Program Description:

THE PROGRAMKoc University

Drexel University, in partnership with Koç University, offers an exchange program available to students of ALL majors. Spend a term studying in Turkey taking courses in English.  The Koç exchange program completely immerses Drexel students into Turkish education and culture as you take classes with the local Turkish and international students.

Koç University is located in Istanbul, a unique transcontinental city in Eurasia, straddling the Boshporus strait between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Its commercial and historical center lies on the European side and about a third of its population lives on the Asian side.  Istanbul is one of the world's most populous cities and ranks as world's 5th-largest city proper and the largest European city.

For more information about Koç University check out the Incoming Students website

Course Catalog: view of all Koc's course offerings by semester.

Course Equivalents: This spreadsheet is a historical list of pre-approved courses Drexel students have taken at Koç before.  Students can choose to take courses from this list, but there is no guarantee that these courses will be offered in the future.

Course Approvals: Students will need to get courses approved by the appropriate department for each course they plan to take if the course is not on the course equivalency spreadsheet (linked above).  For example, if you want to take a course at the University abroad for Drexel credit, its equivalent must be pre-approved by the appropriate department at Drexel.

Grading:  Students are taught and graded by Turkish faculty at Koç University. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. The goal is to be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel.  You will be a full-time student at both Koç University and Drexel.

Program Calendar

Koç is a semester based school. Students should prepare to make adjustments and be flexible in fitting this program into their Drexel schedule. Due to the need for cycle and program changes the study abroad office urges you to begin planning 12-18 months in advance

Fall semester: September - early January  (Drexel Fall term)

*Students will have to arrange to leave Spring/Summer Co-op early and arrange with professors to take Koç final exams early (early exams are at the discretion of individual faculty members. Neither Drexel nor Koç can guarantee that all professors will allow this).

Spring semester: early February - May       (Drexel Winter Term)
*Students will have to arrange to leave Winter co-op early. Students would then have a one month break before returning to Drexel in June for summer term classes. During this month students could return to their co-op, travel in Turkey or elsewhere, or return to the United States.

THE EXPERIENCE

Exciting events start as soon as you arrive at Koç. During your orientation you will receive your Smart Card for access into places such as the library, and also course materials from your advisor. The following day, you will get a free tour of Istanbul visiting sites such as the Hagia Sophia, and the Basilica Cistern!  Koç has a variety of extracurricular activities and clubs to make your stay in Turkey a great one.

Housing options:  Koç University dormitories have a capacity of nearly 2500 students. On-campus housing is guaranteed for all exchange students. Student housing applications are processed by Dormitory Management. (yurt@ku.edu.tr)

You will be given several choices regarding dormitory arrangements prior to your arrival. You will have the option of choosing your room type through the online dormitory application form which includes housing on Main and West Campus.

On-campus housing is available in single, double, triple and quadruple rooms. Internet, cable-TV and phone-services are available in each room. There are twelve laundry rooms and five kitchens in seventeen dorm buildings. At the ground floor of each building, there are computer rooms accessible to all students. In each dorm building, 7 to 10 students live on the same floor. Rooms include: refrigerator, bed, closet, desk, chair, bed stand, light, pillow and blanket. Students must bring their own towel, pillow case and sheets.

Please note that exchange students will be placed with Turkish roommates.

Visa: U.S. citizens are required to obtain a student visa for programs in Turkey. Non-U.S. citizens should contact the Turkish Consulate to find out if a visa is required for Turkey. The process of applying for your student visa may take 6-8 weeks, so students should plan ahead. Accepted students should contact the Turkish Consulate for further assistance.

COST & FINANCIAL AID

This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus all of your Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during your term abroad. For program costs, please consult the budget sheet.

Students who receive Federal Work Study should consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position (after acceptance).

To seek additional funding, review the Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to the Financial Aid Office to see if additional funding may be available.
