use E-ZPass with business vehicles?
A.Yes. In fact, if your business involves taxis, trucks or any other vehicles that make trips across New York toll facilities, using E-ZPass is an incredibly smart business decision – offering time and money savings that directly affect your bottom line. See our E-ZPass for Business page to learn more.
Q. What if I need a receipt?
A.That's easy. You can view, save or print your current toll transactions anytime by logging into your account at e-zpassny.com. You can also elect to receive free monthly statements by e-mail, or bi-monthly statements by mail, with all the information you need.
Q. How can I identify if my E-ZPass was issued by the MTA?
A. If the first three digits of your tag number begin with 008, it's one of ours!
Q. What if I don't own a vehicle? Can I still get an E-ZPass?
A.Yes. Many people without cars choose to get an E-ZPass so they can save time and money when they rent or borrow cars from friends. Just call 1-800-333-TOLL (8655) for instructions
Q. What if I own more than one vehicle? Do I need E-ZPass tags for all of them?
A.You can register up to four E-ZPass tags on a single account – or share a single E-ZPass tag among multiple vehicles. Just install the extra mounting strips that come with your E-ZPass into each vehicle, and make sure that all vehicles sharing the same tag are of the same Vehicle Type ("A" for cars, SUVs and minivans, "M" for motorcycles, "P" for pickup trucks, etc.).
Q: Why do I need to register my license plate?
A.To avoid paying extra for tolls. If your E-ZPass tag is not read properly at the toll facility for some reason, cameras will photograph your license plate. If your license plate number is not registered to your E-ZPass account, you will receive a bill for the non-discounted, full-priced toll amount in the mail. But if it is registered, your E-ZPass account will automatically be charged at the normal, discounted rate.
Q. Do I need a credit card to pay for my account?
A. No. There are many different payment options, depending on what works best for you. You can pay electronically at e-zpassny.com with a credit card, debit card or bank account. You can pay with cash using your Reload Card or in person at any E-ZPass Customer Service Walk-In Center. Or you can mail a check or money order (made out to MTA B&T E-ZPass) to:
						E-ZPass Customer Service Center
						P.O. Box 15185
						Albany, NY 12212-5185

And remember: if you link your credit card, debit card or bank account information to your E-ZPass account, you won't have to think about making payments, because your account will automatically be replenished whenever the balance gets too low.
Q. Can I wait to pay for my trips until after I take them?
A.Yes. Just choose the Pay Per Trip payment plan when signing up, or by logging into your existing account. Pay Per Trip links your E-ZPass directly to your checking account, using it to pay only for the E-ZPass tolls you use, only on the days you use them.
Q: Can I make one-time payments?
A. Yes. Just login to your E-ZPass account, go to Update Personal Information, select One-Time Payment, and complete the web form. You can also make a one-time payment by calling E-ZPass Customer Service at 1-800-333- TOLL(8655), and following the menu options on the voice response system.
Q. How can I view my account history?
A.You can always check your account status by calling 1-800-333-TOLL (8655). You can view, save or print your current toll transaction and payment information anytime by logging into your account at e-zpassny.com. And you can elect to receive free monthly statements by e-mail, or bi-monthly statements by mail.
Q. Can I mount my E-ZPass somewhere other than the windshield?
A. No, sorry. Unless your E-ZPass is mounted exactly as shown, it may not be read by our antenna. If this happens, cameras will photograph your license plate, and the registered owner of your vehicle will receive a Tolls By Mail bill.
Q. What happens if my account balance reaches zero?
A.>If your E-ZPass account is linked to a valid credit card, debit card or bank account, you won't have to worry about your account running out of money because it will automatically be replenished whenever the balance gets too low.
Q. Will my name and address be shared with other mailing lists?
A.No. We respect the privacy of our customers and will not make the list of E-ZPass customers available to anyone.
Q. What if I just don't want to get an E-ZPass?
A.All motorists are required to pay their tolls by using either E-ZPass or the Tolls By Mail program. If you use a toll facility without an E-ZPass, cameras will photograph your license plate, and a bill for the non-discounted, full-priced toll amount will be sent to the registered owner of your vehicle. So if you want to avoid the hassle of remembering to pay toll bills after the fact, plus save 30–50% on every toll, E-ZPass is definitely your best option.
Q. What if I have other questions?
A. Give us a call at 1-800-333-TOLL (8655), visit the E-ZPass New York website (www.e-zpassny.com) or speak to someone in person at an E-ZPass Customer Service Walk-In Center
Q. What is Cashless Tolling?
A.Cashless (or Open Road) Tolling is the collection of tolls from motorists who maintain posted speed limits on roads without any toll barriers, tollbooths or dedicated toll lanes. Drivers cross under a roadway gantry equipped with sensors and cameras to charge tolls via E-ZPass and Tolls By Mail, detecting classes of vehicles and applying the correct charge.
Q. When will MTA Bridges and Tunnels change to Cashless Tolling?
A.The Henry Hudson Bridge converted to Cashless Tolling in November 2012. The other MTA Bridges and Tunnels facilities converted to cashless in 2017. Queens Midtown and Hugh L. Carey Tunnels converted in January 2017, the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial and Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridges in June, the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge in August, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in July, and the Throgs Neck and Bronx-Whitestone Bridges in September.
Q. Why is MTA changing to a Cashless Tolling system?
A.The chief benefit of this state-of-the-art method of toll collection is that drivers no longer have to stop or slow down to wait and pay a toll, or for the gate-arm to rise in the toll lane. Cashless tolling allows more vehicles to proceed over a bridge or through a tunnel with greater efficiency and less delay.  Cashless tolling is also better for the environment because it reduces congestion from idling vehicles and toll lane queues. Safety is improved since there is no need for drivers to weave, merge or cross over lanes in order to choose the correct toll payment lane.
