Welcome to the 2013 NSW Seniors Directory. 

2013 is a landmark year for the NSW Seniors Card 

as it celebrates its 21st birthday. 

Introduced by the NSW Government in 1992, the 

NSW Seniors Card program sought to encourage 

a happy and active retirement for older members of 

the community. As a program that’s been increasingly 

popular amongst seniors, it now forms a vital platform 

within the NSW Ageing Strategy, which embraces a 

vision for a healthy, vibrant, active ageing population. 

With a membership base in excess of a million card 

holders, the number of seniors joining the program 

continues to grow. This means more businesses want to be part of the picture, giving seniors 

more choice and better value options. In 2013 the Seniors Card program has more than 

2000 NSW participating businesses. 

All Australian State and Territories now have a Seniors Card program. Many interstate businesses 

that partner with the program also accept other state’s Seniors Cards. A reciprocal agreement 

also exists with New Zealand, where many of the participating businesses in the NZ SuperGold 

Card program also accept Seniors Card.

About the Office for Ageing 

“NSW’s population is ageing. 

By 2050 the number of people aged 

65 and over will more than double.” 

NSW Ageing Strategy July 2012 

The Government’s vision for ageing is that 

people in NSW experience the benefits 

of living longer. More people will enjoy 

later life if: 

• Seniors lead active and rewarding 

lives and are valued members of 

the community 

• Adults make decisions that support 

their independence and wellbeing 

later in life 

• NSW responds effectively to the 

challenges and opportunities of 

population ageing. 

Today, people who reach the age of 65 have 

the opportunity to enjoy more years of 

healthy, active living than any generation 

before them. Active living means people 

are more likely to maintain good health 

and wellbeing for longer. People in the 

middle of their lives, often their forties and 

fifties, can also enjoy longer lives and the 

decisions they make directly affect their 

later years. 

Population ageing is creating social and 

economic opportunities and challenges. 

Older people are a source of knowledge 

and expertise and a powerful economic 

force. NSW needs to respond to increased 

demand on government services, 

particularly in the health system and 

our success will in part depend on how 

well we respond to the opportunities 

and challenges of an ageing population. 

The NSW Ageing Strategy is a whole of 

government and a whole of community 

strategy which supports individuals to take 

responsibility for their futures and commits 

government to recognise and remove 

barriers to continued participation. 

Who is eligible? 

Applicants must sign a statutory declaration 

that they are: 

• 60 years of age or over; and 

• a permanent resident of NSW; and 

• working no more than 20 paid hours 

per week.

The NSW Seniors Directory is a “go to” 

reference guide for seniors containing 

information on consumer rights, financial 

and legal issues, and an array of discounts 

and offers made available by participating 

businesses to Seniors Card holders. There are 

five 2013 regional directories: 

• Sydney & Surrounds 

• Central Coast & Hunter 

• Southern NSW 

• Northern NSW 

• Western NSW.

Getting value from your card 

The best way to get value from your Seniors 

Card is to use the card as often as you can. 

Keep the Seniors Directory handy whether 

you are at home or out so that you can readily 

find all those local participating businesses 

that offer savings whenever and whatever you 

happen to be doing. 

Seniors Card shopping tips 

• Before purchasing from a listed business, 

you should decide whether the product 

or service is of good quality, whether 

it is suitable for your needs, and if 

independent legal, financial or medical 

advice should be sought. 

• Look for the ‘Seniors Card welcome here’ 

sign (see below), which is displayed by 

many participating businesses. 

• Ask for the normal quoted price before 

asking for the Seniors Card discount. 

• Ask for the Seniors Card discount. 

• Present your Seniors Card at the time of 

booking or prior to making a payment. 

Most participating businesses will not give 

a Seniors Card discount once a transaction 

or service has been completed. 

• Shop around and compare prices before 

making a purchase – Seniors Card does 

not guarantee the best price. Your item 

may be cheaper elsewhere. 

• If you shop at a participating business 

which does not display a ‘Seniors 

Card Welcome Here’ sign feel free to 

recommend to the business that Seniors 

Card are happy to provide a sign such 

that more seniors will be encouraged to 

make purchases. 

• If you know of a business that’s keen to 

increase sales, encourage them to join the 

Seniors Card program as a participating 

business. Get them to call 1300 364 758 or 

direct them to the Seniors Card website

The discount offers listed in this Directory are 

valid to 30 November 2013, unless otherwise 

indicated. Seniors Card discounts cannot 

be used in conjunction with any other offer 

(unless otherwise stated). The discounts 

listed in this directory apply only to Seniors 

Card members. They do not apply to family 

members or friends. 

