Tesco has issued a warning to customers who risk being locked out of their Clubcard accounts this month.

It comes as the supermarket introduces a new authentication method, as reported by Kent Live.

This will secure accounts and means customers won't have to remember their card number in the future.

The number was typically required to verify and log into accounts - though the policy is now set to change.

Customers will instead be able to use a one-time passcode, which will be sent to their mobile number.

The new approach however means that some may now be locked out of their accounts this month.

This is because out of date information on their account could mean the code is sent to the wrong number.

A warning has now been issued over this possibilty in an email sent to customers by Tesco earlier this week.

In the email, a spokesperson for the supermarket warned shoppers to update their details immediately.

They acknowledged that it's "hard to remember" a Clubcard number and that security is a priority.

The spokesperson further explained: "So we’re adding a safe and easy way to authenticate your account with a one-time passcode sent to your mobile number."

"To make sure you can always access your Tesco account, please ensure your mobile number is up to date."

This can be done by heading to the personal details page - and you'll need your Clubcard to log in for now.

Tesco however has assured that "nothing else is changing" with accounts and "data will remain secure."

This latest change comes after the supermarket extended its Clubcard voucher amid the pandemic.

Customers with vouchers that expired in May have subsequently been given a six month extension.

It means that any which had been due to expire on May 31 are now valid until November 30.
