Website Logon Caught in an Infinate Loop
I have a Dell 531s Inspiron desktop computer. It is running preinstalled Vista Home Premium 32 bit; IE 8 and Norton 360.
On some, but not all, websites I cannot logon.
I enter my username and password and press Logon - but I keep being looped back to the logon screen. Sometimes the error msg is " Your session has timed out. Log in again." or "Invalid user name and/or password." I have checked my logon info and it is correct.
Oddly enough, on certain sites (e.g., WildBlue.net, my Internet Provider) I can logon through "My Account," but not through the "Customer Portal." Once logged on to the website I still get looped if I try to logon to the "Home Page/Customer Portal."
It seems to happen more often on (small ?) sites like Mercola.com, Lowes.com, WildBlue.net.... I can sign on to major websites like Amazon, eBay, PayPal, CitiCard, Discover, Wells Fargo, Kaiser.... just fine.
For a long time I thought the glitch was in the website itself. Now, after a number of website managers have tried without success to recreate the error, I suspect the glitch is in in my computer.
Help please - I have spent many hours searching and trying to fix this glitch - any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cazadero,
Try scanning for Malware? Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware update it and do a quick scan.
Some Web sites may not behave as expected in Internet Explorer
How to reset Internet Explorer settings

Try running ccleaner and delete any browsing history in your browser
Internet Explorer: Select Tools (icon top right) > Internet Options > Delete Browsing History (tick all the boxes and press delete)
Google Chrome: Tools (icon top right) > Options > Under the Bonnet > Clear Browsing Data (from the Start of Time)

I don't suspect your PC, the reason being if it's corrupting what you are sending it would be doing it on all, not just selected sites.
One suggestion, upgrade to I.E.9 and see if that makes a difference. I.E.9 is more secure and the "current version".

I deleted my browsing history and it did not help.
Also ran ccleaner without results. I did not it remove every registery it found. I'll run it again and let it do a complete cleaning.
Thank you so much for your help. I'm afraid I might do something wrong doing a clean install of Vista and really foul up my computer. I will try the Vista Repair option first.
But first, I'm going to try to log on to some of my looping sites from a friend's computer tomorrow. I'll let you know what happens,

Thank you for your suggestions. I will try IE9 again ( I hope it's improved since it first came out - I tried it and went back to IE8 ).
I'm going to try to log on to some of my looping sites from a friend's computer tomorrow. If I can't get in, then it must be the site itself - not my computer. I'll let you know what happens.

I don't support the use of so called "registry cleaners" because they can aggravate a situation and take steps we are many times not manually aware of.
It is better not to resort to such programs if you don't know what is happening with the proposed fix and the registry.
Otherwise, a change to the registry can make a system unbootable by one mistake.
Here are some good discussions:

If you absolutely must use a registry cleaner, always backup the registry first:

To use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, please download the FREE version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Alternate link: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found
Back at the main Scanner screen:
Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,
you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine.
If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer),
they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM.
Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.
**If you need to re-install MBAM but encounter issue in re-installing, try using the MBAM Cleanup Utility by downloading it from HERE

I followed the link " Some Web sites may not behave as expected in Internet Explorer " from Pudgy One and was able to solve the mystery - I was the villain !
WildBlue.net account information is on the WildBlue site but the home page is powered by Google even though I reach it by going to WildBlue.net. I had disabled cookies for Google.com. When I enabled cookies for Google.com I couild sign in to my home page just fine. Also the other sites work fine with cookies enabled.
I had my Privacy setting the highest so it rejected lots of cookies on its own.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO TOOK THE TIME TO SEND ME IINFORMATION - I REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP. :) :)
And a special thank you to Pudgy One whose post set me on the path to a solution. :) :) :)
Like so many things in life I had unkownly created my own problem !