A participating business can withdraw from 

the program at any time and therefore is 

not required to provide a listed discount. 

If the offer continues to be listed on the 

Seniors Card website, then please contact 

the Seniors Card information centre at 

1300 364 758 and advise them that the offer 

is no longer available. Seniors Card will then 

contact the participating business to ensure 

that listings are always kept up to date.

Public transport concessions 

Sydney Metropolitan Area & 

Outer Metropolitan Areas 

Seniors Card holders are entitled to a number 

of public transport concessions in NSW. 

$2.50 Pensioner Excursion Ticket (PET): 

is available to Seniors Card holders for all 

day, multi-modal travel within the greater 

metropolitan area on the following services: 

• CityRail, within an area bounded by 

Dungog, Scone, Bathurst, Goulburn, 

and Bomaderry 

• The four AirportLink stations, including 

the domestic and international airport 

stations (an additional concession 

Gate Access Fee applies) 

• Local bus services (government and 

private), within the metropolitan and 

outer metropolitan bus contract areas 

bounded by Port Stephens, Maitland, 

Lithgow and Kiama 

• Sydney Ferries and Newcastle Ferries 

• Light rail. The PET is not sold on board 

and must be purchased before boarding 

a light rail service. Information on where 

to purchase PETs is available from 

Transport Info by calling 131 500 or at 

www.131500.info. 

The PET is NOT available for use on: 

• Ferry services other than Sydney Ferries 

services, except for local residents, registered 

with the operator, who may use a PET on 

certain ferry services to access the broader 

metropolitan and outer-metropolitan 

public transport network 

• Special or premium services, like cruises or 

tourist services 

• Special Event bus services, such as to 

Moore Park for sporting events (however 

the PET can be used on the regular route 

services to the same destination) 

• Monorail services. 

Half fare concession tickets: 

Seniors Card holders are entitled to purchase 

half-fare concession MyZone tickets, where 

that represents a better value for money 

option. Information on where to purchase 

MyZone tickets is available from Transport 

Info by calling 131500 or at www.131500.info 

Rural and Regional Areas 

$2.50 Regional Excursion Daily (RED) 

tickets provide for all-day travel on local bus 

services (excluding school services) in rural 

and regional areas. In areas where more than 

one operator provides services within the local 

network, the RED ticket will enable transfers 

between bus services without payment of an 

additional fare. 

RED is not available for use on bus services 

within the Sydney metropolitan/outer 

metropolitan areas or on CountryLink 

rail and coach services. RED can be used 

on local bus services that commence in 

a rural and regional area and extend into 

the metropolitan or outer metropolitan 

areas. However, a metropolitan PET (or 

half fare ticket) must be purchased for any 

further travel on metropolitan rail, bus and 

government ferry services. 

The $2.50 CountryLink Pensioner Excursion 

(CPE) ticket: provides for extensive one way 

local and regional travel on CountryLink rail 

and coach services in regional areas outside 

of CityRail’s Sydney and Newcastle areas 

(bounded by Nowra, Moss Vale, Lithgow, 

Muswellbrook, Dungog, Karuah and Booral). 

To ensure the ongoing sustainability of 

CountryLink services, ticketing arrangements 

do not allow for CPE tickets to be combined 

with another CountryLink or CityRail ticket to 

gain a cheaper fare on the same service/trip. 

CPE tickets need to be booked, and bookings 

can be made up to 7 days in advance. 


Public transport concessions

The CPE is designed to promote travel 

within country NSW and is not available for 

travel into metropolitan areas or interstate. 

It therefore does not cover travel to or from 

country areas into or out of the CityRail area 

(bounded by Nowra, Moss Vale, Lithgow, 

Muswellbrook, Dungog, Karuah and Booral) 

and is not available for travel into Sydney, 

Newcastle or Wollongong and related 

suburbs. An exception is made for passengers 

traveling between Mount Victoria station and 

coach stops at Little Hartley, Hartley, Good 

Forest, Hampton and Oberon. 

Similarly, the CPE is not available for use on 

services to/from the interstate locations of 

Wangaratta, Benalla, Melbourne, Beenleigh, 

Surfers Paradise, Robina, Burleigh Heads and 

Palm Beach. 

