One of the problems with “health information” is that it starts with a hypothesis, like aspirin is good to prevent blood clots and therefor good to prevent heart attacks! Sometimes those hypothesis are tested (like for new medications) and sometimes it takes a really long time for someone to check if common sense is right or not. It’s further complicated by pharma wanting to make money and obscuring the actual details by not publishing what they don’t want out there, or by relying on surrogate outcomes, not what we really care about.I think that learning how to evaluate studies for what’s good, what’s junk and what’s a blatant lie would be great. Only his closest acquaintances know him well enough to see past his reserved and tactiurn self and see his attraction to Elizabeth. Not only does the instigator need to know Darcy well, he or she must be on good enough terms with Lady Catherine to approach her with the information. One may think that Lady Catherine figured it out and used the "someone told me" ploy. I, however, doubt Lady Cathine's perceptiveness in this matter. As a high-minded, pompous windbag, Lady Catherine only sees what she wants to see. For example, when she talks to Elizabeth at the Bennet's home, she repeats, "It's impossible!" The idea that a man like Darcy could ever be attracted to a woman like Elizabeth is simply inconcievable. So, I doubt Lady Catherine could come to the realization of Darcy and elizabeth's relationship without outside influence.Who had the knowledge, opportunity and motive for telling Lady Catherine?There are three likely candidates, with varying degrees of likielhood: Colonel Fitzwilliam, Caroline Bingley or Georgiana Darcy. [1]Suspect #1: Colonel Fitzwilliam.He had the opportunity, means, but perhaps no motive. Colonel Fitzwilliam came with Darcy to Rosings, spending a considerable amount of time with both parties. Unlike Lady Catherine, Colonel Fitzwilliam carries no prejudice against the idea that any man of means could be attracted to Elizabeth Bennet. In fact, he may fancy her a bit himself. As one of Darcy's closest relatives, Colonel Fitzwilliam knows Darcy well enough to know when his behavior has changed. Colonel Fitzwilliam could have put two and two together and figured that Darcy had a bit of a crush on Elizabeth.Not only does Colonel Fitzwilliam know about Darcy's affection, but he has a relationship with Lady Catherine. Their familial relationship is close enough so that Lady Catherine would give credence to Fitzwilliam's words.But why? I can't see a clear reason why Colonel Fitzwilliam would go out of his way to tell Lady Catherine. One possibility is that Fitzwilliam holds more rigid ideas of proper marriages than we realized and wanted to warn Lady Catherine. Moreover, the timing doesn't make sense. The most immediate threat to Darcy's reputation (from Elizabeth) in the Colonel's presence was during Rosings Why then? Thus, i doubt it was Colonel Fitzwilliam. Suspect #2: Caroline BingleyShe had motives up to her ears, but perhaps not the means.When Elizabeth left Pemberley, she nagged Darcy into admitting that he thought that Elizabeth was "the best thing since sliced bread." Darcy's admission was a blow to Caroline's brittle ego. As a vindicative spiteful woman, I see her running to Lady Catherine as a last attempt to separate Darcy and Elizabeth.Still, Caroline and Lady Catherine have no known connectionn. Lady Catherine's social ranking makes it difficult for Caroline, an unknown, to approach her. One possibility is that Caroline told someone and then that someone told someone else who told Lady Catherine. This possibility leaves me skeptical. As much of a windbag that Lady Catherine is, she's still not easily swayed by rumors. I feel like there needs to be more weight to the information for Lady Catherine to go all the way to Elizabeth's home to confront her.I'd put Caroline down as the second least likely suspect.Suspect #3: Georgiana DarcyShe had the knowledge andt he means. The question remains, why?Darcy being Darcy, his recommendation of Elizabeth to Georgiana probably tipped her off on his affection. She may be shy, but she's no fool. I'm sure that by the time Elizabeth left Pemberley, Georgiana had her bridesmaid's dress picked out. Georgiana is also Lady Catherine's niece and according to Lady Catherine, quite close to her. (But we can't take Lady Catherine's word as gospel for anything.) Nevertheless, Georgiana had the means and Lady Catherine would listen to her.As for the motive, who ever said that the motive had to be nefarious? Perhaps Georgiana let it slip out in a letter or in conversation with Lady Catherine. Being young, Georgiana may have been unaware of Lady Catherine's disapproval of Elizabeth. Georgiana may have been overcome with excitement that her brother had finally found someone that he liked and spilled the milk.Also, the timing fits. Lady Catherine came to see Elizabeth in a hurry, which means that she had just heard from someone about the scandal. Georgiana could have sent her a letter after Elizabeth's visit or went to Rosings during that time period. Oops?I'd say that the most likely suspect is Georgiana Darcy since she had the knowledge, means and motive. Of course, this could also just be a small plot hole. (I forgive you Jane!)_________[1]: Charlotte Lucas could be another suspect, but I doubt she'd want to tell Lady Catherine. Charlotte, by all accounts, is a reasonable, observant woman who keeps her thoughts to herself.  Also, I don't think Lady Catherine would give her opinion much credit (wrongly so).