Interstate travel: NSW Seniors card holders 

can use their NSW card when travelling 

interstate to obtain the concessions available 

to Seniors in that State/Territory. Similarly, 

interstate card holders can obtain the same 

concessions as NSW card holders when 

visiting NSW. 

Pensioners-only free rail travel: Seniors who 

are also NSW pensioners can use their free 

travel entitlements on CountryLink economy 

services without payment of a booking fee. 

A booking fee of 15% of the fare or a minimum 

of $10 still applies when upgrading to first class

Consumer information from NSW Fair Trading 

If you are thinking of taking a holiday, travel agents can be a useful source of advice on 

itineraries, passports, visas and packaged holidays for individuals or groups. It is important, 

however, that you shop around for the best deal. 

A travel agent is required to hold a travel 

agent licence and must include their licence 

number on all print advertising. 

Remember, a deposit does not mean the 

price of the trip is fixed. If prices increase, 

you may be required to pay the increase. 

You should deal with a licensed travel agent 

in order to claim compensation in the event 

of the travel agency’s collapse. To check if the 

travel agent you are dealing with is licensed 

call Fair Trading on 13 32 20. 

It is always wise to take out travel insurance, 

which can cover you for the loss of a deposit 

or cancellation fees, medical expenses, 

personal liability, loss or theft of baggage and 

travel documents. However, shop around as 

not all insurers offer the same conditions. 

Travel Compensation Fund 

All licensed travel agents in Australia except 

those in the Northern Territory are required to 

participate in the Travel Compensation Fund 

(TCF), which monitors their financial viability. 

The TCF compensates people who have 

suffered financial loss due to travel agents not 

passing over monies received for transport 

or accommodation to the respective airlines 

or hotels. The TCF does not compensate 

for loss in respect to amounts of money 

paid directly to airlines and hotels for travel 

and accommodation. 

Deposits, cancellations 

and pre‐payments 

If you leave a deposit with a travel agent, 

you should check whether it is refundable, 

or if a percentage may be kept to cover the 

agent’s costs.

• comply with any express warranty 

• have repair facilities and spare parts

To ensure your home meets your changing needs, you may consider some renovations. 

Knowing important information regarding contracts, deposits, insurance, and employing 

licensed builders and tradespeople will help you protect your home when renovating. 

Why not get some ideas from magazines and 

display centres? When confident of what you 

want get quotes from at least three builders 

or tradespeople. Ask for references from 

their clients. An occupational therapist can 

also advise you about suitable ‘age friendly’ 

modifications you could carry out. 

Licensed builders and 

tradespeople 

For work that will cost over $1,000 (labour 

and materials) all builders and tradespeople 

involved must be licensed by Fair Trading. 

Ask for their licence number, call Fair Trading 

or visit www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au to 

check if their licence is valid and appropriate 

for your work. 

Consumer tip 

All specialist tradespeople doing 

electrical wiring, plumbing, draining, 

gasfitting, or air-conditioning work 

must be licensed regardless of the 

value of the work. You can check if 

a tradesperson is properly licensed 

at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or 

telephone 13 32 20. 

Contracts 

If the work on your home costs over $1,000 

the builder or tradesperson must give you a 

written contract. Before you sign a contract 

worth more than $5,000, the contractor is 

required to give you Fair Trading’s Consumer 

building guide which contains important 

consumer information about home building 

and renovation work. 

For contracts over $20,000 (labour and 

materials) there is a cooling-off period of 

5 business days during which you can cancel 

the contract. 

Home warranty insurance 

Home warranty insurance covers you for loss 

from defective or incomplete work if the 

builder or tradesperson has disappeared, 

died or become insolvent. Work over $20,000 

in value must have home warranty insurance. 

The contractor must give you a certificate of 

this insurance before taking any deposit or 

starting any work. 

Deposits 

The contractor must not request more than 

a 5% deposit for contracts over $20,000 or 

more than a 10% deposit for contracts worth 

$20,000 or less. 

Progress payments 

Progress payments can be set out in your 

contract. Do not pay more than what is set 

out in the contract at each progress point. 

If progress payments are not required under 

the contract, you shouldn’t pay anything 

before the job is completed

Statutory warranties 

Even if they are not written into the contract 

you sign, the law says that statutory 

warranties still apply to work you get done on 

your home. Statutory warranties are in effect 

for 6 years for structural defects and 2 years 

for non-structural defects, commencing from 

the date when the work was completed. 

The key aspects of the warranties are: 

• The work will be done in a proper and 

workmanlike manner and in compliance 

with the plans and specifications in 

the contract 

• All materials supplied will be new unless 

specified otherwise and suitable for the 

purpose for which they are used 

• The work will be done with due diligence, 

within the time stated in the contract, 

or otherwise in a reasonable time. 

Subsequent buyers of a property are also 

entitled to the benefit of the statutory 

warranties that apply to any residential 

building work that was done. 

Dispute resolution 

There is a simple and effective dispute 

resolution process that home owners are 

encouraged to follow. Talking with your 

contractor about any problems that arise is 

the first step. Always write to them to confirm 

what was discussed and agreed and keep a 

copy for your records. If the problem remains 

unresolved, contact Fair Trading to find out 

your options.

Most people want to buy a sound vehicle at the best possible price. If you are thinking 

of buying a car, it is worth following a few simple steps to avoid potential problems. 

When purchasing a used car, it is important to 

inspect it thoroughly. An inspection can help 

you identify problems and assess its value 

more accurately. It can also provide some 

leverage to negotiate a lower sale price.

Buying a car from a licensed dealer 

Buying a car from a licensed motor vehicle 

dealership has some advantages. Unlike 

buying privately, the dealer must guarantee 

that there is no money owing on the vehicle. 

The dealer is also obliged by law to provide 

a 3-month warranty on a used vehicle that is 

less than 10 years old and has travelled less 

than 160,000 km. Dealers often allow you to 

trade in your old vehicle. However, you may 

get more if you sell it privately. 

Buying a car privately 

Buying a vehicle from a private owner 

involves relying on your own judgment and 

knowledge. You can arrange for a vehicle 

inspection at your own cost but there are 

no statutory warranties. You will also be 

responsible for making sure that the vehicle 

does not have money owing on it. Doing a 

Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) 

check will help you ascertain this. Always ask 

the seller for, and note down, the information 

listed below: 

• the current certificate of registration 

• a Pink Slip which is no more than 42 days 

old (unless the vehicle was registered in 

the last 42 days) 

• proof that the person selling the vehicle 

is the owner eg. a sales receipt or driver’s 

licence to help identify the seller 

• the registration number 

• the engine number 

• the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) 

or chassis number.

Ensure that the information shown in 

the paperwork matches what is on the 

actual vehicle.

Purchase a PPSR certificate. A clear 

PPSR certificate will protect you against 

repossession for undisclosed debts on the car. 

Never rely on the seller’s PPSR certificate – 

always buy your own. 

Be suspicious if the seller wants to meet in a 

public place instead of their house. Beware of 

vehicles offered for sale well below the market 

price – they may have something wrong with 

them mechanically or have been rebirthed. 

Insist on paying the seller by bank cheque 

and never by cash.

• check they are licensed 

• get a quote in writing 

• ask to be contacted first if additional 

work needs to be done 

• request an itemised account.

Avoiding scams 


Research shows 1 in 20 Australians falls victim to scams. Scammers regard seniors as easy 

targets. Familiarise yourself with the common scams described here so that you are better 

equipped to identify scammers and their offers. 

Prizes, sweepstakes and 

overseas lottery scams 

These scams may be delivered to you 

in person, over the telephone, through 

the mail or by email. To claim the prize, 

you will be asked to send money as a 

‘processing or administration fee’ or give 

personal information. 

If you are told you’ve won a lottery or 

competition that you are not sure you 

entered, the best thing to do is to say ‘no’. 

Hang up the phone, delete the email or 

throw away the letter. Never send money or 

give banking details to anybody you are not 

completely sure of. 

Identity theft 

Identity theft is fraud where criminals steal 

and use personal identifying information 

of an actual person, living or dead. Having 

your identity stolen can be financially and 

emotionally devastating. 

Your identity can be stolen in many ways – 

you may lose your wallet, your home may be 

burgled, your mail may be stolen or diverted, 

your rubbish may be searched for bills or 

your credit card or bank details skimmed 

when you make a purchase or use an ATM. 

Your entire identity may be then assumed by 

another person to open bank accounts, take 

out loans and conduct illegal business under 

your name. 

Health and medical scams 

These scams try to make money by exploiting 

vulnerable people who have a medical 

condition or who are worried about their 

health by offering solutions or instant cures 

where none exist or making exaggerated 

claims about a health product. Health and 

medical scams can end up costing you a lot of 

money and some might even be dangerous 

for your health. 

If you have any doubts about a product 

that someone is trying to sell you, discuss 

it first with your doctor or contact the 

Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) 

or the Health Care Complaints Commission 

for more information. 

Consumer tip 

Be wary of any letter or invitation that 

tells you to take quick action or the offer 

will end. Take your time to consider the 

benefits of what’s on offer. 

Real estate and investment scams 

Property scams that tempt investors into 

risky ventures often involve high pressure 

investment seminars and property marketing 

schemes. Promises of ‘risk-free investment’, 

‘be a millionaire in 3 years’ and ‘get rich-quick’ 

have tempted many Australians to invest in 

high risk schemes that return very little or 

nothing at all.

Advance fee scams 

These scams are also called Nigerian scams 

and usually start with an email or letter that 

offers you a share in a large sum of money 

that they want to transfer out of their country. 

They may tell you about money trapped 

in central banks during civil wars or coups, 

or massive inheritances that are difficult to 

access because of government restrictions or 

taxes in the scammer’s country. 

You are then asked to give your bank account 

details to help them transfer the money and 

to pay fees, charges or taxes to release or 

transfer the money from their country to your 

bank. These ‘fees’ may start as quite small 

amounts. If paid, the scammer makes up new 

fees that require payment before you can 

receive your ‘reward’. 

Dating and romance scams 

Some scammers set up fake profiles on 

genuine internet dating sites to exploit 

your romantic and compassionate side. The 

scammers will go to great lengths to gain your 

interest and trust, such as sharing personal 

information and even sending you gifts. They 

may take months to build what seems like the 

romance of a lifetime and pretend to book 

flights to visit you, but never actually come. 

Once they have gained your trust they may 

claim to suffer from financial hardship or 

having to pay medical bills for a sick relative 

and ask you for money, gifts or your bank/ 

credit card details. Be wary and always 

consider the possibility that the approach may

The Financial Information Service (FIS) is a free education and information service from 

the Australian Government Department of Human Services available to everyone in 

the community.

Planning for a funeral 



If a family member or friend dies and you are arranging their funeral, it is important that 

you know what to do. 

The person arranging the funeral is financially 

responsible for it and is the only person who 

can make arrangements with the crematorium 

or cemetery, including signing all burial or 

cremation permits. 

You can also make your own arrangements for 

your funeral and choose what you want rather 

than leaving this to others. 

Paying for the funeral 

Before you sign an agreement for a funeral 

find out what money is available to pay 

the costs and discuss payment options and 

sources of funds with the funeral director. 

Money to pay for a funeral may come from: 

• a funeral fund the deceased person 

may have paid into 

• the estate (assets of the deceased person) 

– check with the bank if they will 

allow money in the deceased person’s 

bank account to be used to pay for 

funeral expenses 

• a pre-paid benefit or investment scheme, 

superannuation fund or life insurance 

• the Commonwealth Department of 

Veterans’ Affairs for some returned 

service people – call 13 32 54 

• a health fund, trade union, pensioner 

association or other type of club that 

they belonged to 

• Centrelink – contact them on 

13 23 00 to check your eligibility for 

bereavement assistance. 

If there is no money to fund the funeral from 

the estate, family or friends, contact the public 

health unit of your local area health service. 

Finding a funeral director 

The documents of the deceased may have 

instructions to use a particular funeral 

director. If not, you will need to select one. 

It makes sense to find a funeral director 

you are comfortable with that offers their 

services at a reasonable price. Friends or 

relatives may be able to recommend a funeral 

director. Funeral directors usually provide the 

following services: 

• registration of the death, obtaining 

certificates or permits 

• coordination between clergy 

(or funeral celebrant) and the cemetery 

or crematorium 

• preparation of the body 

• supply of coffin or casket 

• transport such as a hearse or special cars 

• payment of fees on your behalf to the 

cemetery or crematorium or for flowers 

• placing notices in newspapers. 

All NSW funeral directors must by law provide 

you with an itemised quote that makes it 

easier for you to compare their services

A property can be sold by a real estate agent or by the owner. It is important to get advice from 

a solicitor or licensed conveyancer about the proposed sale. A carefully prepared contract needs

Choosing a real estate agent 

If you decide to use an agent, make sure they

Agent’s fees for selling a property are open 

for negotiation, but generally vary from 

2.5% to 4% of the sale price. A key issue 

in fee negotiations is the level of service 

being offered, such as the number of open 

house inspections, and form and frequency
